I finally watched A Star Is Born, and boy... was I just blown away. This film is a literal whirlwind of emotions culminating in one truly tragic ending. I was hyped for this movie for months, and it definitely lived up to expectations (even exceeded them). I was totally floored by the performances of Lady Gaga and especially Bradley Cooper who completely disappears into his role of Jackson Maine (in a good way). The soundtrack to this movie is just spectacular with some of the best ballads that I've heard in a long time in both "Shallow" and "I'll Never Love Again". That first scene where Gaga and Cooper perform together on stage is just a revelation.

While this is a story that has been done many times (literally, this is the 4th remake), Cooper's version is just masterfully built and developed amazingly well even though it does run a bit long. It was over 2 hours long (135 mins), but at times I actually wish that it could have been longer due to how much I connected with the characters. It's a true "modern take" on a classic tale. And definitely prepare to cry as well. My god, the last 20 minutes of the movie were just... beyond brutal. If you've ever dealt with or really known/loved someone with addiction and/or depression problems, this movie hits so close to home that it is scary.
A Star Is Born is an instant classic and a definite Oscar favorite in multiple categories. If you told me that in 2018 the guy who played Sack in Wedding Crashers 13 years ago would direct and star in an emotional and moving film like this, I'd call you crazy. I'm definitely going to watch this again, but those last 15 minutes of the movie truly were gut-wrenching. Maybe I'll just stick with listening to the soundtrack over and over again... :P
Most remakes don’t live up to the original. But certainly this one surpasses all the previous ones. Proof of it, it’s the fact that I have never been able to watch a musical without walking out until l watched this movie.
The movie shows how much Lady Gaga has grown as an artist, probably becoming the best and most versatile voices of the XXI yet. She is able to reinvent herself every other day in a way very few artists throughout history have been to do it.
I was not a “fan” of her. She made me curious when I heard her duets with Tony Bennett, but now after seeing her ”natural looks” and the way she is able to sing and act, she has finally won me over.
I would advise not passing on either the movie or original sound track.
I don't get all the hype for this movie. Sure, the music is great, the acting and the chemistry between the leads are good, but the story itself is nothing special. It draged for a while and I was a bit bored. The most exciting moment for me was Brandi Carlile's cameo.
A Star Is Born is like a rock concert by a group a friend of yours loves. The energy emanating from the music and everything involving the music is gold, but the chatter between the songs goes on too long, is dull and drags down the mood with its predictability.
The first act is definitely the strongest and, not surprisingly, is where we find the most music. There are even moments reminiscent of the extraordinary anti-musical musical Once. After that, though, the film becomes too bogged down in a story that holds as many surprises as a Back Street Boys reunion tour.
Lady Gaga acts as well as Bradley Cooper sings, which is to say well enough to pull off this film but the Oscar buzz is from listening to the soundtrack too loud because that's where the real talent is.
Had this film cut about 20 minutes, I could've saved time clamouring for an encore I didn't really want to stay for. As it is, I caught myself checking my watch and wondering how bad the traffic would be on the way home.
Spoilers ahead!! You've been warned!
Nope. Nope. Nope. Just no all around.
How did so many people like this movie? It's terribly formulaic and unoriginal.
And God, I just can't with the instalove. Like 16 year old me was all about that, but c'mon. He was an overbearing, pushy drunk. I don't believe she would've ever given him the time of day if he hadn't been famous.
Also, if not for the fame and musical talent, why would you ever insert yourself into the life of a broken, deeply messed up person struggling with serious addiction issues? All of his bad qualities were plain visible for everyone to see from the get go. What would even make you want to spend more time with someone like that so you could get to know them?
Hated the plot (I was actually rooting for him to die at the end so the movie would be infinitesimally more interesting, even though SUPER PREDICTABLE still), I would not for the life of me be able to tell anyone how much time went by from when they met to the end. The timing was just plain wrong and confusing.
The chemistry was there, the acting was ok, although I was already sick and tired of the drunk/drugged act by the middle of the movie. And the singing and songs were good, too.
But the story? Beyond lame. Just plain bad
Just think about the underlying messages of this movie: If you bug and pressure a woman enough a no will turn into a yes. Whether it's a drink, skipping work to fly to a show, sing on stage while not really prepared, change her personal appearance and creative style... All to appease the men around her.
And also, no matter how much he loves you, he won't be able to deal with your success and will use it as another excuse to keep spiriling down.
(Ally didn't even have a last name for crying out loud! That's how unimportant she was compared to Jack's character)
That's messed up. Think about it.
[6.1/10] Is fair to criticize a remake for being rote? It seems a little churlish to complain that a retelling of a well-known story comes off as derivative and unoriginal. Obviously 2018’s version of A Star Is Born is pulling from its predecessors and plenty of other the other cultural flotsam in how we do movies about musicians in this day and age. But suffice it to say, even if you haven’t seen one of A Star Is Born’s many predecessors before, you’ve probably seen this same basic story ten times over.
The film tells the tale of Jackson Maine, a weathered rock-and-roll-with-soul type who’s half Bruce Springsteen and half Eddie Vedder, and Ally the drag show performer he plucks from obscurity and brings into his romantic life and the world of professional music. As you may have guessed from the title, Ally shines and her career takes off at the same time her relationship with Jackson is blooming, but shockingly, jealousy and alcoholism not only cause friction between the two leads but start to drag Jackson down at the same time Ally finds herself on the crest of stardom.
The film is pretty hackneyed from the jump. It hits every cliché from musical biopics and other thinly-veiled showbiz substitutes early and often. Jackson is a mess who’s lost the stuff, but the spark of this random relationship helps to both save him and give his music a shot in the arm. Ally is timid and full of self-doubt, but with encouragement and support and assurances that she’s pretty, finds that confidence and it-factor that lets her talent blossom. And along the way, there’s evil managers, ponderous exchanges about truth in art, and tired tropes about the pitfalls of fame and fortune. There is nothing new in the substance here, just reheated leftovers from the scores of films about performers that came before.
But there’s something to the style of the film which helps distinguish it a little, which is the bare minimum you can ask for from remake number four. There’s a committed attempt at naturalism in places. The film can’t always sustain the energy, but there’s a mumblecore-mixed-with-cheese quality to most of the dialogue that at least gives the viewer the sense that hey, maybe people in the music biz are just that rambling and “I’m 14 and this is deep” when they talk. The movie doesn't always pull it off (and the script does it no favors), but I at least admire the attempt to make the character sound like real people even if they can’t seem like real people.
The film’s also well made from visual standpoint, with alternating scenes of people lit low in the dark of night owl bars and evening concerts, and characters backed with brightness in more natural, sun-kissed settings that represent the pull of the superficial world Ally and Jack occupy and the realer places away from it.
Still, the core of the movie is dull and unconvincing. I’ll concede that watching this film on the same day a number of women have spoken out about Ryan Adams taking an interest in their careers when they were young and tying his support to obsessive and exploitive relationships dampened my enthusiasm for the already suspect romance at the center of the film, which takes the same shape.
But separate from that metatextual issue, it’s hard to be invested in the core relationship that the rest of the film is built on. The premise of the film seems to be that Jackson recognizes some spark in Ally, and that Ally recognizes some wounded humanity in Jackson, and that this mutual recognition allows the pair to connect as artists and human beings. But both qualities are unconvincing for most of the film’s runtime, and however cute or relatable the film strains to make their interactions, they never rise above seeming like a couple who love each other instantly and enduringly mostly because the film needs them too.
It’s particularly difficult because so much of A Star Is Born is built on the idea that Jackson has this truth-telling insight, that Ally has this irrepressible stardom within her, and that it comes through in the music they make and the songs they create. The big problem is that those songs -- the showpieces of the film -- are trite nonsense. Lady Gaga obviously has a lovely voice, and Bradley Cooper slurs his way through a back-of-the-throat drawl well enough, but these sterling reflections of their pure and wounded souls come off like shallow navel-gazing without a whit of insight or inspiration. When the things that are supposed to not only signify your characters’ transcendent abilities, but what’s within their hearts, fall flat, there’s not a lot you can do to make up for it, especially when your movie is a kinda sorta musical.
Oddly enough, for all the star wattage in the film, the strongest interludes of the movie come from the supporting characters. Lady Gaga acquits herself well in a role that seems tailor made for her, and Bradley Cooper shows off his chops when he loosens up on the “Tim Riggins with a guitar” vibe. But Sam Elliott quietly steals the show with minimal screen time as Jackson’s brother with whom he has a complicated relationship, and Dave Chapelle of all people (who knows a thing or two about having a complicated relationship with fame and show business) gives a hell of a dramatic performance as Jackson’s advice-giving old friend.
It’s no coincidence that these brighter moments tend to come when the movie slows down. One of the biggest issues with A Star Is Born is that it barrels through plot points, with Ally’s rise, Jackson’s fall, and the pair’s meeting and romance all happening so quickly that none of it has any time to breathe or land. Charitably, you could attribute that to trying to create an atmosphere of the whirlwind way success comes and goes, but the effect is that it’s hard to latch onto anything that happens in the film. Only in the film’s last twenty minutes or so, when it dispenses with the up-and-down narrative and faux-profound exposition and focuses on the quieter effects on its characters, does the film start to feel like something more than yet another deep-as-a-thimble quasi-musical biopic.
By then, however, it’s too little too late. At the end of the day, A Star Is Born is fine. It’s well-made, often well-acted, and competently hits the expected beats with a few new wrinkles here and there. The problem is that, like its characters, the film seems to be convinced that it is burdened by the heavens with the need to Say Something™, with all the self-seriousness that comes with that would-be grand purpose. And yet, like the supposedly profound and soul-imbued songs its main characters sing, the end result comes off like high-grade, unaffecting hackwork. Fair or not, you’ve heard this tune before, and this rendition plays like it thinks it’s at the Grammys when it’s really just doing karaoke.
Incredible movie with incredible performances, the characters are believable and relatable, grounded. The soundtrack is, for the most part, deeply personal and relevant, which almost makes it crushing.
there are no tears left inside of me. lady gaga was perfect.
An incredible movie with amazing performances by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
The plot will absorb you so much that you won't even notice the movie ending and the strong emotions emerging might even cause shedding of a tear or two.
I am not a fun of Lady Gaga's music, but I respect her very much for being a self-made hard working professional. I just don't get it why she participated in a Cinderella vanilla whipped cream story about a series of miracles happening to girl just because she was good. This is exactly that kind of story which sets unrealistic expectations for life in millennials' heads. Apart from solid production, this film is not much different from some Danielle Steel TV adaptation.
What a wonderful, beautiful and sad story. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper were simply outstanding in this film and i can't wait to see it again! Bradley Cooper came out the gate swinging with his directorial debut and can't wait to see what he does next. The music was amazing, almost every track pretty much worked for me. One of the best of 2018 so far, easily.
- 9.2/10
"Maybe it's time to let the old ways die."
'A Star Is Born' is a depressing look on love, drugs and rock n roll, but will occasionally stumble into some cliche moments with the main message shooting itself in the foot. I mean, the whole "if you’re talented, but don’t have anything to say", which is just this movie. Nothing new is said at all. However, as soon as the credits rolled, I was left speechless. A mishmash of emotions that left me drained.
Bradley Cooper is absolutely excellent as the talented, yet deeply troubled Jack. Every time Cooper is on screen, I really bought him as the alcoholic rock star. The way he carries himself throughout with his mumble speech was totally believable. I don't know what’s more impressive: This is Cooper’s directorial debut or his singing voice...maybe both.
Lady Gaga is also really great and finally shows off her acting chops, something that her previous roles failed to do. While some of her line delivery was a bit unnatural, but I thought she’s terrific during the dramatic aspects. And of course her singing voice is dynamic.
Sam Elliott, on the other hand, absolutely broke me and his screen time is very slim. Without spoiling anything, there’s a scene involving him reversing his car and we get a close up shot on Elliott’s face, with no dialogue and music, just his reaction. It’s some of the best acting.
The sound design is incredibly detailed, especially during the concert scenes. The songs itself are really good and you can understand why within this story it made them stars. Although the editing is a bit clunky at times and the directing isn't anything too special. The movie can get a little bit predictable, because it almost follows the Oscar bait formula, but didn’t distract my emotional investment .
Overall rating: Out of all the movies nominated this year at the Oscars that I thought are either bland or straight up bad - this is probably my third favorite with the others being 'The Favorite' and 'Roma'.
me to Bradley Cooper "I just wanted to take another look at you."
I love Gaga and I was happy to see her out of costume and au natural ... it’s the only way that the masses will truly appreciate how talented she really is. The acting was also quite good. The movie was just too long. I felt like I was being hit over the head with what a douche this guy was .. it’s fine I got it in the first 10 minutes. Also I wish that they hadn’t turned her into a dance music star. They started her as a chanteuse and he then called her a ‘songwriter’ but she became a bubblegum pop idol, I fear trying to appease the teen crowd. Too bad. Movie was fair at best.
Oh, this was a good one! One of those stories that pull you in right from the start. Good actors, good singing. Sad ending.
Holy overrated movie. This was some self indulgent writing. Bradley Cooper does his best impression of Matthew McConaughey doing a Sam Elliot impersonation. Lady Gaga plays a toned down version of herself. They succeed in doing their jobs, nothing amazing about the performances. Above average romance at best.

First off, let's start by recognizing that this is the 4th remake of this movie. If you haven't seen any of the previous versions then you have tge advantage of thinking this movie is unique ir original rather than a repeat. Having said that, what is different about this one is the music and context. The story may be the same, but it's tokd from a more modern context. The beginning was really enjoyable, filled with great music, but then that gets lost in the drama. And that's obviously part of the process, they even mention the loss of that original music in all the drama, but it still makes the rest of the movie less enjoyable. It becomes about drama rather than music and it loses its excitement. It's raw and emotional, that's true, but I just didn't love it like I was expecting to.
It's a little bloated and drags out just a bit, but it's an impressive debut all around. Great performances, telling a moving love story, with some good tunes.
One of the best movies I've ever seen, Lady Gaga totally fits the role she's playing(it's equivalent to how fitting Eminem was in 8 mile), Bradley Cooper does a good job as well. Every song was banger (reminds me of the greatest showman). The only little nitpicky things that was 'bad but ignorable' about this show was that the pacing was little bit too fast in some parts and there's just too much sex scenes tbh
Too long, very predictable ending, no climax and not very emotional in my opinion, even though others might disagree on that.
Absolutely incredible that this movie is Bradley Cooper's directorial debut. So, so well-crafted... Just beautiful.
I just don’t get the hype. Was hoping this would blow me away, it didn’t. Maybe it’s unfair to review this movie because I fell asleep halfway through. I hated that the camera was always in someone's face.
A Star Is Born is so melodramatic (it felt like Bradley Cooper was beating me with a stick trying to make me cry) and cliché, the type of movie that tries so hard to be deep but simply does not achieve it. lt felt like there was no script written for this. I didn't think an agonizing American Dreamy love story just by itself could count for an actual plot.
Bradley Cooper really mumbled in a yeehaw accent through a mediocre at best performance, Lady Gaga acted like a singer, being an actress. 90% of her lines are just _"What? What do you mean? What? What’s going on?”. Her character has no real identity. And she randomly broke out into song more times than I can count. Their relationship was cringey as well. I don't find Gaga and Cooper's chemistry believable.
Besides a shallow, unimaginative and almost cartoonish critique of modern commercial music today, the movie has nothing to offer.
Really enjoyed this movie great acting, story and music.
Having never made it to the end of the tedious and self-indulgent 1976 Barbara Streisand version of the story, I didn't know how I would fare with this one. Well... I made it! I can't rave about the film like others have - it is too long and not always interesting (unless you're a Lady Gaga fan) - but it is well made, the conclusion is affecting, and Gaga and Cooper do good work here.
Gaga e Cooper atuaram e cantaram muito. Muito boa a trilha sonora.
great movie! well written, good acting and all around performance. fantastic sound track and a beautiful love story. really enjoyed it.
Having loved this in cinemas and having recently re-visited it on VOD, this seems as good a time as any to note down some thoughts.
I didn't like the much as much on re-watch as I did in the theatre, but I've left my initial score stand.
The things that worked for me the first time around still work now: the chemistry between the main characters (as well as generally interesting side characters), a fantastic performance by Lady Gaga (both musically and from an acting perspective), and some genuinely goosebumps generating moments (Ally getting pulled onto the stage for the first time, Ally's father comforting her, the final shot of the movie).
However, as many have noted, the movie's deficiencies became much clearer to me upon second viewing. For a movie called A Star Is Born, the second and third acts spend an inexplicably and indefensible amount of time dealing with the fading star that's Bradley Cooper's character.
It's unfortunate that this lack of focus robs us of the plot development we actually care about: Ally's professional success and the development she goes through - with and without a man by her side.
One last thing: the very final section is so close to perfection. Lady Gaga's singing, while acting, is unreal. The moment is so powerful... and then Bradley Cooper ruins it by filling it with flashbacks of stuff that happened during the last two hours of the movie. Don't worry dude - we haven't forgotten. I wish he'd shown a little bit more restraint and more confidence in Lady Gaga's performance, and the audience's ability to connect the dots.
All of those complaints aside, I still love this movie. It's emotional film-making, and it works.
You can tell why this movie is getting a lot of awards buzz, it's a really powerful movie. All acting is great espically by Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, and Sam Elliot. Following this story is very easy because you fall in love with these characters and there issues feel like your issues. A really touching movie that's also very sad and real and that last song man was that powerful great way to end the movie, a great directorial debut for Bradley Cooper.
Nothing new, such predictable. Another film about the bad world of the entertainment industry.
Greatest movie. No more words....
I think Bradley made a pretty solid remake , glamorous yet grounded and realistic
**** Lady Gaga is A FORCE OF NATURE ****
so beautiful, original, powerful, heavy movie. the chemistry between Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper is undeniable, true love comes in all form and music makes it even more real & special. that ending i kinda expected it "i am all into suicides & depressing things" but this one it kinda took me off!! really off!! this is my OSCAR go to movie 100%!! MUST-WATCH!!
I don't know what's going on with Sam Elliott's emotional scenes but damn it, he can really pull them off if given the chance! During the first part of the movie I kept imagining myself as a fan of Jackson, going to one of his concerts and then finding out he keeps pushing some girl called Ally on stage (Yoko Ono vibe). She was good, but I don't expect fans to want her specifically. Other than that a pretty good movie.
Lady Gaga may not won the Oscar, but she won my heart!!
Bradley Cooper can sing and Dice can act?? Did hell freeze over?.. am I being punk'd??
The chemistry between Gaga and Cooper is amazing, the close-ups of both are gold and only with their eyes they create magical scenes. The evolution of the characters are brutal. The songs are perfect and make you feel everything, tears included. Shallow is the most beautiful song that Gaga has ever done, when it reached the chorus my body stopped, the same as with I'll never love again, brutal again.
I got goosebumps every time I saw this trailer as Ally came out to sing Shallow and I got goosebumps in the movie too. This is just incredible. I'm blown away by Bradley Cooper. Not only does he do an amazing job directing, he gives an oscar worthy performance and he is a pretty good singer too. Lady Gaga was phenomenal and together they have fantastic chemistry. Shout out to Sam Elliott and Dave Chappelle who both are really good too. I had a wide range of emotions while watching this. The first act with all the music is the best and just a delight to watch. The third act was heartbreaking. My only complaint is that it is a little too long. Still this is a very special movie. Now I'm going to go listen to Shallow again.
This movie was absolutely amazing. Lady Gaga fucking CRUSHES. Truly spectacular. I was prepared to hate this because the ads were so EVERYWHERE. I saw two movies at an AMC that played TWO DIFFERENT TRAILERS to this before one movie. But lemme tell ya...believe that hype, baby. I already know the backlash is gonna be swift on this and I'm sure the hot take think pieces are going to start rolling in over the weekend but I DON'T CARE. I loved this movie. Seeing again Friday, buying the soundtrack the SECOND it drops. Love love love love love.
To tell the truth i was so excited for what i saw i expected much more..Maybe i wasn't in the right mood but in some points i got bored..For sure worths a watch,i enjoy some good songs and Gaga's perfomance was something else..I would rate it as a 7.1/10..
Wow, I don’t think I have cried harder during a movie than this. I managed to keep it together till the end, but when she sang that song and they did the flashbacks, I lost it. And of course, the movie ends abruptly after that and the lights come on in the theater so you’re sitting there, a damn mess and have to face the outside world. It was so amazing, and the music is just perfect and heartbreaking. UGH. I get sad thinking about it. There’s so much chemistry between Gaga and him too. Chefs kiss.
It's fundamentally difficult to try to tell a story that's been told several times before. We all know roughly how the story is going to play out so the telling of the story already has a strike against it before it even starts. For me this film was broken up into two completely viewing experiences.
The first half of the film is absolutely electric. Bradley Cooper is endearing and charming and Lady Gaga is .... spunky?... and in her own way very endearing. The first few scenes between them are magical and their chemistry is undeniable. The two leads are perfectly cast and their performances are phenomenal.
The second half? That's where the film needed to make its bones and I think it fell short. It has to be a lot harder to tell a story of a relationship falling apart than it is to show it coming together (although some films like Blue Valentine pull it off well). The movie started to ramble a bit and may have even gone on a bit too long. I don't think that it portrayed the heartache that it needed to. My 8.75 rating is a reflection of how good the first half is.

It always gave me the impression that this movie would be about becoming a star where "Shallow" would be the culmination of all of it. But then the 2nd act hits and I kind of got lost. Gaga's character got so different that it annoyed the f*ck out of me. Even the way she singed was different. But that was the point I think. Also, not a big fan of the fanservice in the movie. But the 3rd act was pretty good. I was afraid that the conclusion would be sh*t but "I'll Never Love Again" was definitely the highlight of the movie.
I'm not a fan o musicals or even i don't follow lady gaga but i must admit that this was a very good movie. I was blown away by the performance of Gaga and Bradley was superb. The chemistry between them was beyond great and the story with the ending was more than enough. Didn't like the songs so much but fantastic attempt by Bradley in directing the movie.
Amei. E fiquei refleti do sobre a história horas depois de ter assistido.
This movie was great. Bradley and Gaga are killer in this one. I will definitely be watching this again.
The whole movie long I already had a feeling we wouldn’t get a happy ending, but when the ball dropped I still didn’t feel nowhere near prepared for it… They just loved each other so much and my heart is absolutely broken for these two beautiful souls.
Anyway, this movie was obviously utterly amazing in general, but I need to give major props to Bradley Cooper specifically. His acting absolutely blew me away with how authentic and heartfelt it was. His portrayal really made the movie into the fantastic love story and utter tragedy it ended up being.
With an alcoholic character like Jackson it would be so easy for the watcher to have moments of irritation or even disgust towards him, but the way Bradley played him was so pure it made me feel nothing but sympathy and love for Jack from beginning to end.
God this was so effin dull.
A solid love story and tragedy. Gaga is a surprisingly forceful actress!
A beautiful story of what a star can go through his/her career,
To be honest I wasn't expecting the ending to be like that it is so overwhelming for me.
I watched this movie with my mum in a small outdoor cinema and when we left she said 'It was boring and I almost walked out but the staff was so nice I couldn't do it' and I wholeheartedly agreed. It was indeed boring but the music was awesome! thats about the only positive thing about it.
Popstar Jack whose career is past its peak, who faces health issues and is an alcoholic, meets young singer Ally in a bar. He's enthralled by her voice and invites her to his next concert. They fall in love, Ally's career starts off, while Jack's life goes downhill.
Honestly, this felt more like a Lady Gaga 2 hour music video than a movie. There were way too many songs in full length... and in between those songs there was way too much of disappointed, driven Ally confronting a drunk Jack. The time used on the music could have been better used to actually develop some kind of plot, aside from brothers, greedy managers who're jumping the ship... and alcohol. The ending just... sort of happened, but again, would have been much stronger if I actually had cared about any of those characters.
So, overall: works as a music video... but makes for a rather average movie. Not sure where all the hype this gets comes from.
A Star is Born didn't shine very bright. The story was formulaic and predictable. What did shine was my watch as I kept checking the time.
The beginning of the story is many a girl’s dream. Love that we start this in a drag club, and love that we get a man who loves a nose.
“You almost single handedly derailed her entire career…”
Wow. What a materialistic way of thinking. Who gives a shit about careers when you love someone this much.
And the whole idea to kill yourself to set a loved one free… no. That’s not what happens. Not if they truly love you. You’re just killing them right with you. Or really, it’ll be by pure chance if they find a spark in their own death and when. But it’s not worth it. But also… one would have to experience it to know. Wouldn’t recommend.
A Star Is Born, directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Cooper and Lady Gaga, is a fresh take on the classic tale of love and contrasting fortunes. The performances by Cooper and Gaga are career-best and their chemistry is electric. The soundtrack, co-written by Cooper and Lukas Nelson, blends seamlessly with the narrative. Although the SNL and Grammy scenes feel out of place, the concert scenes are captured brilliantly. The movie is a show-stopping achievement, fueled by scintillating performances and a stellar soundtrack that will capture the hearts of audiences.
A strong directorial debut
A Star is Born was met with a rapturous reception at its Venice Film Festival première earlier this year, and has since gone on to receive near universal critical acclaim (90% on Rotten Tomatoes at time of writing), with much speculation as to its staying-power come award season. And whilst I liked it, and found a great deal to admire, I didn't love it. At least I didn't love all of it.

A bit disappointed by the movie, but perhaps because it was so overrated. The overall story is very flat and sometimes it feels like a too long music clip. The beginning was very strong, but in the middle almost nothing happens and it got boring. You only see them touring and singing. No story, no acting and everything was very superficial. Didn't expected the ending, which was very sad, but as an final impression I would say, that it also wasn't so believable at all.
I love Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga is such a great singer but this movie really bored me.
I only gave 5 stars for the songs but I almost fell asleep watching it.
The ending to this movie had me in floods of tears, the song's were pure gold. Apart from Lady Gaga the acting was just ok. But genuinely Gaga showed how amazing she truly is in this movie.
I felt like it was inspired from "Aashiqui 2".
Poor to mediocre acting when compared with the 1954 version. What is enjoyable is that this modern version has all that live concert energy that the old lack. Good sunday movie.
8 - Great
Okay wow such great chemestry between Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Most of the songs were great and the story was a okay.
Es un dramón en toda regla... Esperaba algo más moñas y no este despliegue de miserias y dramatismo. La peli no está mal, pero para mí no es ese peliculón que algunos decían.
Loved the movie. Great performances by Gaga,Sam Elliott and Bradley Cooper.
Ally's rise, however, is more interesting than her success. As the long follows the lines laid down by its predecessors, a Star Birth is lost in intensity. There is a lot of effort to distance Gaga from her character, but when the narrative turns her into a pop diva, the fictional version becomes a parody of the singer. If in the first and second acts the star of Ally shines, in the third it becomes questionable. Her choices do not seem to be her own, even when she says they are. On the other side, Jackson's decadence makes her even more oblivious to what happens around her.
The new Star Birth could have been upgraded beyond the inclusion of cell phones and social networks, making the title Star less reactive. Still, Cooper's ability to create on-screen affective bonds with his characters and music makes the film more than a remake. What you have to say is worth hearing.
y'know how Tarantino usually manages to put a foot scene in every movie he makes because of his foot fetish? I think Cooper might have a nose fetish.
finally i can say Gaga can acting not supper wow but she it try and one day she will go .. in ginerall nice film but not wow ..
Once its clear he’s an inept the drunk and shes out of the strip club performing electro pop it got tiring. So what, Gaga can act, Madonna did too - the problem is not the story because its simple enough (its been done three times already) nor is it the acting, Cooper makes a fine drunk rockstar. The polish on it makes it phony and boring. It needed to be more raw, more indie and less wannabe real.
FILME MARAVILHOSO QUE DEIXA LEVE NOSSOS CORAÇÕES DEPOIS QUE TERMINA.O AMOR É O MAIOR ALIMENTO PARA NOSSA ALMA .
NÃO TENHO VERGONHA DE DIZER QUE CHOREI NO FINAL COMO QQ SER HUMANO SENCIVEL .
Stop reading my comment coz you are wasting time. Get you tissues ready for this awesome movie! Lady Gaga and Bradley Coppers arts in acting and music and love chemistry is simply great! I'm WOW.
This movie was great. I knew Gaga could pull it off, but the performances were powerful. The chemistry between her and Bradley was electric. His voice blew me away. I'd never seen any of the previous versions, so the story was completely new to me. The acting is great, music is great. A good movie to see. I see possible awards in the future. The songs have been stuck in my head since I watched, especially "Shadow"
I must admit, I was a little skeptical going into it, but this film was great! Within the first 10 minutes, I knew this was going to be great. The acting and chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga is electric. The live performances were masterful, they were filled in such a way, that made you feel like you were right there in the audience. The original songs are actually quite good. It was such a wise decision to cast someone like Lady Gaga, who has such a natural talent, when it comes to singing. Even though the movie is over 2 hours, I wish it was longer, because these characters & story are so interesting. The only thing I didn't like was the arch of Lady Gaga's character when she starts to build her solo career, it felt way to cheesy and predictable. Also in conjunction with this, it only gave her character a few minutes of redemption or growing at the end. Bradley Cooper did an amazing job in his directorial debut.
Great remake from Bradley, oversized expectations have been achive with Lady Gaga and Bradley. Seen the 1976, and excpeted something strong, but it came bigger.
Absolutely loved it! There couldn't be a better remake.
Really good film with a perfect Soundtrack.
Wow! Bradley and Lady Gaga are perfect in this movie. I cried a lot with this couple.
This movie is bloody awesome and Bradley Cooper showed to everyone that he can make a astonishing direction. Just became one of my favorite movies.
Did I want to see this? No, not really. “Urgh, it’ll be a typical love story film” I told my girlfriend. However, I finally caved in and saw it tonight with her. Was I glad I did? Yes.
Bradley Cooper absolutely nailed the acting and directing. This movie is an quite the emotional roller coaster which will leave you feeling all sorts of different things. Let’s not discredit Lady Gaga either, she also played a strong role.
The movie blends song with cinematography very well, overall a very enjoyable experience.
A Star Is Born
Cooper and Gaga were both great in acting and singing.
The runtime was too long, the pacing dragged in the second half and I felt less invested as a result.
I also had an issue with the audio mixing, found dialogue hard to understand.
7.5/10

Being a 'little monster' or not you have to watch this! It's part of the movie culture, it's a remake telling us a classic story, but now in 2018 with the versitile and incrible artist: Lady Gaga. Bradley Cooper was stunning as well: acting and directing he was just professional and killed both. The chemistry with the actors / singers was very natural and Gaga show us why she's a supreme star. The critics around the world don't let me lie. The performances, the soundtrack, the picture, the actors... All was just FLAWLESS.
By far is already a great success... I'm so excited to hear: The Oscar goes to...
It's just perfect. A Star is Born, defines Lady Gaga as a film actress and Cooper as a filmmaker
In one word: Amazing! A must see!
Heartbreaking and predictable musical drama with two great leading actors and an amazing soundtrack.
I wanted to check this with other ppl, once I haven't seen it mentioned in any other review: was it just me or jackson's behavior towards ally on the first half lacks a little respect of consent? He takes out her Piaf eyebrow minutes after he met her, which made me see him as a creep; he carries her out of the bar fight; demands her to sing whenever he feels like; shows the fuck up to places she is (or sends people to); it made it really hard for me to romanticize this affair, even if they had amazing chemistry.
I can't really add anything other reviewers below me have already said. Germanotta owns this film and it wouldn't be the success it is without her.
Profound screenplay! gaga rise as a star throughout the movie but bradley stole the scene, BRILLIANT writer and director!!
I went into this film not sure what to expect. I had see all the previous renditions of this film and wasn't necessarily disappointed by any of them. The only thing going through my head before was yet another remake. However, the fact that Lady Gaga was starring was big enough of a draw to pull me in let alone Bradley Cooper.
From the moment the film started it had my attention. It was filmed flawlessly and the story was fantastic. It really does a good job at showing a plethora of feelings through amazing acting and story telling that we in our millennial generation have been denied until now. It combines the great parts of old Hollywood's story telling style, removes the parts that don't work, and creates a storytelling hybrid fit for any audience member of any generation.
Perhaps even better is the music written for this film. It was done so well that you literally felt like you were there live at the concerts.
Regardless of if you think Lady Gaga is your style or not you need to go see this movie. It is an amazing story of triumph over adversity and the sad realities of trauma in many respects. This film really truly is the best piece of cinematic work I think I have ever seen in 26 years.
In a side note, this is deffinitely an adult movie and not meant for the kiddies. If you get a chance to as well, see this while it is in theater still. The experience of it on the big screen is incomparable to any other experience. The sound is without a doubt amazing.

This was a good movie but not a great movie (this will not be a popular opinion). First the good stuff: Lady Gaga was perfect for and in this role - acting singing, chemistry, song writing - all fantastic. The chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Gaga was believable and, at times, breathtaking. The first two thirds of the movie had a great arch and captured us (as a friend, who watched the movie with me, said, "I could watch the first part of this movie on repeat.") I am also a big fan of about 5 of the songs, and would add them to my library without hesitation, they are beautifully written. Now, the not so good stuff: the last third of the movie was too long - it could easily be cut by 20 minutes, but Bradley Cooper, as director, was more than a little self indulgent with his own scenes (we got the struggle, drawing it out didn't serve the storytelling). Ally's character arch was disappointing. As her star rose she didn't learn to love what Jack saw in her. She didn't learn to take ownership of her own story, the very gift Jack was trying to give her. Ally's story wasn't resolved until the very last moments of the movie, it was eclipsed by Bradley's directorial obsession with Jack's decline, belying the original premise of all the STAR IS BORN movies and lessening her triumph. I guess what moved it from great to good, for me, was that the first two thirds proved it could be great but the last third got hijacked (no pun intended). I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10.
