Beetlejuice 1988

Keaton's best performance as he stated. Suites your lonely, sad, wanna-laugh days.

This is the first time I watched this movie and I quite understand the fuss about it. First thing I noticed though, was damn! Alec Baldwin was so gorgeous. lol.

Maybe it's just me but there's nothing special about this movie. There's nothing that stood out that made this movie great, maybe it held up better when it came out but the movie isn't hilarious nor scary I do like some of the concepts when it came to ghosts and some of the charcters were likable but nothing extraordinary when it came to this movie.

Probably hampered by the fact I did not grow up with this movie, seeing Beetlejuice for the first time today was a somewhat middling experience; very much the opposite of what I expected given this movies prestige. While it's excellent use of practical effects and physical comedy shouldn't go unnoticed, I can't shake the feeling that this movie didn't really do anything special or unique to warrant it's heralded status. Some gags fall flat, others try too hard and come off forced. The story is nonsensical and absurdist to the point of incoherency, but I'm gathering that's a virtue to most viewers of Burton's 80's and 90's films?
Just not for me, but I'm sure if I'd have been shown it in my formative years I'd possibly have had a different opinion/attachment like many seem to share online.

"Beetlejuice" is the first of Tim Burton's major movies to feature the Gothic horror look he is now famous for even if most of the time that Gothic look is the setting for some humorous escapades. Before this "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" scored pretty highly but I think it's pretty clear to see that "Beetlejuice" is what scored Burton the "Batman" gig. I really enjoy "Beetlejuice" because of the crazed performance of Michael Keaton in the title role. He talks fast and plays dirty. It's too bad he's not in the movie more as I think he logs about 15 minutes of screen time. The movie moves along pretty slowly between Keaton appearances but there are enough cool old school special effects to keep things interesting. Being a fan of stop-motion effects will make up for a lot of the slow parts. "Beetlejuice" isn't fall down funny but its got enough strangeness and wild Keaton antics to rate pretty highly with me.

I literally love this movie. And i know that Michael Keaton has not a lot of Screentime, but boy: When he is ther, he gives you a hell of a show.

And this setdesign is great -even to this day.

The overall tone of the movie is dark-ish but also uplifting. I loved it as a kid and had the best time rewatching it.

Divertido personaje que hace lo imaginable para que le convoquen y hacer de las suyas a humanos y a espititus.
Divertida, ironica y con el sello especial de Tim Burton

I had never seen it until now. I know it is like a classical film with all of Burton's greatness and maybe it is because all of what I knew that, even though I liked it, I kind of expected more. It is funny, it has great moments, but the closure of Beetlejuice was what I felt loose. I would watch it again, but it didn't become in a fav.

I loved this, but this is the first watch in decades.

It's...problematic. An old man creeping on a young teen girl doesn't feel so funny any more. Yes, he's supposed to be a creep, but it was just uncomfortable. Who knows how it'll go down in another ten years.

He’s the ghost with the most. Beetlejuice is fun and entertaining Tim Burton classic. In this most unusual haunted house story, a recently deceased couple seeks out the mischievous Beetlejuice in order to rid their house of its new owners. The film has a terrific cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, and Winona Ryder. Keaton and Ryder shine, delivering great performances that add a lot of charm and personality to the film. Additionally, Burton gives the film a unique and distinctive visual style, and Danny Elfman matches it with a wonderfully whimsical score. However, the effects and style of the film are quite dated and Burton’s vision gets a bit too surreal at times. But overall, Beetlejuice is a hauntingly fun and outrageously enjoyable romp.

Original and great fun. Despite some flaws. Like why can the dead couple not be heard in some scenes yet are heard while under sheets ? When in a previous scene the Guide Book of The Recently deceased said “the living can’t hear the dead ?”
Why disfigure themselves to make scary faces when they can’t be seen ? Which they already tried to scare the guests in a similar way earlier. How can they suddenly control everyone to dance when they didn’t have powers like that in previous scenes ?
Also Adam (Alec Baldwin) seems to have reading problems. I think he read Beetlejuice as being Beetleguise and Beetlejuice went by that name in some scenes to mess with Adam ?

I had seen bits and pieces of this movie over the years but never the whole thing until recently. I can't imagine what the fuss was about it - it is pretty average and uneventful. Michael Keeton does a good job playing some kind of character, but I don't think that I laughed once at anything he actually said. Not surprisingly, Catherine O'Hara was the best thing about this movie.

Back when I was young, Tim Burton used to make good films. I don’t know if it’s the nostalgia, but still enjoy this one.

One of my favourite constantly rewatched staples from childhood. So much fun. Shrunken waiting room head is a personal fave. A top 3 Keaton performance. 8.4

Fantastic comedy about ghosts that fail to scare.

I haven’t seen this movie since I was a kid and I forgot that a big part of Beetlejuice’s character is that he’s a pervert. Like they really lay it on thick that Beetlejuice is the biggest pervert, he’s even referred to as a pervert. I always wondered why they never remade this movie and I just imagine they’ve had countless boardroom meetings but couldn’t figure out how to take out the pervert part of Beetlejuice’s personality and they’ve given up. Also it really is fascinating how Beetlejuice is such a side character in his own movie, a true cinema classic featuring a pervert.

Tim Burton's second film already featured most of the recurring motifs of his gothic fairytales: the pure-hearted but eccentric misfit, ongoing parental conflicts, the "monsters" (in this case, the ghosts) being gentler than the wealthy and conventional human beings, the bubblegum horror aesthetics with unique color contrasts and campy visual effects, Danny Elfman's evocative score…

While the plot and writing could have been treated with far more care, Burton's visual sensibility gave birth to a whole new trend of campy but imaginative, undeniably stylish gothic cinema. The depiction of the afterlife with its quirky characters and creatures is a real feast for the eyes. The green screen scenes aged poorly, but the whole claymation work still looks impressive. Trickster ghost Betelgeuse is played by an over-the-top, almost unrecognizable Michael Keaton, but unfortunately, he doesn't get much screen time. It felt like they took too long to get to the point, but once Betelgeuse gets finally released the pacing improves drastically. It's not as polished as Burton's later productions, but still works as an entertaining old-school family film for Halloween.

"Let's turn on the juice and see what shakes loose."

What can I say... Michael Keaton is great at everything he does and the visuals of this film are fantastic. Even 3 decades later they still look great. I really hope they can bring the same level of energy and weirdness for the sequel.

A nugget of precise mayhem that never seems to get old. With Beetlejuice, Tim Burton and Danny Elfman's partnership is at or near its peak, delivering a perfect blend of wildly original visuals and unusually appropriate musical cues. They also get plenty of extra help from the cast. Mixing and matching bit players from dozens of sources, it's an ensemble piece without a true focal point. Even Michael Keaton's unrestrained performance as the film's devilish namesake can't claim center stage for long, due to constant pressure from Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder and a borderline-unrecognizable Alec Baldwin.

A genuinely hilarious script dances in awkward beauty from comedy to horror and back again, leaving plenty of room for scalding improvisation and keeping even the most tenured viewer guessing about what's around the next corner. I loved it growing up, when I didn't quite get every joke, and I adore it even more today.
