I will fully admit I was trepidations when I heard there was going to be an all-out attempt to make a ‘decent’ and exciting sequel to Jurassic Park after the last three from the film were all truly dreadful. Much like the upcoming Bladerunner sequel I don’t think the film was called for and seemed doomed to never live up to expectations. The first and still best Jurassic film, Jurassic Park, whilst still preposterous was perfectly cast, had a driven storyline, where the protagonists seemed in genuine danger and for the most part you were never fully sure what the outcome was going to be. But that is the past, a long time in the past, in fact it is dead and buried and will never be resurrected. This film, if it achieves anything, highlights just how good and ground-breaking Jurassic Park really was.
For all its good intentions, for all the lorry-loads of money it has made, seems to have been written with two things in mind. Entertaining but not confusing those under the age of say…ten, and having lots of exciting action set-pieces and great CGI. So on those fronts it probably succeeds.
Unfortunately it also succeeds in upping the quota of horrible Hollywood clichés and poor character development. For instance, Chris Pratt is a funny, likeable and charismatic presence on TV and now the big screen. Yet in this film all I know about Owen is he was an ex-Marine, I think, is good a wrangling velociraptors and went on a date with Bryce Howard’s character. That’s it. He does come up with the more level headed suggestions and ideas and therefore you would probably want him to die last or something but all I felt was it was a waste of great talent. Still he now has a billionaire-dollar movie on his CV and what with Guardians of Galaxy could he care less about what I think?
Talking about Bryce Howard, oh it’s the senior management, ice-queen, who has no time for family and only sees everything as figures on a Spreadsheet. I’ve never seen that before. If Pratt’s character is one-dimensional, Howard’s has no description. I have never seen her in a good role yet so I don’t really know if she is good actor or not. She does wear far too much make-up though – I mean It really is slathered on.
The two kids, who get into trouble by being utter twits, are possibly the most unlikable children characters in a film for some time and they do have some competition. I was hoping they would get eaten but I knew in my heart they wouldn’t. Talking of which why was the film so determined to kill off their handler, Irish actor Katie McGrath, in such a long drawn out and frankly unpleasant way? What did she do to deserve such attention? Listening to the talking heads on the Blu Ray extras it appears that director and ‘writer’ Trevorrow added this scene because it was the most awesome death scene in a Jurassic Park film. He described it like an eight-year, which is how he said he approached the film. See I told you made and written for small children. Whilst were somewhere around the topic both my wife and I were wondering how many pteranodons, pterosaurs and other flying reptiles the ‘flying creatures dome’ actually held. With the exciting set piece of explosions and broken glass it appeared about ten thousand flew out prompting my wife to remark ‘oh for goodness sake’. I believed Vincent D’Onofrio was a serious actor who took his job seriously. After seeing this film, where he played a baddy who is also less than one-dimensional, I have changed my mind. Also, hoping to get the ‘raptors and use them as weapons for the military as super-weapons. Is this plot device ever going to get old?
One thing I did learn from the film is blue-collar Joe’s are lazy shiftless idiots who tend to get eaten and senior management and scientists are cold and heartless with little thought for the average person – so they probably deserve the shiftless idiots they employee. In all honesty every single storyline and character is lazy, derivative and shows a huge lack of imagination on behalf of the story writers and film makers. Considering how much they get paid for coming up with ideas and how brilliant we are constantly told they are stuff like this is hugely disappointing.
The ending of this film I take as a personal affront to my dignity and intelligence. How anyone involved or not in this film can read the scripted ending, then see the filmed ending and say, ‘That’s great it’s a wrap, fantastic, edge of the seat stuff, audiences will love it’, questions all the beliefs I ever had with actors, directors and writers, a group of people I generally hold to be imaginative, creative and more capable that I could be in three lifetimes. Disappointment just does not adequately describe my feelings.
So apart from being super-clichéd, hugely unoriginally and frankly insulting apparently this film is brilliant because it has dinosaurs chasing people all over the place.
At the end of the day Jurassic World has made billions of dollars and from the general public has received a far few ‘five star’ reviews. So another is on the way. Soon, someone is going to make a film that is just car crashes, explosions and CGIed flashing colours and it will still make millions.
Yes, Jurassic World does have a crashing, exploding helicopter in it and it is not a sign-posted event early on the film at all, honestly.
This is genuinely a hold your head in your hands movie.
Send the aliens from Independence Day: Resurgence to wipe out this particular landmark please – now.
