Although the bar was extremely low, this is way better than the abysmal second season, that Mackie completely ruined. Beautiful animation, too.
I totally agree that while this anime is pretty basic, it's still better than season two of the live action, though no fault of Mackie's, the writing and direction were horrendous.
If you like the Altered Carbon TV series, this movie is a "must watch" !!!
It got some awesome moments, but also some! terrible acting, lines and animation like a medium videogame. Quite okay and better than s02, but could have been waaaay better.
Also plotholes like the big reveal. Nobody noticed that all bosses had the same annoying laughter AFTER the ritual? Really nobody? I did not feel the twist as the Yakuza. The whole thing seems like a motivation perk. I can not believe that "soldiers" from other clans did not die for their business. So what is the big deal? Although it seems so important for them, that they quickly work with the gouverment, (which other medias suggest they would never do, even in much more justified causes) because they are fighting with one CTAC Spec Ops in full gear.
But the fighting scenes are lovely to watch.
I liked it better than season 2 and that both include Takeshi Kovacs and yakuzas
The animation style is amazingly done, and... that's all.
Poor story, very predictable, a lot of the fight scenes are mostly surrealistic, like most anime, and therefore don't get you into the feeling of danger the characters might be in... Also, you'll have to be hardcore fan of Yakuzas and their honor code and method to enjoy this.
On another point, Why bring back Kovacs? This was a perfect occasion to expend the universe of Altered Carbon out of a single character and some sidekicks coming and going. Humanity colonized planets, there are probably hundreds of billions of humans, why only focusing on one? It makes sense in the series, as a continuity, but in an animated movie advertised as "from the world of Altered Carbon", you'd expect to find a story in the same universe, not a somehow sequel/prequel with the same main character than the original series, but without any link, repercussion or evolution between the two.
The concept was amazing but very poorly developed, written and directed. Beside the astonishing animation, nothing to see here.

Aside from the fighting scenes which are amazing, this is a total disappointment.
Not an interesting story, quiet boring to be honest. The graphics and animation were good though.
Story wise it's pretty boring but the fight scenes (which are like 70% of this movie) look fantastic.

Wow. This was better than the entire season 2 of Altered Carbon, although you might need to be a fan of Japanese Yakuza films to really appreciate it.
