Supernatural: Season 1

1x14 Nightmare

Within 5 minutes of the episode, we have Dean and Sam as priests. The usual impersonations require the brothers to basically be themselves but with authority in ways they don't have as themselves. I always see it as a little too easy how they get away with it but at the same time, I take joy in their skill to get the information they need with such confidence. FBI agents, cops, rangers: these all require Dean and Sam to be their regular cool, confident, brooding, serious selves. Priests however, gives much more opportunity for the humour that's been accumulating over the episodes. Dean seems to be quite the amateur thespian and seems at home playing dress-up allowing him to crack wises and be caricatures which is a delightful show for the audience to watch.

The 'monster' in this episode is an abused boy with telekinetic powers. I liked this storyline as I take an interest in psychology and I feel the themes are representative of the kind of torment and behaviour the abuse results in but in a supernatural setting which ups the dynamics and gives the boy the kind of power you wouldn't usually see.

We get some more information in this episode about the brothers' mother as the abused boy says his dad saw his wife die in the same way. Sam links them both by this and the fact he's beginning to have psychic abilities to predict deaths. What could be their connection? Why both their mothers and why do they both have powers now which have begun at the same time? And why doesn't Dean have any? Or does he?
