My favorite film because you can wacht the real life and not a fantasy romance.
Reality versus expectation. Expectations are future resentments. The protagonist carries a lot of resentment. It’s the exploration of this, and his internal fears, that make this movie grand. Summer was not a bitch. He just wasn’t listening.
Oh my god Summer is probably the most self centered idiot I've seen in any movie ever. The amount of mental manipulation and toxicity she gave off was dumb as fuck. I don't care how "realistic" this movie was meant to be, her character was terrible and Tom deserved better.
There's something to be said about a movie that can be funny, relatable and moving, all while being an easy watch. I probably watched it 4+ times. If it was possible I'd rate it 11 for the soundtrack.
Haven't seen this film in years, and forgot what it was about. Now, wiser, I fully understand the depth of the film. The film was good, but I absolutely hated the fact how Summer was misinterpreted as the "bitch" of the plot in the beginning. Towards the end, it was made much clearer that neither Summer, nor Tom, was at fault.
Real love, just coincidences. I should have watched this movie before.
I certainly appreciated this movie a bit more with this watch than I previously did. It’s so relatable in a way that most romantic movies are not. Still not my favorite, but it’s really cute.
Rating: 3.5/5 - 8/10 - Would Recommend
An emotional journey, full of ups and downs, and a great lesson hidden underneath. Incredible direction, great acting and engaging plot made for an enjoyable watch.
Not your typical romance movie. It's a unique twist on one though. It's a very cute emotional heart warming and breaking roller coaster. The premise is basically a tutorial on a piece of the complicated thing we call "love," as it teaches a lesson on the "meant to be" fiasco. The only negative comment I have for this film is that it was a bit short and the flashbacks throughout the "500 days" was a bit all over the place, which is supposed to be the premise of the story, but was still a bit hard/confusing to follow.
How much you'll enjoy this film will depend entirely on who you're watching it with
Don’t watch this if you’re going through a break up, its painful at the end because its just such a realistic ending. Not a hopeful movie at all, but a refreshingly real take on love and relationships and how sometimes something doesn’t have to go wrong, its just not the right person.
Ms. Summer did NOTHING WRONG honey we love you
8/10
Reality is never as good as our expectations.
Yeah yeah, Summer is a bitch but Tom is a controlling asshole who has unrealistic expectations. It's still a good movie that does a lot of interesting things.
I don't like thisss ,bored
I rarely find a movie that I honestly hated, but this was obviously an exception. I really disliked Summer, for one. And I just couldn't follow it because it kept jumping backwards and forwards in time which severely pisses me off. Overall, I'm really disappointed in this. Everyone has been reccomending it to me but I went into it with high expectations. To me, it was a mixture of Eleanor & Park and Paper Towns, neither of which I enjoyed.
My name is Autumn! :)
What a soothing, lovable story with a music that blends right in !
out of all the endings that come to mind, they chose the best one
this movie try to be cool all the time, that was made for hipsters. i didn't like at all.
My favorite romance movie.... that made me think a lot about how we live. It's a very real movie.
It's not good in the current world to categorise men into masculine and women into feminine. There are many variety of people nowadays, and every person has each way of attitude towards his/her life. American films attempt to break many stereotypes and this movie maybe one of them. Some are romantic, but others are not. Some want serious relationships with their boyfriends/girlfriends but others don't. I'm sure the film is a new textbook for those who cannot understand human behaviour and who worry about their romantic relationships.
There are some interesting artistic choices in this film that is worth watching for, but it gets irritating if you watch it more than once.
I don't understand why this movie is so adored as it is. It is beautifully scripted and shot, yes, absolutely. But it doesn't really speak of something deep about love as people make it to be. Tom character and his friends are insufferable incels and Summer is full of contradictions. Their alleged "relationship" is a mess and not in a fun and quirky and lovely way, just a cringe mess. Maybe this movie would work if they were teenagers, yes, maybe... but they are adults for heaven's sake! It was just a pain to watch it.
i will talk mostly about my own story, but only as it relates to the film.
it describes a lot of my own "(lack of) love" story. except i lived it for about 4900 days and today i wait to get to that "magical" 5000, out of the current darkness (that feels like 10k years).
my "summer" also behaved like an avoidant since day 1, and me as the "play it cool" anxious one (i obviously only learned this in retrospect).
but mine never did and probably never will marry another man (although she have a rebound for excruciating 200 and some days now). i "married" her near day 200. and she "divorced" me around 4800.
so i believe my case will become different, as she will be "my autumn", after we both learn what we need to learn about life, while apart for those last 500 to 1000 most painful days of my whole 42y life.
definitely i still haven't had my last goodbye meeting with her. and i will not say if the film actually do that or not, but my ex insist on ignoring me and asking me to let her go, that we tried everything before she decided she couldn't anymore (and i know people think i should "respect" her desire, even though i almost always said that i would, and i mostly did).
the film does, however show a happy ending, in which they both get everything they need/deserve in the end. like nearly all stories ever told. and what makes my case so much more complex other than the 10x more days lived, will forever be that i know/feel that she also feels but don't know the impossible love we have for each other and our relationship (never our "marriage"). my feeling and knowledge, however, only solidified, like in the movie, on those final dark days, starting around 4000.
so, in this sense, i am a living example that this film ain't just fiction.
While going through a break up, this movie acted as the perfect balm to soothe the feelings within. A fantastic watch with very real, genuine characters.
Tom was a weird character as I liked him, but some of the things he said were a bit strange. I also like how the movie deals with their relationship and how it kept switching back to different dates. I also think the ending was good. Realistic, but also shows some hope for Tom. One thing that is interesting to point out is how little Summer was shown doing weird things. Like they showed that little comp of her doing weeiirrddd things. It was just, so off idk. Summer dancing with Tom while being engaged is crazy. So at the end of the day, they were both doing weird shi.
At Time of Review:
Solid 7/10
Story and Characters: 8/10
Presentation: 7/10
Enjoyability: 7/10
Edit: I had to move this to a low 8 just because I underrated it.
Being in love is like wearing rose-tinted glasses. Take it off and look at the evidence.
a poignant, well directed and realistic depiction of how it goes out there. the person and the timing that it comes attached with are everything. backed up with pretty music, the film delivers on the story of a boy who loves likes a girl. even better enjoyed with a glass of rum.
Not your average rom-com. A very unique style of storytelling, and the soundtrack is an amazing addition. A rollercoaster of emotions of happiness, sadness, anger, but ultimately the realization of reality. That last scene put such a big smile on my face, perfectly concluding the struggle of how relationships go in the real world.
Well, the seasons are there to go away.
The whole Summer and Autumn concept is very unique to me. Very casual and simple story.
Fun film.
'(500) Days of Summer' impressed me. It features a fairly unique and a pretty refreshing romcom story, which is told in an interesting way. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Tom) is very good, as is co-star Zooey Deschanel (Summer). The pacing is good, as are the comedic aspects. All in all it's a pleasant watch.
all yalls in the comments calling summer a “manipulative bitch” and whatnot, could i ask that you re-evaluate your words in the case where summer was a man and the unrequited love was on the woman’s side? would you instead be saying things like “maaan, i respect him for knowing what he wants and communicating it to her” or “the way she kept harassing him about what They were? annoying”
friends with benefits and feelings of course will be sensitive and complicated topics but summer was Clear about her intentions from the very beginning. so what she’s self-centred? she’s right to put herself and her interests first. tom was not entitled to her and she didn’t owe him anything, especially considering she was upfront about not wanting anything serious. i felt sympathy for tom, it sucked seeing him not have his feelings returned, but summer shouldn’t be to blame. wouldn’t you be more frustrated if she had tried to mold tom into the shape of her ideals?
in any case! i thought it was a lovely movie. it was really uncomfortable at times with the gravity of reality, but important to see.
I've seen this film too many times, maybe even I'll see it again.
A plot that we must take into account in our life

Aka. 7.8 points
The proverb says "perception is reality," but if that's the case we're all living in a world of our own. By way of a repeatedly time-hopping narrative, this film addresses the competing perspectives present in every long-term relationship, and how something as innocuous as a smile can be interpreted completely differently by the two people sharing it.
With a ton of post-production tricks and editing stunts, it runs the risk of being over-conceptual and spoiled, but by keeping a steady focus on that one central point it all winds up complimenting the message nicely. Zooey Deschanel plays her typical hip, quirky character (if you're not already a fan of her act, she won't convince you otherwise here) and her pairing with Joseph Gordon-Levitt feels fun and natural while it lasts. Both characters are thoroughly rounded, with neither taking all the blame for their relationship's trials and tribulations - a rarity for directorial confessionals - and they're accompanied along the way by a dynamite soundtrack.
Normally not my kind of movie, but this one is amazing.
Best generational romantic comedy since 'When Harry meets Sally'. Flawless screenplay and dialogues, great editing, perfect casting, amazing soundtrack. The only reason you may not like this movie is that you do not like romantic comedies.
Without doubt my favourite romantic comedy which surpsingly doesn't involve any love story.
Well, that's not entirely true, becasue Tom is really in love with Summer, but this love is totally unrequited, but doesn't make it worse. When I first saw it I gladly realized that a movie could broadcast to its audience that romance can't be depicted just as a flawless, always happy state of mind. There are ups and downs as well and there is no such thing as the One.
Furthermore, another notice of mine that Zooey Deschanel can play a bit different character than a quirky, adorable naive girl which she usually is in her other roles.
I spotted this movie on many "best of 09" lists and decided to look it up on rottentomatoes. What is the first thing it says in tag line? "If you liked 'High Fidelity', you'll love this movie. Well as luck would have it I LOVED HF so I decided to give it a look.
I was a little disappointed. As a Rom-Com it was decent (especially by today's standards). The difference between this film and a film like HF is that HF starts with real conversation about movies, music and the appreciation of such art while this film has the love story and then sprinkles in some brief references to music and movies. HF was a film about the growth of a person, while this film was... well, a love story.
Worse, in the last 10 minutes the film goes in a direction that is not at all consistent with the rest of the film. It isn't a plot twist or anything like that - it just doesn't fit.
A modern view of love. Great cast of folks from our favourite TV shows. Slow moving. I give this a 6 (fair) out of 10. [anti-Romantic Fling]
What a lovely and fantastic movie !
For me is a very nice movie
i loved this film the music and summer
with the premise that this is not "a love story" with no typical first romance, boys to girls flirting, driving into the sunset or live happily ever after, this movie try to depict the reality of boy and girl relationship with no usual love story gimmick and cheesy line, the plot is light but enjoyable, good acting, and the director purposefully end the movie with the ending rather ambiguously without clearly define wether its good or bad ending, just the cycle start over again
Real movies are real. The tone for me was the mega positive. After the rain can come sun, stuff like that.
Surprisingly pleasant, very cute and a great soundtrack!
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, why are you so adorable?
This is the best romantic movie I saw in my life ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This movie is worth watching for its soundtrack alone!
I think the jumping in time in the beginning really destroys the movie and makes it hard to follow. The last half hour was quite good. Though I really thought Summer was a bitch through the whole movie.
How is it possible not to love this movie? I just don't know.
Awesome Movie , I like it !
Very good movie. Nicely directed.
Is it a comedy? Sometimes. Is it a romantic movie? Almost. Is is a drama? Kind of. It's one of those movies that are impossible to put in a genre, unless you think 'movie where everything in the main character's life seems to go wrong, but still remains optimistic throughout and ends with a sparkle of hope' is a genre. Every once in a while I like see this kind of movie, so you can feel that no matter how bad things are, it'll turn out okay in the end. (500) Days of Summer is a great example of this genre.
Good movie. Not your typical love story.

"500 Days of Summer" is a romantic-comedy-drama that'll make you feel like a love guru by the time the credits roll. It's a story of Tom Hansen, a hopeless romantic, who falls head over heels in love with his boss's new assistant, Summer. Unfortunately for Tom, Summer isn't interested in anything serious, leaving Tom to navigate the complicated waters of unrequited love.
As someone who's been through the ups and downs of a crazy first love, I found myself relating to Tom's desperate attempts to win over Summer. Watching him struggle to keep up with her emotional aloofness was like reliving the emotional rollercoaster that comes with falling for someone who isn't ready to commit. And don't even get me started on how girls can juggle multiple partners while keeping you emotionally involved – it's a mystery to this day!
But the real beauty of "500 Days of Summer" lies in its ending. Tom finally realizes that there's no such thing as soulmates or miracles. It's a hard truth to swallow, but it's one that ultimately sets him free. He learns that life isn't about waiting for someone to complete you; it's about finding happiness within yourself.
In the end, "500 Days of Summer" is a witty and heartwarming film that'll leave you feeling empowered and ready to take on whatever love throws your way. So, if you're in the mood for a romantic movie that'll make you laugh, cry, and maybe even learn a thing or two about love, then this is the movie for you.
