Don’t ever be so cocky to think that just because you can afford to solo sail the Indian Ocean, you should. Unless you have a death wish of course, in which case you’re a twat from the start and this is just natures way of weeding people like you out.
Snore... no diaglogue. Got pretty boring towards the end. I preferred open water to this.
this is weak, really weak. so cliched, you already know exactly what happens, tired old crap.
the protagonist is a fucking idiot who you prey for his death.
If you are expecting to be dragged through a roller coaster of action and excitement, you will certainly be disappointed. What I acquired from this movie is the stream of bad luck which this sailor was exposed to and his wit in attempting to stay alive. Well played Redford, very thought provoking.
This isn't really a must watch considering it isn't to most eventful lost at sea movie, it also isn't very dialogue driven and can have you asking what's gonna happen the rest of this movie not because it's thrilling but cause ur curious as to why this movie was made. Not that this movie is that bad it's actually a solid watch just the screenplay dosen't seem too enthralling to me, and it would seem hard for any actor to shine in this role.
Saw this a few years ago...Fantastic film. 5 stars
Weak sauce.Boring, not even r.redford can save the movie when movie sucks.
This movie was very entertaining, however, let me paint you a picture. Imagine if, instead of the original ending, when Robert Redford was lying there dejected in the life boat, ready for death, a boat FULL to the brim of Somali pirates showed up.
Then, one of them jumps onto his "raft" and says "LOOK AT ME, I AM THE CAPTAIN NOW!"
That would have been incredible.
This movie is great.
The fact that you want him to do things differently in all the bad choices he makes proofs that you're involved with his well being and therefore the film does for me what films are supposed to do.
Trigger a feeling... and that is a difficult task.
Except for fustration, that easily acomplished just try and watch the B-movie open water 2. This script is so full of rediculous acts that my only thought was; "These actors must have had so many commentary on the director that it's a wonder they even managed to finish the film." This film did not arouse any feeling of frustration.
My only unanswered question in this film was. Was it Robert Redford's own ring?
Let's google :-D
Least amount of words used in a movie I have seen.
Beside 1 short monologue at the beginning of the movie and a very short radio conversation. The only things the lead actor is saying are 'Shit' 'Fuck' and 'Help' (a few times.)
Intriguing movie that stayed interesting until the end. You get a lot of pitty for Redford with all the bad lukck he has throughout the movie. They did not make him a 'conveniently' smart individual, just an old man who has experiences with being at sea and realistic responses on the situation he his in. I constantly wondered what went on in his head.
It is a bit repetitive and slightly predictable though.
Robert, robert, robert.... So Bad
Is it fair that I compare the pictures on the ocean of "Life Of Pi"" with "All Is Lost"?
I am not really sure about it. But if you would, the picture of "Life of Pi" would be better.
The pretty old Robert Redford alone on an ocean with his boat. There nearly no dialogues. I am pretty sure that there are less then 200 words spoken. And I did not got bored. That is not easy to do something.
Redford did an amazing performance in this movie - if not his best. At least for a long time.
I'm no seaman so this was at least intriguing without all of the nuances of being unbelievable. All is not lost yet Robert.
Wow this is just amazing! My favorite movie at the moment!
All is Lost present us a man in a boat and it's everything we get. No back story, we don't know absolutely nothing about this man's life, the only thing we really need is to follow the most complicated part of his journey in the sea. The struggle of a man for his life when there is nothing he can do to fight against nature.
There is almost no dialogue but despite that, this film never bored me! Visually it's great and the ending scene is absolutely beautiful.
Robert Redford is the only star of this film and he really shines with an intense and gritty performance. An amazing one man show!
Not for nothing is this film compared to Gravity, and like the former, this is a strong, tense battle for survival held together by a great performance by one actor. In many ways, this is even more minimalist than Gravity, with virtually no dialogue and rather less showy effects or visual splendour to captivate. Instead, the film relies on a fantastic performance by Redford and a director who expertly builds the tension as the situation becomes increasingly desperate. Initial reactions to the ending may vary, and whilst for some it may lack the cathartic release many may feel the film needs and is rather abrupt, it is true to the rest of the film in its complete focus on Redford and it's ambiguity provides an interesting insight into your own mindset depending on your interpretation.
If there is one thing to point out, then it's the fact that this is Robert Redford's movie. It documents events that happen over the course of eight days out in the ocean. There are no other actors and the initial monologue has more words than the whole movie even gets close to. The visuals are slick (thought I'm not sure about the color correction they did) and has some cool shots (too bad I saw the water-sliding ones in Leviathan already). The only gripe I had is that my expectations were set too high due to some extremly positive reviews hailing from Cannes. I didn't find anything profound in this and no strong emotional connection either. Maybe that is for the older viewers who manage to fabricate an analogy to life in there...

I think you can only appreciate this film if you know what to expect. It's not a block buster, it's definitely not dialogue heavy (far from it!) and I have to say it's not a movie you should expect to like. I think this is a great piece of acting, direction and story line given the setting - a stranded sailor in a boat doesn't give you many possibilities for a story arc but what it does, it does extremely well.
I don't think you can allegorise this film too much either, it is just a view into one period of someone’s life. I also think if you look at the beginning and the end you may not take from it what you expect. Just my view but I think you could view it as he didn't actually survive, the opening dialogue suggests this and the end could be taken as a dream. Or is it just the contents of his message in a bottle at the start?
Overall though I admire the film and will watch it again. Do I like it? I'm on the fence with that one, it has many laudable qualities but do I like it? I'm not so sure.
