A Prairie Home Companion 2006

A Prairie Home Companion is a nostalgic love letter to old time variety radio. Directed by Robert Altman and written by Garrison Keillor, the film follows the last performance of the radio variety show A Prairie Home Companion as the staff struggles to deal with the show’s closing. The all-star cast features Kevin Kline, Tommy Lee Jones, Virginia Madsen, Woody Harrelson, and Lindsey Lohan; who all deliver wonderful performances that are engrossing and really bring the audience into the lives of these characters, as dose the story. Additionally, the music is exceptionally well-done; setting the perfect atmosphere for the variety show and embodying the feel of old time radio. Majestic and heartfelt, A Prairie Home Companion is a beautiful film that homages a lost part of Americana.

I'm not sure where to begin. This movie was so disappointing. From the trailers and the initial buzz I settled in for what I thought would be a great 2 hours. But it went so wrong. The song segments ARE the movie. There really is no story. The story is used to bridge the songs. That would be great if this was Grease or Chicago or some other movie where the songs are memorable. The Virginia Madsen role has me dumbfounded. I'll just leave it at that. An Angel. At the theatre. Riiiight.
