Well, that was boring. And completely forgettable. Seriously, I forgot about sequences while watching them already.
I really disliked "Saludos Amigos," but at least I remembered it.
Segment 1: "Once Upon a Wintertime"
I was hopeful in the beginning, with the soft music and beautiful animation of a fairytale-esque snow landscape. Then the characters where introduced, looking awkward as hell and it all went downhill. The story was just as bland as it can get. I really got nothing. Next! 2/10
Segment 2: "Bumble Boogie"
The music chose is fine here (Rimsky-Koraskov's Flight of the Bumblebee) and the animation is at least creative. Still, it’s just kinda there, without leaving much of an impact. 3.5/10
Segment 3: "The Legend of Johnny Appleseed"
This is actually the only short from "Melody Time" I have watched before. I once took a class at university about American Folktales and we watched this segment when we covered this story. I think for the story it is telling it’s fine. Again, it doesn’t leave much an impression but at least it leaves some of it. 4/10
Segment 4: "Little Toot"
Based on a children’s story about a little tugboat (which looks rather creepy tbh) this one is another segment that kind of exists. It started out rather cutesy and then turned dramatic all of sudden. It’s probably one of the few that will keep at least children invested in the film. 3.5/10
Segment 5: "Trees"
This wins the honorary award of being "Most Fantasia-esque“ and looking actually quite gorgeous. It doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the film, which is probably why it is the most memorable one. 5/10
Segment 6: "Blame It on the Samba"
We‘re back with Donald Duck and his bestie José Carioca who are in the company of the Aracuan Bird who introduces them to Samba. The music is catchy, but the weird inclusion of live action sequences is again very off-putting. 3/10
Segment 7: "Pecos Bill“
Let’s go to Texas, shall we? It’s the story of famous hero Pecos Bill, who was raised by coyotes, became the best cowboy in the world and fell in love with feisty cowgirl Slue Foot Sue. The beginning was fine, atmospheric and rather interesting. Then the live action sequence happened (again) and the story started to drag on and on. To be honest, I just lost my span of attention here. 2.5/10
There you have it. It’s probably my least favorite of the package movies so far. Even topping "Saludos Amigos" and that says a lot.
