A Son 2020

[Atlántida FF] A complex and tough film that uses the tragedy experienced by parents to write about the difference in treatment between male and female infidelity in Arab societies. There is a certain cinematic look that reminds us of Asghar Farhadi's films, but the narrative wants to introduce other elements, such as organ trafficking, which diverts attention from an theme that is interesting enough.

Maghreb cinema is stepping out of the desert wind and taking a place at the forefront of regions making notable films. And Bik Eneich: Un Fils / A Son is a big step in that direction.

The story of a young boy who is hit by a stray bullet and requires an organ donor starts off as a stirring drama, only to evolve into a fascinating study of family, love, and politics that mesh together like different incense fragrances harmonizing into a single aromatic strand.

Like the desert itself, A Son has depth and many layers, though goes on a little too long at the end. #recommend
