My god... Does Ava DuVernay know that you can actually zoom out a camera? I've never seen so many "closeup" face shots in a single movie in my entire life. I'll never be able to get Oprah's giant-sized face out of my mind...
As for the movie itself, It's a bit all over the place. Some parts and themes are very well-done, such as Meg's journey to accept herself, while others are really half-baked (especially the relationships between Meg & Charles Wallace, Meg & Calvin, etc). Too many things just get thrown together or just suddenly happen by sheer "coincidence" without a solid lead-in or development. This could have definitely used some additional scenes and runtime to flesh characters and their relationships between each other out a bit more. Reese Witherspoon's character is actually my favorite of the 3 "Mrs."'s. Oprah and Mindy Kaling's characters definitely did not hit home.
Visuals were pretty stunning for the most part, but sometimes went a bit too overboard. Don't even get me started again on the cinematography and editing... This movie definitely had potential and I was excited to watch it, but it just misses out on some major points. It was enjoyable overall for the visual fest and seeing the world of A Wrinkle in Time, but other than that it is just an average film. I'd temper my expectations for sure. 5/10 as it is just an average movie...
Apparently this is just the third $100+ million budget movie directed by a woman. I'm not sure that Ava DuVernay's movie is going to help buck that trend...
And YOU get acting lessons!..and YOU get acting lessons!..Aaaaaaaaaaaand YOUUUU get acting lessons!!!
Surreal, psychedelic nonsense that somehow takes an interesting idea, game cast, and state of the art effects to make a tedious, dull bowel movement of a film. Now that's talent. If you thought Dark Tower was bad, you ain't seen nothing yet. 2/10
Kinda okay-ish movie. It felt awkward sometimes, like, really awkward, especially the acting. I mean, sometimes the chatacters were not behaving like normal human beings.
Besides, if I hear someone saying "Charles Wallace" one more time, i'm gonna lose it.
They had an exceptional multifaceted diamond and they replicated a rhinestone Happy Meal toy - glitzy today, forgotten tomorrow. I couldn't be more disappointed with the producers, director and screenwriter of this movie. Full disclosure, my life has been enriched by the world of Madeleine L'Engle. I discovered her writings in college and quickly devoured as many of her novels as I could find. Even reading WRINKLE again, 35 years later in anticipation of the film, I was totally captivated by her world view, philosophy, theology, scientific brilliance and her grasp of the struggles of childhood, and, indeed the world. All that was sublime about her writings was stripped away in this production and replaced with mundane imitations. The quotes of Mrs. Who, drawn from the great minds of time, were replaced by post-modern or contemporary banality. The awesomeness of Mrs. Which was reduced to a Disney fairy godmother. The excentric muddle that was Mrs. Whatsit was stripped of her very essence. And, the exceptionalness of Charles Wallace and his special connection to his sister were totally lost in this film (and what possessed them to make him adopted?). Whole plot lines were abandoned and the story was transformed to something unrecognizable. The themes of character, right, perseverance, courage, faithfulness, faith and wisdom were cast aside for a weak new age drivel about self exceptance, which missed L'Engles point entirely about self-worth being built on finding our strengths in our weakness. That said (Ok, that ranted) you can't fault the actors. They gave good performances of what they were given. Storm Reid is an absolute jewel and I look forward to seeing more of her. Special effect were laudable, but the variety of worlds was lost. Few time have I given a film a worse rating - I give this a 2 (terrible) out of 10. Do your kids a favour - DON'T take them to this movie and ruin the experience of L'Engle's wolds. Instead, buy them the book(s), or better yet, read the book to them at bedtimes. That was how L'Engle wrote it, each chapter a bedtime read for her kids, aged 7, 10 and 12. [Family Adventure SciFi]
I'm keeping this one short because I have zero good things to say about this horrible movie.
A Wrinkle in Time is extremely unbalanced, strangely devoid of tension, and very scarreted about the tone. With powerful colors, bright parttersn and exuberant children, this new look from director Ava DuVernay's on this story squeezes through time and space, not knowing how to land any of it. Relying on room-wide music to provide the missing emotional connection and plastering huge plot holes this movie is one hot mess from the first to the third act. There's no saving grace in this movie, not even the acting of Hollywood top actors like Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon or even critically acclaimed newcomers Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
Every generation gets The Never-Ending Story they deserve, This is not that movie
2,4/10
Pretentious!!! Watching a child screaming "LOOK AT ME!", over and over is less pretentious than this film. There is no character development, at all, for any characters. There is so little story that massive amounts of the film time are wasted trying to impress us with the way over used special effects. Seriously, did we need a 10 minute transformation scene. Only one of the plot points is resolved and at the point in which it finally gets around to it, I just could not care anymore.
Boring.
Save yourself some agony, just watch the trailer and make up any story in your own head about what the movie is about and skip watching this garbage.
Terrible. This is what happens when you try to follow the book too closely and not realize book to movie does not always work. The earliest Harry Potter films were awkward, the latter ones were excellent with great pacing and a logical flow. If you haven't read the book, please, read it for the superior experience.
I liked it! Just shows you that if you keep thinking positive, you'll see more brightness in the world. Everything is already dark as it is... a bit of 'light' is something we all need.
Just saying.
Are you serious? Besides making Oprah big as a god you say Nelson Mandela was a hero to mankind? Don't let your kids watch this!
went because a friend had just finished the book. he fell asleep before it finished .. The visuals were cool, but the story was lacking.
A fine enough film until the third act falls flat, like a three course meal where everything is fine until the desert comes but they don't have what you ordered and what they end up serving you is bland and hard to swallow.
Staying with the idea of the unbalanced meal, half of the characters disappear in the middle of the film (WTF) and this wouldn't be so bad except there the most interesting characters in the whole affair. The special effects are well done until they, too, disappear, making the third act feel drawn out, like waiting for the check when you have nothing left to say and can't find the waiter anywhere.
For those of you with good taste you're gong to have a lot on your plate with this, and many of you probably won't be able to finish it.
The movie picked up after Reese Witherspoon, Oprah, and Mindy Kaling left. Sadly there were about 40 mins left of the movie.
The movie before that:
- Mindy Kaling looked awkward, esp. in those weird dresses which in turn made her running look more awkward! Oprah looked out of place and hideous, Reese was OK minus her white outfit.
- The camera work was horrible. I hate when they "shake" the camera. I didn't get the point of showing the girl's ear so many times at the beginning of the movie. I kept on expecting something to happen in regards to her ear or hearing but no such thing happened.
It is sad when the best part of the movie was the animation at the end, when they showed the title. And the music was good. Quite a few famous singers in there.
The kids' acting was really good, esp. the little boy. And for some reason Michael Pena stood out.
Let me start by discussing my history with this story, both in book and celluloid form: I was recommended the original novel in second grade, but couldn't get into it; I was too enthralled by computer games and television for it to interest me. In sixth grade, my homeroom teacher made it required reading; I was a bit hesitant to try it, but, when I did, I enjoyed it so much that I read the sequels later on in middle school, even though it wasn't required. To this day, that's the only book that was required reading for my entire class--at any point in school--that I actually liked. When the ABC telefilm came on, I started to watch it...but, then it got too late, and I had school the next morning, so, I taped the rest...and never watched it. Later on, I got the DVD from the library, but, it took multiple attempts to finish it. As an adult, I read/listened to the entire Time Quintet again, and it still held up, even though I wasn't too enthused by L'Engle's other works, especially A Ring of Endless Light, which I didn't care for even in DCOM form. When I heard that Wrinkle was getting the big screen treatment, I was curious what the House of Mouse would do with it; would they bring new life to it like they did the Muppets, or would they butcher it like they did Star Wars with The Last Jedi?
Unfortunately, I have to say that this falls into the latter category. To me, the best thing about this film was seeing Rowan Blanchard (Girl Meets World) in a role that was very different from Riley Matthews. If only she had gotten more screen time. The rest of the movie falls flat. Oprah Winfrey's performance was awful; while Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling were attractive, they also were just awkward here. The flick also takes too much liberty with the novel; so much so, I'd hate to see Ms. L'Engle's reaction to this if she were still alive. As it is, she probably was turning in her grave at this movie's release. Not only was the story butchered, but the Christian elements were removed as well. Fans of the books who are also part of the Way will likely be disappointed by that. Yes, the special effects were good, but, you can get that pretty much anywhere these days.
In short: Go read--or listen to--the book and its sequels; don't even bother with this mess.
quem gostou desse filme = mal gosto
Went in after reading the reviews not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. It's not great and has a good few fails but it's better than you may have been led to believe. It's a kid's story after all so you should view it as such and my two preteens seemed to enjoy it.
So this may be an unpopular opinion, but I really liked this movie. The effects and colours and innovative scenes kept me occupied without the storyline. But the storyline also kept me interested until the end, the film was unique and had elements I had never seen before. The actors were great too (Reese Witherspoon being my favourite), but the child actors held their own too.
This movie just doesn't quite work. I think kids would probably enjoy this more than adults. It's well made but I just didn't get invested into the story. The story is weird and doesn't make a ton of sense but that is fine, I was expecting that. The opening is very slow and I just wanted to get past it so I can see all the supernatural things start. This is visually stunning and by far the best part of the movie. The acting was meh. It's great to see such a diverse cast in a blockbuster. The child actors were fine but Charles Wallace's character was very annoying. I kinda hated the cinematography. They were way too many extreme close ups of all the characters. I felt like it got to the point were it was almost every other shot. The shaking cam stuff was used too much too.
Suffers from bad pacing and being too short. As well as a giant Oprah in a back yard, yet no one notices. "You get to save Chris Pine and you get to save Chris Pine and you get to save Chris Pine!' You also have Reese Witherspoon who can turn into a giant piece of CGI flying lettuce. The movies heart and charm is what made me kind of like it. I just will forget I seen the movie, either by tomorrow or within 2 hours of seeing it.
It's got a great message at its heart, but it's far too melodramatic, corny and just plain boring to be anything other than laughable.
Visually stunning but not a captivating movie. Then again, considering the source material, it just doesn't seem the thing to translate well into a movie. I've watched all the movie adaptations of A Wrinkle in Time and they all fall flat in similar ways which suggests the source is the issue.
Sweet enough. Just a shame it doesn't finish as great it starts.
'A Wrinkle in Time', I think, starts off very nicely. It gives a satisfactory background to the main character, while it builds the intrigue well. Unfortunately, it does drop off as it goes on - but not to the point that it hindered my enjoyment, it is a noticeable step down though. I really like the special effects, I think they look terrific throughout.
Onto the cast. Storm Reid does a respectable job as Meg, her performance arguably gets better as things progress - which is the opposite to the film overall. Chris Pine is underused in his role, but the casting of Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling is good - Zach Galifianakis too. I didn't actually find Deric McCabe's character, Charles Wallace, annoying like most seemingly did.
Surprised to see that this has a low rating across the board. I've never read the Madeleine L'Engle novel so perhaps that has something to do with it? I do agree the writing isn't necessarily great either. Each to the own, but I genuinely enjoyed it I can't lie.
Oh jeez, what were Disney thinking! Despite a fairly decent cast, the performances seemed really weak. To be honest, the actors that can act didn’t seem to have many lines to bring out any performance and the ones that couldn’t act did (I’m talking to you Oprah!). This is a film that has really relied on the effects to get it through which are good but the rest of it is a dire disappointment. I did spend my time wishing Disney had the rights to The Neverending Story and brought that up to date instead of this. Well, I’ve seen it but it’s not a film I’d watch again.
Too focused on the pretty and not enough in the story in my opinion.
God this movie was cringey as fuck
Poor movie all around...cgi was good just was all over the place
Well, we're not in Kansas anymore! In fact, I'm not sure where we are in the movie, other than some kind of Mumbo Jumbo universe of pretension and colour. I'm not familiar with the book, so wasn't sure what to expect, but for the most part, this film disappointed me.
It's just awful. It's like it was just made to give the opportunity to someone famous to appear larger than life.
To be honest, I was really disappointed with the movie....still am.....I don't know if I should watch it again or not, to try and see if I missed anything.... but everything really confused me and seems so incomplete and all over the place, it was all going so fast and it was messy. As a children's movie (for like kids from 7-10) it could be a really good movie...but for anyone who will actually be looking for a proper story beyond the magic and wonderland like feeling the movie has, it won't be an enjoyable movie.
The animation is great, characters quite interesting, but yet.... really disappointed...
Please, somebody, tell me if this was maybe supposed to be like a sequel? And I'm supposed to watch like one more movie...I did see there was a 2003 version. But as I just quickly skipped through it, but it didn't seem connected in any way...It made me actually think that the 2018 version was a shot at a remake...
horrible movie, to deep to keep my children's attention. to bleak and depressing for adults.
I honestly wished this movie would be awesome, but besides a buttload of CGI and costume changes it was rather weak. I want to read the books as the universe seems promising but I didn't get anything from the movie plot wise. it was a bit of a mashup of vague information. really underwhelming.
I was so excited about the movie and I watched the movie without reading any review. What a waste of time. It can't be worst than that.
Not so up, not so down... The power of love, blah blah blah
With a movie adaptation of a book that was so widely praised and accepted, you can never really live up to the hype or nostalgia of the book. That being said, it was beautifully made. The colors, the designs, and the special effects were great. Don't go in expecting perfection, don't go in expecting more than a good kid-friendly Disney film and you can really enjoy it.
the part in which this world is well, when they go to the other is much effect without much meaning or history, a disappointment

3.5/10
This is movie is pretty much an excuse for Oprah to be bigger than everyone else in the film.
No, really.
The casting director on this should be shot. All performances felt so, very, incredibly fake. The only believable character was played by Chris Pine. EVERYONE else we come across is just awful. It could be the writing, the directing, etc, but the actors seem to be at fault here. It seemed so important to them to have a diversified racial palate of actors, that maybe they were just looking for a race, as opposed to an actual performance. I am not being racist, just look at the film and you will see what I mean.
The visuals were ok, but clearly very CGI. They didn't even try to get the lighting right on many parts, and that disgusts me for what this movie (original story from the book) could have been.
There is no development. You are thrown into these weird, unexplained characters, with a moody, but yet expressionless character (Meg). Then all of a sudden, they are on another planet, with some random dude joining them (Calvin), then suddenly the mothers (whatever the shit you call the big 3) disappear. Like. Why are they even in the movie? Idk.
I want my time back.
