Austenland 2013

I grew up watching regency period drama films, and this film delightfully tipped all those tropes on their heads. It was amusing and honest. If you're unlikely to watch something like Pride and Prejudice or Jane Eyre, you're probably not going to like this movie. But if those movies hold a soft spot in your heart, then this movie could be perfect for you.

This is my guilty pleasure movie.
I would have said Pride and Prejudice was, but I don't feel guilty about that movie.

This film was hilarious, and I'm so glad it bore my concerns out about "Martin."

This is quite seriously one of the worst things I have ever had the excruciating misfortune to witness the first and last 20 minutes of. Jesus fucking christ.

Keri Russell stars in the satirical comedy Austenland. The story follows a young woman obsessed with the works of Jane Austen, who takes a vacation to a retreat in the English countryside where she gets to live out a Jane Austen style adventure. Russell gives a great performance and has good chemistry with her co-stars. Additionally, Jennifer Coolidge and Jane Seymour make for a strong supporting cast. Still, the writing is a little weak and the plot doesn’t always seem like it knows where it’s going. But despite its ups and downs, Austenland is fun and entertaining.

Fell flat for me. I wasn't sure who Jane would end up with for most of the film- and with Jane Austen, you should always know. The Darcy-esque character didn't get much screen time so I wasn't sure how I felt about him. Jennifer Coolidge was funny but if you don't like her humor you won't enjoy this. The best part for me was James Callis' character-- always a good time watching Gaius from Battlestar Galactica act in other things. He's kinda the same character as he is in Bridget Jones-- sort of. As a Pride and Prejudice super fan, I was disappointed. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, or Bridget Jones's Diary are much more worth the watch and have much better Darcys.

The movie, take it or leave it; I didn't like it that much. But the soundtrack was surprisingly good. A shockingly large number of original tracks for a 'romcom' that's not full of headliners. And that "Hot In Herre" sequence is hilarious.
