A Christmas Story 1983

I can't think of another movie that more accurately captures the magical feelings of the Christmas season. fun to have on around Christmas and remember the feelings.

I'm not really a fan of much Christmas films, my lest watch in movie genres, but this is something else, something that brings out the Christmas joy, like opening your gifts on a Christmas day, and getting what you wanted or stuffing your face with the turkey like i do.. also the film has a great sense of humour, not like the shit jokes you get out of crackers, but more like sitting around the table with your family and friends having a good laugh. Films with a narrator always come of best for me.... one the best Christmas movies out there...

Hands down the best Christmas movie ever made. I rarely re-watch a movie but I’ve probably seen this movie thirty times. During a particularly troubled holiday season this movie kept me company all day long. It will always have a special place in my heart. I've read through most of the reviews on this site and many are down on the film. I think people are trying to analyze this movie waaaaaay too much. Think about it - how many good movies are in this space? By definition the genre has to be a little schlocky. There are the films that are considered classics but either nobody really watches (It's a Wonderful Life) or not nearly as funny as people think they are (Christmas Vacation). There are a handful of old movies that are fantastic (Shop Around the Corner, Christmas in Connecticut) but those don't get much mention. This film is a little absurd but that's par for the course.

Film 67 (Goal: 300) of 2024

There's something homely about A Christmas Story, even though this film was made in the early 80s, about a Country on the other side of the world, set in the 1940s. Despite all those differences, there's something about A Christmas Story, that even at 36 years old and watching it for the first time, it just feels right. I have fond memories of my Christmas days as a young kid, and how much effort my parents went to, to make it special. Add in the weaving canvas of the weeks leading up to Christmas - the interactions with friends, school coming to an end, and other things (that may be lost on my foreign readers). But those things I experienced, whilst different, I saw relayed in the journey of A Christmas Story. Sure, not everything works. I guess the stuff with the lamp leg is to show the average, every day family but honestly, the Dad comes off a little creepy. But that aside, A Christmas Story as a complete piece works and I see why it's beloved.

Every year I notice new things. This year…
- During the first breakfast scene Randy’s glass is spilled on his toast in a quick cutaway but in the next shot it’s back upright. However the milk is still spilled on his toast.
- When the dad plugs in the leg lamp for the first time and we see all the plugs in the wall I gotta wonder - what do all those plugs belong to? They have a radio and only a few lamps but there’s like 6 or 7 things plugged into that one outlet.
- Why does the mom have a fly swatter in her hand already when she tells Ralphie to go upstairs and try on Aunt Clara’s gift?

Another Christmas classic that I have seen too many times to count! Rumor is some people really hate this movie. Well- those people don’t have taste. This is a rock solid movie that has a stylistic charm to it that isn’t really replicated. The sequel from this year was also surprisingly good and I recommend that as well!

Rating: 4.5/5 - 9/10 - Highly Recommend

I didn't grow up watching this on TV. I have zero nostalgic feelings for it. I thought it was a lovely, funny movie. The narration is just great.

I am failing to think of a single movie I find to be more heinously overrated than A Christmas Story. I suspect that the central pillar which supports its sacred position within the hearts of modern individuals is merely that of nostalgia. This movie surely does not stand up on its own. Remove all memory of this abomination from the zeitgeist, show it to present day individuals for a renewed “first time,” and I’d bet that this movie would simply implode upon itself.

One of the most beloved Christmas films ever made, A Christmas Story is a fun, nostalgic look at the innocence of childhood. The story follows a 9-year-old boy named Ralphie who wants a Red Rider BB Gun for Christmas, and attempts to do everything that he can think of to get it; from bribing his teacher to seeing Santa Claus (at the department store). The film is especially well-written, particularly in how it presents the childhood point-of-view. Additionally, the sets and costumes are quite authentic, making the audience feel as if they’ve been transported to the 1940s. There’s also a sincerity and earnestness to the performances and the humor that gives the film a certain charm. A Christmas Story is a heartwarming film that captures the wonder and magic of Christmas.

A good family movie but not one my best Christmas movies.

The movie lacked an interesting plot and it just flowed from start to end without any form of climax.

The movie does bring back fond memories of events which you might have experienced yourself as a child.
