This movie has been on my To Watch list for ages, and now that I've finally gotten around to watching it, I have no idea why I added it in the first place.
'Adventureland' exemplifies 'snoozefest mumblecore', and effectively breaks zero new ground. Having to watch both Eisenburg and Stewart twitch and stutter and be all stupidly awkward for 107 minutes was interminable. Psychology classes should refer to this film when teaching Nervous Tics 101.
Also, the filmmaking itself was sketchy and disconnected, almost as if the director skipped the day in film school where they taught everyone how to end a scene.
When a character in your film expresses a profound dislike for a song on the soundtrack of the film, maybe it's time to rethink the music you chose for the soundtrack. Does this film even have a soundtrack, or is this just a collection of the least costly songs (i.e. Rock Me Amadeus) to license from the late 1980s?
Was there a point to any of the colourful supporting characters? Nope! Was there anything in this film that cannot be classified as First World Problems? Nope!
I don't hate this film, but only because it sucked away most of my will to criticize, and left me with no energy to actively dislike it. But if I remember who originally recommended it, I may punch them in the neck.
Great movie, unfortunately some idiot thought it would be smart to market it as a Superbad type movie, which it isn't at all, so people were disappointed when they saw it. It's far better on the second or third viewing than on the first so don't write it off after watching it once. And to the people who think that Kristen Stewart isn't a good actress, having subtle facial expressions is not a bad thing, she does an incredible job in this movie (and others like the Runaways and Into the Wild). Eisenberg is a shitty actor but he's bearable in this one. It also has one of the greatest soundtracks ever.
A whole 107 minutes I was wondering where I was looking at. Storyline is, in my opinion, crappy with no clue about what is going to happen and why it is happening. Thumbs down for me.
Good "coming of age" drama/comedy.
