In the first half of the film I was very surprised to see the bad reviews on this film. But by the end of the film I could see why. I can't say much without spoiling anything, but the unnecessary playtime, highlighting characters that you don't really need to know about or if you did didn't connect with the whole Joker story. Regardless, I rated this film an 8, because of the very talented animation and (with the help of a R rated) helped the "adult" version of a Batman vs. Joker work out. I loved this film in the end, finally seeing the dark history of the Joker and how he became "crazy".
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I know the decision to pair Batman and Batgirl is controversial, but Timm & Co. have previously planted the seeds for this sort of thing in Batman Beyond, so it didn't bother me the way it seems to have bothered many. I also appreciated that rather than just making Barbara a prop for the Joker, the film gave her her own story, with her own thematic tie to the traditional Killing Joke story, where she too has to face the abyss and decide whether to let it consume her. It wasn't perfect, but trafficked in many of the same themes and Tara Strong in particular did a great job at conveying the complexity of the character and her conflicting motivations.
The second half of the film, which follows the source material more closely, was tremendous. Featuring a bravura performance from Mark Hamill who has, to my mind, become the definitive Joker, the film does well at embracing Moore and Bolland's themes of Joker's nihilism contrasted with Batman's steadfastness even in the face of unspeakable horrors. The art, the score, the animation, and the atmosphere of the adaptation were superb. It managed to be unflinching without devolving into grimdark nonsense, and even showed a fair amount of discretion in execution. It's a worthy exploration of the themes of the original (which the film takes from dutifully), and a superb culmination of Timm, Hamill, Strong, and the rest of the DCAU team's work with these characters.
So that's what happened to Barbara. Always wondered how she ended up in the chair. The ending with the Joker and Batman just having a laugh really caught me off guard. Brilliant.
Well, this is a shame. This comic is one of the best of all time. Seriously, it is amazing. So you'd think that a animated movie adaptation from it would be great for sure.
And then you start the movie and it is about Batgirl going on a random, generic mission. Batgirl getting annoyed and angry with Batman. Batgirl banging Batma- wait... what? WHAT IS GOING ON? THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE COMIC'S STORY.
Yea, they literally just tacked on some junk to make this at least 75min. Frankly, that first 30ish minutes in is worthless. I have no idea who wrote that and thought it matched the tone for the source material.
Then we do get into the direct adaptation. Now it is sticking very close to the comic, down to the same exact lines and frames. Part of me likes that, but the other part wonders why it is even needed. Why not just read the comic if it is going to stick directly to it? Well, whatever, it is great dialogue and a fantastic plot.
And then I go back to thinking it doesn't fit the comic well enough. In some scenes, the timing doesn't feel right at all. Some of the lines just don't come out like I feel the scene's tone is supposed to be. One big moment is the dramatic shooting. Gordon's reaction to that event does not seem nearly as emotional as it should be.
Finally, the closing scene starts of great. Mark Hamill, oh, I don't think I mentioned this yet. Mark Hamill is great as always. So Mark Hamill starts it off, and that leads to some combined laughing. His works, he knows how his character laughs. But Batman... his laugh seems really fake to me. That kind of ruins the impact of that finale.
Not as bad as the epilogue scene though, that made it worse.
JOKER: Just one bad animation...
I read the HQ and I confess that I was disappointed with the movie.
Half of the story is rambling, and when they follow the story of the HQ, they follow frame for frame. The story doesn't even innovate in anything.
I think this is a pretty good movie, despite the negative reviews, but of course the two storylines don’t go together at all. The first 30 minutes would’ve worked better if it was its own movie or short film.
The ending is pretty anticlimactic and BORING.

Such a great story and perfect for an animation and I must say being introduced into this world by Cat-woman was definitely a great move. Props to all of the voice actors for putting down such a great performance.

the scene with Batgirl and batman kissing each other I was like " dude....Bruce! what are you doing? Gordon is your friend and you fuck his daughter? " I wanna forget that ever happened.
on the joker's part of the movie . .. damn.
it was a good origin story ,but I feel like the joker's turning up in the joker that we know was a bit faster then I expected. not a very bad thing , it's not 2 hours movie ,but joker (2019 ) did a great job showing more of what the killing joke tried to accomplish. that's good .. after all this is a Batman movie and that one was joker's movie. anyway
i never Imagined joker to rape someone...and the fact that he tooked pictures.... ( I don't even know if he raped her or it's just what I understood )
and he freaking showed those pictures to Gordon.. that's I have no word for that ,but it's more then horrible. to see your kid naked and in pain because she was shot...

A lot of the screentime is irrelevant to the plot and just downright uncharacteristic of the characters :asterisk_symbol:cough:asterisk_symbol: Barbara and Bruce going at it :asterisk_symbol:cough:asterisk_symbol:. Everything in the story regarding Batgirl makes it painfully obvious it was written by a man, she has almost no personality outside of being batman’s sidekick and the commissioner’s daughter. Joker’s backstory is somewhat uninspired and it just didn’t feel right.
Not bad.. But the trend in adult themes is sickening. And the ending sucked.

Well this was a flat joke.
Batman: The Killing Joke is one of the best graphic novel ever written by Alan Moore. It's dark, haunting and really engaging. It took two iconic characters Batman/Joker and dissects the relationship between the two and how both of them tick. It's such an interesting storyline that was pulled off so magnificently. I'm not a comic book reader myself but I do consider the graphic novel to as brilliant. Word quickly spread that a movie adaption was on it's way and I sure was excited for it.

Tara Strong and Ray Wise are set to star. It's based on the most beloved graphic novel ever.

And then I saw the movie and I wasn't impressed. This was very disappointing since it had so much going for it, but somehow fell so short.
Barbara Gordon 30 minute prologue was by far the weakest part of the film. I know the creators wanted to add some character to her since didn't have that much in the comic. If so, It could have been so much better, because it added nothing to the movie and it did drag it down. I don't care about Barbara Gordon, I'm here to watch "The Killing Joke". At one point I was wondering when the actual film was going to start and it eventually dose. It would have been cool if we saw how the Joker broke out of Arkham, having extra scenes of Joker torturing Jim Gordon, or creating the death of Joker's wife that the book never showed, maybe even add a few more investigation scenes and conversations with Alfred. That would have easily covered the extra 30 minutes that was added.
Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill both are once again brilliant as the characters. Their voices are so iconic to the character's that nobody could top the brilliance of Hamill & Conroy. It's no surprise that both are the best parts of the movie.
The animation doesn't look that good and I can't be the only one that thinks that. How much better would it have been if the animation was visually striking and more effort was put into it. There are parts in this where I thought the animation was pretty damn good and also parts when the animation was pretty bad.
Now lets talk about the most controversial scene in the movie that involves Batman and Batgirl having sex. Yes, that actually happens in this movie and it dose nothing with the main plot. The sex between them had no real emotion to it and it's only thrown in there to get Batman angry when Barbara gets shot. The Batman and Batgirl sex scene was like a creepy fan fiction that some die-hard fan would write or draw to satisfy their fantasy.
Overall rating: Batman: The Killing Joke is basically a giant middle finger to the fans who loved Alan Moore's novel. I never really felt engaged in the story and the emotional impact that was in the graphic novel is nowhere here. It was rushed, dull and very flat. Fans and Alan Moore deserve better.
I expected so much more from this and I think everyone did.
The Joker parts where great. It's the fact the the first half of the movie is about Batgirl crushing over Batman. That has NOTHING to do with the Joker! It's like if we went to see a Superman movie and the first half of the movie was about Lexs assistant. Who the hell wants that. It's post to be a Joker movie and it's half a Batgirl movie. Of course people are going to feel ripped off. They could have done something crazy and, I don't know, MAKE MORE JOKER STUFF LOL!!! Luckily the new live action Joker movie on the way isn't going to do something that stupid. Imagine if they did, people would riot.
I don´t know the comics. Maybe that´s a good think because I enjoyed it.
I don't think too many comic book fans were looking for an animated adaptation of The Killing Joke and it works out about as good as it can considering how hard the material is to recreate. You can read the graphic novel quicker than you can finish the movie and its a way better ride. I don't think the Barbara Gordon intro story was that bad apart from the fact that it didn't need to be there and had no impact on the story that came after. Make sure you've read the comic first before you even consider this animated movie.
Well the first part is not too usefull, but the second part is very good. So this is not bad but I expected more.
Learning that Azarello had done the writing (I have a lot of confidence in him after his run on Hellblazer - not exactly my favorite run, but still pretty solid), and that Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill were reprising their roles as Batman and the Joker, I already knew I would likely be a good one. Still, I was afraid that they would fuck up the ending, which might be interpreted as being ambiguous in the comic by some. But the story in the beginning made it so it would work both ways, and still they left the ending the way it was in the comic.
I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I hadn't read the comic - this is the problem with the adaptation being faithful to the original material, but, overall, a decent effort.
Hence the rating - 8/10 "Great"

A little short. While the first part was about Batman and Batgirl stopping a spoiled rich guy and his thugs. Joker was basically just shoved in the second half.
Then we get a bunch of Joker flash backs where he was normal with a pregnant wife. Joker does some horrible things in current time. Batman wants revenge, Gordon says not kill Joker. Batman tries to befriend the Joker. The Joker tells Batman a joke, they both have a laugh. The End ?
Yeah those are big spoilers but those are all reasons why this movie was disappointing and didn't live up to the hype. While some have had a problem with Batgirl getting with Batman as well.
I found Batman giving in to a hot redhead on his lap kissing him more believable than him having a laugh with the Joker though.
The punchline is a little off, but overall this is an okay Batman flick with a surprisingly adult edge for an animated feature.
Batman fighting bad guys? Nope, batman and batgirl soap opera.
