There's no doubt why this film took home an award for cinematography at Sundance as this was shot wonderfully, if only there was a bit more depth to the narrative.
I was expecting more from this film. It was good but I think the story could have been told in a better way. I felt like something was missing but I can't say exactly what it is.
What turns this film into something good is David Lowery's direction. It's a beautiful film to look at. The cinematography is very beautiful, with sequences shooted in a very Terrence Malik style, very beautiful visually and the soundtrack is amazing too.
Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck and Ben Foster deliver very strong performances but sometimes, as we all know, good performances are not enough.
