Kevin Costner plays Robin Hood in this ill-advised action adventure.
What a mess. Long, convoluted drivel with a terrible lead performance from Costner. It’s probably for the best that he didn’t attempt an accent, but having one of the most God-bless-America super stars in the lead role as an Englishman was a horrific casting blunder.
Alan Rickman is in his element as the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham, the man was born sinister so it comes naturally to him. He’s the tent pole propping up the circus while the clowns play around beneath him.
Morgan Freeman is also in this. He’s the wise black sidekick. One wonders at what point in his career does he realise he’s doomed to play the same role over and over again?
There’s a jokey slapstick tone running throughout which sort-of works and might appeal to kids. However, the film is surprisingly violent so it’s hard to recommend it as one for the children.
