A much stronger instalment than the first sequel as the film attempts to add more to Zatoichi's backstory and introduces a much stronger adversary as a result. The tenuous connection to the previous film and the possibility of love and redemption results in interesting character moments for the eponymous hero as he is forced to confront his past actions and there is some much needed depth brought to the character. The finale sequence may be be expected by now, but the focus on characters and a stronger story makes for a much more satisfying fight.
