Tumblr gifs make this movie look way better than it really is.
The best scene of this movie is when they rate their business cards.
Finally a movie that fucked my brain enough to google what the fuck just happened --
Patrick Bateman was hallucinating all the time and he was just portraying the idea of being the opposite of what he was in real life - a coward
I was going to right a review but I have some videtapes to return. Solid watch.
Christian Bale can do anything he wants. 10/10 acting.
Good narcissistic character, with all the traits. Worse, a psycho. Bateman is on the edge of a caricature at times, but that just adds fun and dark humour. Some of the antics are stupid. It's pretty much a one man show movie. I didnt find it that scary.
I thought this was absolutely brilliant. The ambivalence in the story paired with the great satire of the filthy rich and self-obsessed it’s just... chef’s kiss :kissing::ok_hand:
I honestly do not know what all the hype was with this movie...it was rather lame.
Tumblr gifs really do be showing this movie better than it is
I honestly couldn't stand this movie, Patrick Bateman is like an extremely bad mixture of; Norman Bates and Jim Carrey. Such a bad movie.
A bizarre slasher film, American Psycho is some crazy sh**. The story follows a New York investment banking named Patrick Bateman who’s secretly a murdering psychopath whose blood lust grows out-of-control, causing him to randomly kill prostitutes and co-workers. Starring Christian Bale, Josh Lucas, Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto, and Chloe Sevigny, the cast is quite impressive. But the storytelling is incredibly poor, as it’s difficult to tell what’s really happening and what Bateman is imagining (which leads to a lot of plot holes). Also, the violence and nudity is pretty gratuitous. Cheap, exploitative tripe, American Psycho is a pointless film that goes nowhere.
Christian Bale is just perfect in that movie, he really delivers an unbelievable performance.
The movie is pretty good but a little bit dated visually.
There’s a reason why Patrick Bateman has stayed in the zeitgeist for as long as he has.
This thing is absolutely hilarious, it’s so sharp and funny, sometimes even in the most subtle of ways.
I see many people calling it weird and aren’t able to make sense of it, but you need to have a good understanding of the 80s (and the culture on Wall Street in particular) in order to truly appreciate it.
Perfectly acted, perfectly made, bold, unpredictable, substantive, and completely one of a kind.
9.5/10
Psychopathy in the super yuppie 1980s financial district, where a wolf in sheep's clothing runs rampant through the sea of fake grins and phony networking events. Christian Bale really made his name as a leading man in the role of Patrick Bateman, a move that looks bold and prescient in hindsight as many warned it would be career suicide. He's the motor behind this story, on-screen for basically the duration, and able to balance scenes of dark, black humor with later episodes that require him to come completely unhinged.
The first hour is unspeakably funny, engulfing us in Bateman's daily ritual and knee-jerk lust for violence, in the masks he wears to pass muster and the hopelessly superficial assholes he hangs around with. It's absolutely loaded with classic scenes and quotable lines, like "Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?", "Don't just stare at it, eat it" and "My god, it's even got a watermark" and I could joyfully revisit any one of those snippets at the drop of a hat. Every time we start to think it's okay to cheer the serial killer, though, he pulls a blood-chilling stunt that makes us question our own judgment. As the film unfolds, he grows increasingly sloppy, desperately chasing the dragon until he's in so deep that there seems to be no escape.
The climax is a big tonal swing, and though it flirts with the idea of a wild twist at the very end, a lot is left to the viewer and I don't think it completely arrives where it means to. Still, it's a relentlessly entertaining movie that toys with a broad range of emotions and gives us one of the decade's most memorable performances. I could watch this just about any time.
patrick bateman’s horrified reaction when he saw his collague’s business card and said “it even has a watermark” was the most dramatic moment in cinematic history
I didn't like it, the movie was really boring.
Watching Christian Bale in this one is still a joy! Might be the best of his great career. So many memorable scenes! Such a great ending, and such an awesome soundtrack! American Psycho is always a joy to rewatch.
Definitely worth the watch! The bizarre god complex of Bateman is fascinating to watch escalate, and the insanity of the character and the script is off the wall.
Well it's weird! Really weird!
A hilarious satire that while feeling a bit punchy a times, still delivers. Viewing the movie from his lens at the beginning until the end, gives an amazing sense of realization by the end. Great twist, great movie, great lead actor.
transaria com todo mundo nesse filme
It's a brilliant, hilarious satire. It's deeply disturbing, and Bale gives a show-stopping performance, that will have you howling with laughter at the absurdity of a person with such a mindset. The ambiguity of the ending also leaves it open to interpretation, which makes for some good discussion. That's always appreciated.
I've read the book now which was HORRIFYING! It is really hard to read also because of the boring descriptions of everything he observes about the clothes of people around him. But wow I was shocked when I put the book down and the combo book/film is top!! .. I'm glad not all scenes ended up on the screen though :)
An excellent character study of Patrick Bateman played by Christian Bale, shows the sociopathic obsession with materialism in the 1980s. The story can be a little confusing but overall, it's a lot of fun to watch. A decent amount you probably have heard of this movie, but if you haven't, I strongly suggest checking it out.
Without Brett Easton-Ellis's corporate-clean prose to serve as the backdrop (and a scene or two that never in a million years could have made it onto the silver screen), the film adaptation of American Psycho cannot hope to be the book. Luckily, it doesn't, and it defines itself rather than simply mimicking the novel. Christian Bale has a kind of versatility that transcends acting ability, and affects his physical body as well.
A vicious satire on the 80s (and quite relevant in today's society too), commenting on obsession with image, wealth and conformity, the film has a very cold and sterile look and is populated by largely superficial, shallow and unlikeable characters that make it difficult to connect with the plot, with only Chloe Sevigny's character generating much sympathy. What makes the film engaging however is how much humour the film generates from the characters' obsession with trying to present the perfect façade to others (the business card comparisons are a highlight) and Bale's fantastic nuanced performance that drives the film. The sudden switches in his personality mid scene and his monologues throughout the film both to other characters and to the audience lead to some tense, uncomfortable moments.
i have to return some videotapes
im so sigmaa ha ha:money_mouth::100:
so did he kill paul or not?
Ok, this movie is pure gold and let me tell you why.
If you expect horror - go for “psycho” not “american psycho”. This is rather dark comedy. If we got this straight let’s move on.
This movie is about a man who is basically product of his time in capitalist society in america and is (you guess that right) psycho.
He has a perfect routine but it’s just a facade he keeps since something inside him is missing. He needs to be the best and gets psychotic if he isn’t. Also he’s telling multiple times what he’s doing but he lives in a world where nobody’s listening they just see what they want to see. And everybody knows you but nobody remembers your face because they all are so full of themselves.
The movie is based on very controversial book which I also recommend if you want to get deeper altough they did amazing work with this movie. Everything is so good and cherry on top is a great actor’s performance.
Overhyped. It’s a good movie, I enjoyed it especially the second time watching it but people make it seem like it’s the best film ever made when it’s above average at most…
Acting and plot is perhaps some of the best in thriller. But, there's just too much xxx nastiness and gore in this story. Depressing at best.
One of my favorite movies, it's ridiculous and over the top. Definitely worth a watch.
I finally watched this movie after being on my watchlist for years. Somehow I did not fully understand it. The idea was interesting but was everything a dream or did it actually happen? What about the investigation into the main character? Questions over questions… gets really weird the longer you watch…
Though at least you actually think you're in the 80s!
i see where did dexter come from
Christian Bale's performance is great, it brings to life a very interesting main chaeacter. And that's it, there's not much else: a long film, whose highlights are some gore and sex scenes. I would have liked the character to be better resolved. I would return this videotape.
If I had a nickel for every time Matt Ross played a closeted gay man attacked in bathrooms, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
A lot is missing if you have read the book. So much better.
I really expected a lot more from this movie.
Perhaps it's a commentary on yuppie culture, but I believe the larger view is just as valid an interpretation. Perhaps it's a result of viewing this film from the perspective of the 2020s, but as it's been true for many decades, I believe we can credit this great film as an allegory of the rape of the nation and its people by the powerful. That does not take away from the film's clear display of what that does to corrode the psyches of the rapists.
Brilliantly written and executed. Bale is phenomenal as he is in all of his challenging roles.
One of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. Not bad by any means, but it doesn't have anything going for it other than the allegory it's supossed to portray. Anything else besides, Christian Bale's perfomance which is phenomenal.
I am halfway through this and I just can’t get into it. I don’t get it and I’m cool with that. Some people love it but it’s not for me. I had a few chuckles but not enough to continue.
This is a comedy btw
Great, disturbing and very well played by Bale.
This movie is much better than the gifs idiots watch on tumblr
The best scene in this movie is when he murders the women at the apartment building (i want to believe it wasn't just in his head)
I saw people who appreciated this film and people who despised it, and I didn't understand why until I saw it and now I can finally have my say.
This movie is sufficient for me and therefore I can't give it less than 6/10, the screenplay is good and the film itself also flows very well, in fact one and a half hours of it flew by without even noticing, but the good part ends here. American Psycho is based on the final plot twist by the protagonist (that Patrick isn't really a serial killer who kills everyone he sees but is instead a simple desire he has because he wants to change his monotone Wall Street office work life but can't because of how coward he really is in life), which however doesn't work because we understand that it's all a farce ever since Patrick "kills" Paul Allen.
But also about the other people we encounter who interact with Patrick, even if Patrick Bateman really was a killer, how can they not see the two-sidedness of him, the strange way he behaves, in all respects? Even if his desire to be a serial killer were true, it would have been discovered from the first kill, a fact that takes away the realism from the film and makes it more than a thriller, a slasher...
A slasher movie with consumerism in the background...
Fantastic performance from Christian Bale, He totally goes against grain in this movie....I have read that the screenwriter and Director say that they wanted to create an ambigious ending, but they say he definitely committed the murders, however for me they went too far the direction of it all being in his mind, when Dafoe pulls out the Huey Lewis cd, the gun blowing up cars, the body in the bathroom and cupboards all appearing then disappearing, and the chainsaw miraculously killing the girl down the stair, i think its all in his mind! , But I love the movie, great fun, .......and when ever I want to get out of a situation now, I will use the line....."I have some video tapes to return"
I don't know what to react or feel after watching this. Had to watch it because of the memes.
Although, 10/10 for Christian Bale acting. He can do anything.
pretty boring, I don't understandi the hype around it. I also thought there was too much x rated content. For a while I felt like I was watching porn, not a movie
Gay men after writing the most gorey film about internalised homophobia and capitalist's yuppie/consumerist culture: I have to return some video tapes
What a great movie. Of course, Christian Bale takes the cake with the portrayal of Patrick Bateman. All other performances are top notch too. Great use of music and just an overall fun ride. Sidenote: is Bateman the most memeable live action character ever? Comes damn close to it, at least.
I’ve got to return some video tapes
tbh I felt a bit underwhelmed by this but wow i love that women made this movie, also he was so real for immediately hating jared leto
Bale's appearance made me thought the lead was not just an apple of Sodom, but it wasn't until the end of the movie that I realized he was truly an empty man
Never really know what this movie was about, only knowing it through popular osmosis. Glad I watched it though, even though the ending came a bit sudden
What a crazy movie that makes you think about what's actually real and what's not. There are so many scenes and dialogues that make you think about it it's actually happening or not. Truly a classic movie.
An excellent descent into madness that will keep you guessing.
Rated a Connor 10, normal 9
This is a very boring movie. Will never watch again.
I’m probably not artistic enough, but God I wish I never saw this movie.
Gave this movie a 4 on my first watch and now it's a comfort movie and I'm obsessed with it. It grows on you like a fungus.
Christian Bale at it's best!
"I have to return some videotapes."
Egotistical, psychopathic, narcissistic, control obsessive and most importantly: a healthy skin care routine all contribute in creating the perfect American Psycho.
What I love the most about it is the psychological downfall of our main character. The first half is him having absolute control over his life, everything is so neat and precise... until he feels the control he has over his insanity slowly slipping away leading to absolute madness. It's quite the roller coaster and I was absolutely captivated the whole time. Him talking about music before his kills was genius and I couldn't get enough. My favorite moment was the business card comparison and the skin care routine. Every character working in that building had similar names and style, I had difficulty differentiating them the whole movie. Everyone looks the same and that's because they're all american psychos, Patrick Bateman was just another one of them. An absolute icon of a character, I wish there was more of him!
A mix of brutal mercyless violence, hilarious comedy, horror-worthy kills, brillant acting, clever subtext and quotable from beginning to end. Made me think of Mad Men and Dexter constantly. Found myself staring at Christian Bale's hair a little too often.
It's strange that this film is sold as a horror flick. With more humorous quips and mind bending twists in behavior in the protagonist, American Psycho feels more like a psychological dramedy than anything else. The all-around stellar cast really gave a veneer of depth to it's mostly two-dimensional cast, that makes this film a delight rather than irksome. Unfortunately, we don't get any characters more grounded than Patrick Bateman, which hampers our understanding of what's going on a bit, but that is its sole major flaw, which for some will surely only add to the enjoyment, rather than diminishing it
A gloriously twisted movie. One of the best "I wish I could watch that again for the first time" type of films. I did manage to go a long while between viewings, and it paid off. Christian Bale is unhinged. It is a shame that the sequel to this masterpiece is so bad (despite having Mila Kunis). This one is certainly worth watching though, and will undoubtedly be a timeless horror flick.
Rating: 4.5/5 - 9/10 - Highly Recommend
This movie was awesome. Definitely points out that your just the average of your 3 closes friends.
Listen to ‘Hip to be Scared’ after watching this!
Over time American Psycho has garnered some popularity and can now be considered a major cult classic. It feels like there is not really an in between on the quality of this movie. Either you love it or you hate it. But surprisingly I believe I find myself in the middle not hating this film but not loving it either. I Believe Christian Bales performance is amazing I think the concept of the film is really interesting. But I find things like the ending, Cinematography and most of the other actors apart from Dafoe to be below average at best. The whole experience has just left me with a very Luke warm feeling. People who say this movie was the best thing ever feel are exaggerating and people who say its the worst thing every I feel are also exaggerating. Its a passable film not something I would write home about but something I think people should give a try to find out what they think about it.
This is a very funny movie packed with some exciting twists and interesting storytelling that leave the viewer to think about what they just watched. Also, a fantastic lens to look into the lives of investment bankers.
Insanely weird and it gave birth to some good memes
A cinematographic masterpiece.
well liked the movie, gave some ***** **** vibez
Had to take the sanity out of myself to interpret it.
And it was all a dream. How zainy.
An in-depth, exciting and darkly humorous look at a psychopath, disguised as just a typical modern day upperclass man, ending on an ambitious note that makes the audience wonder wtf actually happened.
My punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself.
I kept seeing this as a classic, It was a rather good movie, I really liked the start, but... The ending got a bit wonky. Other than that, Christian Bale is one hell of an actor...
While the social satire is sharp, I felt bludgeoned by the directness of the script as compared to the cutting wit of the novel. American Psycho landed some punches but didn't knock me out, though it's worth viewing for Bale's performance as it's a key stepping stone began Empire of the Sun and The Machinist.
"I wanted only to live in accord with the promptings which came from my true self. Why was that so very difficult?"
jk jk
Cold, cruel humour amplified by an amazing guilty pleasure soundtrack.
Love love love..christian bale is fantastic
i have to return some videotapes.
7,5/10 Christian Bale deserved an oscar for this role!
Only a true psychopath could like Phil Collins and Chris DeBurgh and this is a large part of why I am so fond of this film.
I’m still not sure Christian Bale has topped his performance as Patrick Bateman. It’s hard to wipe the image of him bollock-naked covered in blood running down the corridor with a chainsaw from your mind. I think I speak for many people when I say I wish there was more Bateman in Batman.
http://benoliver999.com/film/2016/12/11/americanpsycho/
fav movie oat right here
the significance of mistaken identity
Well that was effed up, every aspect really, every character so insanely deluded. While it's interesting to enter the mind of a psychopath, the actual unraveling of the plot for this movie (or lack thereof), is alike Bateman's confession - it "has meant nothing."
It has its moments but the entire movie could've been boiled down to the scene in the alley with the homeless guy and his dog. It got really repetitive by the end, it would've worked better as a short.
lol, definitely not what I expected going in, I wasn't prepared for this to be a comedy.
American Psycho Remake In The Works

totally, seen 30 times and still not bored.
Review by Pradipa PRBlockedParent2022-07-03T14:00:12Z— updated 2022-07-09T15:29:47Z
The key takeaway of the film, to me, is its subtle offhand remark of American yuppie culture; the tasteful thickness of the way they jab (okay I'll stop) at how everyone is trying to be like everyone else - "trying to fit in," in Bateman's words - that everyone mistakes someone for another and someone like Patrick Bateman can get away with murder.
The whole film is about him needing to fit in but at the same time stand out.
The film toys with the idea of the murder scenes being an imagination that all happened in Bateman's head, but I say the line is only drawn when the things get more ridiculous. It's even earlier than the one they displayed in the third act - when the ATM shows the message to feed it a cat - but when Bateman started hanging out in Paul Allen's apartment. An investigation was going on: why would Bateman intentionally spread their fingerprints all around? Partly perhaps he did want to get caught - the desire to find out who he really is beneath the mundane sameness of corporate life - as the conversation with the lawyer suggested. Partly, however, is his active imagination playing bigger and bigger role as he descended into madness in this third act, as you can see that right after that scene we get the ATM scene and the car explosion scene where even Bateman himself couldn't believe it just happened.
The director did admit that the ending give viewers a wrong impression of what really happened in the course of the film - so I'm basing my comments on that. The surreal last act seems to be ambiguous, but when you consider the change of demeanor from the realtor in Paul Allen's apartment (and the all-white, recently painted rooms) and the lawyer Bateman talked to, that should be telling of the point of the third act. The eerie interaction, tense acting, and the music really made the last act as the best of the film.
Even when the film is intended as a commentary of 1980s hedonistic yuppie culture, I can still see it being relevant today. The consumerist, "getting into the fad" corporatist culture endures even into the culture of Silicon Valley workers. Patrick Bateman is a that obnoxious guy who really likes to hear himself talk - the kind of Twitter people and YouTube video essayists with celebrity syndrome - and the whole Pierce & Pierce young executives competing against each other to sound smart and look posh are just your typical tech workers taking a jab at politics. Their understanding of the events are just skin deep, but they want to look like the best among themselves. This is why the film is great even in 2022 and I think it will stay great at least in the next 10 years.
