My theory. SPOILERS. Earl is a fantasist and when he sits in his chair alone it triggers him to begin the fantasy. Ramona and Vic are both parts of his imagination. His fantasy is based on his books, television, loneliness, family issues, inadequacies and sexual desires. Some reality may have seeped into the fantasy - maybe earl burnt down the neighbours home with a plane or maybe the broken car is his old one and represents a former exciting life? This movie is left wide open and that's why I like it. If viewed at surface level I can understand why many would dislike or find the movie confusing. At the end of the movie I believe Vic burns his own home down and goes crazy.
