A Good Woman 2004

Middle of the road that had much more potential.

I'm unfamiliar with the Oscar Wilde play but the explanation or reasoning for Stella extorting the husband of her estranged daughter is very poorly done here.

As that is the main plot device it's a massive reason it falls down for me, a few tweaks in the script and it could have been more than reasonable. It at the very least it manages to be engaging throughout its short runtime.

A stellar cast but a script out of its time. It was a waste of Scarlett Johannson, playing a starry eyed aunjanue, but Tom Wilkinson brought a reality to an otherwise flat attempt at parlour comedy. For most of the movie, my teeth were on edge, but, I have to say, I loved the ending. I give this movie a 6 (ended well) out of 10. [an adaption of an Oscar Wilde comedy]

Based on a play by Oscar Wilde, A Good Woman is a satirical comedy set in the 1930s. The story follows a seductress, who preys upon rich men, as she heads for the coast of Italy in search of new prospects. The film stars Helen Hunt, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Wilkinson, who all give strong performances. The costumes and set designs are also quite impressive, and have an authentic feel to them. However, the writing is dialog heavy and it interferes with the storytelling. Yet while A Good Woman has some problems, it’s entertaining and has a smart sense of humor.
