Im Nicaraguan, and the facts are not wrong. Its good to people to know a little bit of history of our countries.
An entertaining 2 hours movie, following(loosely) the story of pilot Barry Seal and his involvement with drug cartels and CIA.
Beautifully shot, with nice aerial footage, it has a very 70's feel that I really enjoyed. The story is well paced for the most part, even though I think about 15 minutes could have been cut and not missed.
Tom Cruise delivers once again a good performance, playing convincingly the main character. I really liked the protagonist's character; while morally questionable, it no doubt has a lot of charisma that pulls you in. Also nice that he doesn't feel like a super awesome action hero, but looks more like a regular dude who finds himself between a rock and a hard place.
I enjoyed all the famous people that Seal manages to meet, from Noriega to George W. Bush. It really connects the film with the real world.
In the end, nothing crazy good, but still a nice way to spend an evening. 7.5/10
Disappointing Tom Cruise didn't have any running scenes, nobody fake runs better than Tom Cruise.
This movie has its fun parts but the pacing is a little off. Doug Liman does some interesting things with the camera but nothing extraordinary. I found the Columbia story line the most interesting. I really like Narcos and wanted more Escobar.
It is an interesting film, but it never quite works. I mean are we supposed to empathise with Cruise's character? Cause he is a bad dude, no questions. He may not be shooting people but he taking money from murderers and facilitating the expansion of their business. I don't think that aspect was ever really explored, the consequences of the business he was in.
Have you seen Narcos? Yes, now you know why the fat guy with a black beard from the CIA was always fucking Javier Peña's joint operations with the Colombian Army, the US ambassador didn’t want to expose the Colombian Government to end the immunity of the Cali Cartel (IRAN-CONTRA) and the real reason for Peña's resignation from the DEA.
The movie is probably the best one starred by Tom Cruise in at least a decade... Not a very difficult achievement, indeed.
While being entertaining, it manages to critique. the US in a subtle and sarcastic way.
The film critiques the self indulged and naif belief that most of the US continue to have about their own country and government, like that they always have the moral high ground and that the motivation for any of their interventions is to save, protect and facilitate democracy in the world... When the reality is that they create and feed their own daemons, in secrecy, for their own interest, but when they go rogue the push the western world into a holy war, like going after Sadam Hussain under the excuse of weapons of mass destruction, the hunt for the former CIA trainned, armed and finaced assets Bin Laden and its group Al-Qaeda, the War on Terror, The War on Drugs,etc...
American Made is a mix of Wolf of Wall Street and Cranston's The Infiltrator. Tom Cruise pilots this enjoyable film which may have a few too many stops but is an enjoyable ride, nonetheless.
A history lesson I never knew I needed :thumbsup_tone4:
American Made is a film about the life of pilot Barry Seal, played by Tom Cruise, who becomes involved with the CIA, the Medellin Cartel, and the DEA while running guns and smuggling cocaine. The film is directed by Doug Liman, who also directed Cruise in The Wall, and is considered to be a return to form for Cruise after the failure of The Mummy. The film is fast-paced and has a jumbled narrative, but Cruise delivers a strong performance and is able to convey Seal's carefree personality. The supporting cast, including Domhnall Gleeson and Sarah Wright, also give solid performances. The film has a 1970s aesthetic, with a strong soundtrack, but it lacks character development and the use of a first-person commentary becomes jarring. Overall, American Made is a superficial but entertaining film that showcases Cruise's acting abilities.
"I'm the gringo who always delivers."
American Made is simply a fun film. Don't know why I hadn't seen it before but I did remember the scene from the trailer were Tom Cruise steps out of plane all covered with coke. And I remember that the trailer gave me different vibes about what this film was. I thought it would've had more action.
Nonetheless though it didn't matter. Tom Cruise rocked, we've got to see Millicent Gergich (Sarah Wright Olsen), it was the first time I saw Brendan Gleeson's son Domhnall in something, loved the kind of Top Gun scene were Barry woke one of his employee's up by tipping his plane with his own and it is always a good sign when you are not bored for a moment in a two hour movie.
American Made is a fun Doug Liman and Tom Cruise team up, but not there best. Still very well worth a watch!
That was some crazy fucked up shit.
At first, the way that the film tries to settle you into the late '70s and early '80s is a little disorienting. The VHS-like resolution seems like overkill. But as the action picks up, the film's effects and tricks make it more fun to watch. It's not a standard delivery technique for certain, and personally, it added a lot to my viewing pleasure.
Tom Cruise plays Barry Seal. Seal is portrayed as a magnetic personality with some questionable morals. He loves his family, it seems more than anything else, and that love sticks to the character during the film's entire run. You never get the feeling that his family's well-being is the primary reason he's taking the risks he is, though. On the one hand, he's concerned that he doesn't have a health plan as he takes a job with the IAC ("CIA") but he takes tremendous chances with the safety of his family anyway. Eventually, he has so much money from gun and drug running, it's actually falling out of suitcases and duffel bags stacked in closets and buried in holes in the ground. Barry is actually in it for the adventure, although that is never told to us in anyway by Director Doug Liman and crew. Seal is constantly trying to shelter and hide his family from the dangers that he himself is kicking up. He shows frustration at times, but never backs away from new "business", no matter how shady.
Enough can't be said about Cruise's performance. He's so good here. I have relayed my thoughts before about how much better he makes every movie that he's in. He's an endlessly entertaining actor and it's fun to see him portray a man who's not an infallible hero or indestructible force. For the last time, I don't really know what kind of freak he is in real life but he is one of the very few actors that I'll watch in anything. The movies that he's made over the last decade and a half have been terrific more often than not.
He went this way!...we went that way!...I said "where'd he go?!" Hollywood says "Wheeeere'd whoooo gooooooooo?!"
Living in Miami, through the Mariel [1980 boatlift], and all the rest of it, made this seem almost like a History documentary. I enjoyed it.
American Made is a great movie that is based on a fascinating true story. The film is well-crafted, with a tight plot that keeps you anticipating what will happen next. Tom Cruise delivers a fantastic performance as Barry Seal, bringing charm, wit, and intensity to the role. Overall, American Made is an outlandish true-to-life story brought to life by excellent performances and skilled filmmaking.
Good story but it should have a better writing.
That was fucking badass. And hilarious. Two Doug Liman movies this year and they're both fantastic. I'm not going to say anything else. You have to see this for yourself. I love it. Technically this isn't a horror movie, but this is all I saw today.
I'm just starting my car!
Not the best from Tom Cruise but it wasn’t a bad film.
Great story, interesting to watch. Pablo actor's play was awesome.
If history teaches us one thing is that every time you partner Tom Cruise and airplanes in the same movie it can't go wrong.
Well, actually there were 3 dead and 1 seriously injured pilots and crew members in a Piper Aerostar crash during filming (may they R.I.P), so I guess it can...
what a nice movie, good comedy on a real story, don't take the movie to seriously , just enjoy like I had
An entertaining film, which is quite incongruous considering the seriousness of the situation. Credit to Doug Liman - he has made a film that once again sheds the American government and CIA in an embarrassing bad light.
If you liked The Wolf of Wall Street or War Dogs, then you'll like this movie.
A bit of a cliched biopic, but it's totally entertaining. It's funny, tight and refreshingly grim. Liman usually ends up delivering an entertaining flick.
I was a bit hesitant to watch this film due to the obvious physical distinctions between the real man this movie was based on, and Tom Cruise. The acting in this movie proved that you don't have to look like the person you are representing (although that would have been great). Very entertaining movie, never a boring scene and quite interesting for anyone who loves films about the drug war and the government operations that go alongside with the drug trade.
I didn't know what to expect from the trailer but i found it very enjoyable and entertaining. The pace and story telling was really good and you get a nice description of the events in a manner not confusing. Cruise was very likable.
This was really good - incredible that it was a true story
Overall I enjoyed it! Cruise is playing good here and so is the rest. The first 30 mins or so I found it a bit confusing at times but after that it's fine. Nice appearance from Escobar!

Great film regarding the 80s and the climate of the time. Character piece masterfully played by Cruise. The main character is morally questionable, but his charisma draws you in and really is a master class on an antihero. I found it engaging and thoroughly entertaining. 8/10
