I must confess that the turn we get in the final moments was essential for me to give this movie a better evaluation - behavioral differences from that time to nowadays cast aside, of course.

I know I'm no silent era expert, but I'd say nothing much about Swanson here.
I'd prefer to stay focused on the biased morale (infected, better put) of the self righteous reformer, the twisted salvation he perpetuates and the bold criticism within the film being on that time. And not to forget as well some of Walsh's skills directing it.
