This movie is dumb as hell. It's obvious from the thumbnail on Shudder and it's obvious 20 minutes in that the killer is a man dressed in women's clothing. Word of warning to any movie, you're never gonna fool anyone trying to tell us a killer is a lady but is actually a dude. Also, in the Psycho-esque exposition end scene, the lead of a film, a fucking male film score composer. surmises this of the killer, "his ego as a child was too fragile which caused his masculinity to regress." Direct quote! So....a fragile ego in a boy makes him want to be a murderous woman? So if a boy is weak that makes him "regress" to wanting to dress as a woman? And it's a bad thing to want to dress in women clothes? What the shit are they trying to say here?! Fuck this movie. I get that it was 1983 and blah blah blah, doesn't mean I have to tolerate it in 2017. Ugh. I won't be watching this again. I'm very tempted to list other movies that pull this bullshit but as angry as I am at having wasted any time watching this or any other movie that paints cross dressing or the feeling of being trapped in the wrong body as the sole reason for murder, I'm not gonna spoil other movies since anyone reading this is assuming the "spoiler" blur is based only on this movie. But hit me up if you want others to avoid.

"What have these balls got to do with it?"
A Blade in the Dark is a very slow, whodunit slasher movie. The acting is pretty bad. The characters are annoying. The dialog is terrible, but, at the same time, some of the most unintentionally funny I have ever heard - more than once I asked myself if this was supposed to be a comedy.
There is a twist ending, which was already spoiled by another reviewer here, but I understand how the coding works, so...
It is painfully obvious what the twist is going to be from the first scene. Maybe it's just because I watched this in 2022, and I'm conditioned to respond to "they wouldn't be able to make this today" movies. Not only was the twist apparent to me from the beginning, but also that the killer was Michele Soavi was very clear. This movie, man, this is what SJWs are whining about with Sleepaway Camp. I could actually understand why people might be offended by this one, fair enough. A little immature, but I get it. Just goes to show SJWs don't watch enough movies. A bit of a rant, I'll move on.
Just in terms of movie making, this is boring, and the kills are minimal. I was more entertained by the bad writing. This really is one of those have some friends over, eat some snacks, and share a laugh, kind of horror movies. Seriously, I laughed so hard during one part, I had to hit pause, because I couldn't focus on what else was going on.
Unless you're a diehard connoisseur of bad slasher movies, don't bother with this one. It has some good music, but that's it.
