Give Meryl Streep an Oscar for the love of god..
Meryl Streep, why ya gotta be so mean?
On one hand, jeepers, is this film ever brutal. And on the other hand, wow, it could be the most fascinating thing ever, watching this rabidly embittered character tear endless strips of raw flesh off of her poor family members.
There are truly great performances all round, and though I didn't appreciate the tacked-on "upbeat" ending, I can understand why they had to add it for the sake of the less refined cinema-goers who rate movies poorly solely because they have a downbeat ending.
Also, put Julianne Nicholson in all the things.
Cinematically wanting but never dull, the excellent acting on display is enough to make a trip to August: Osage County worthwhile.
A true portrait of a family with real and well-constructed conflicts and characters. Delightful!
