Alice, Sweet Alice 1976

A proper older slasher with an unexpected twist. Great shots and interesting use of color.

Not even sure how to review this film.
I liked the camera work, and I always enjoy a view into the past of film making - the terrible exaggeration, the obvious studio work, the props, the fake blood, the terribly inappropriate fondling and hypersexualisation of underaged girls as well as fat jokes and stigmatising mental illnesses…

I was surprised by the reveal and consequently started to rethink every scene from the start.

Whomever the murders are by, the motif, or trigger in each case would have to be jealousy, I suppose.

Normally I have to slug through older movies and can’t really view them like I view newer movies. But this was so entertaining, I loved it.

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Alice Sweet Alice’:

  1. That reveal was a major disappointment — and also the precise moment I knew I wouldn’t be reviewing this film with much praise. I don’t even understand what her actual motive was.

  2. The only creepy things from this film were the landlord and his music.

  3. It felt a lot longer than it ever should have felt.

Is sweet young Alice responsible for the terrible murders going on around her? I'm not going to tell you, but despite the hysterical acting from some of the adult performers, this is a reasonably competent little slasher pic that gets better as it goes along.

Seems like the reveal is done way too early, and kind of deflates the rest of the movie from that point. But in the end it's an interesting early slasher that turns out more classy than some of its brethren. It has hints of giallo even.

Classic? Almost. The story outline on paper may sound clever and twisting but it's execution was draining to watch. The movie peaked very early then had spells of boredom. The complex plot wasnt complex at all. I'd rather watch the bad seed which had a young killer who also had more sides too her personality and schemed/manipulated. Alice is just crazy from the go, and I would have been fine with that if it had been entertaining.

Alice is a disturbed young girl who, like all older siblings, enjoys torturing her younger sister, her neighbours, her aunt, and anyone else who gets in her way. But when Alice's younger sister winds up dead before her first holy communion, will she take the fall - or is it someone else's doing? The mystery grows deeper as her nagging aunt is butchered in the apartment staircase, Alice's father winds up dead, and their apartment landlord is stabbed through the heart, and Alice's psychological assessment comes up with some startling answers. The film is intriguing and suspenseful, and, as a plus, Brook Shields dies within the first 20 minutes (she couldn't act then and she can't act now). The only problem is the mystery is revealed half and hour before the film's conclusion, but director Alfred Sole manages to keep the suspense going even after the startling revelation.
