The film is brilliant, however some sex scenes are just awkward.. heads up don't watch with the parents :)
The 3h sit was a long one. Even though it wasn't the movie I was expecting it did not feel like a waste of time at all.
Even with a 3h film, there are still questions left to be answered. The movies maintains a slow pace overall, but fast forwards a few times to not make the movie too boring. This results in some characters getting rushed out of the story, and some not having much impact. The ending is implied as well, but I am very happy with it and wouldn't suggest changing it. It is most of all a coming of age story with some slice-of-life elements, and it is way too easy to fall for the clichés hiding in those genres. And they hardly did.
They could've sacrificed some unnecessary (long) scenes, but I doubt it would be the same film without them. It gives the movie a unique pace in which you don't really want them to hury up with the story, and just 'live in the now' with Adele (not particularly refering to the sex scenes.)
Besides the long and graphic sex scenes, which this movie will probably and sadly be most rememberd for, there are a multitude of shots and transitions that really hit me. The acting is of a very high quality too. They even threw in a lot of philosophy but were smart to make the main character not care for it (or understand it.) This prevents a pretentiousness without losing such material.
After all a very intriguing movie.
Extraordinaria y real.
OH MY GOD! Ça me perturbe. T'as tjrs des spaghettis...
The controversial lesbian love story that won Palme D'Or at Cannes. It was really hard to judge this movie. It was evident that there was some talent involved. It's well-shot and everything seems really realistic and natural, like when actors overlap each others sentences to make it seem more natural and it was cool to see the background conversations link up with the background characters lips.
Overall, it was filmed superbly. The characters were extremely real and relatable. And I was always able to think of them as the characters rather than the actors themselves. It does kinda bug me how much characters eat spaghetti in this movie. And I kinda feel like the gratuitous sex scenes could have been cut down a little. I mean i'm all for them and it did help me understand the extent of their relationship. But after a few minutes, I was seriously starting to understand why the actors came out and said the felt like prostitutes while filming this movie. It kinda crossed the line between making a movie and pretending to make a movie to watch to girls have sex on screen. The sex was convincing though! You definitely see vag to mouth contact. And to set things straight, I think it would have been excessive regardless of their gender. And if it was 2 guys, this movie would have never been released!
Another problem I have was to do with the filming of the club scenes. It's significantly easier to have your actors speak normally without music and then add the house music in post-production. However, in this movie they added the LOUD music but the actresses are whispering to each other in a club and are understanding each other perfectly. It takes all of the realism away from me. Also, I started to lack empathy for the main character at the end and I don't know if I was supposed to.
Overall, This movie has some great things going for it. And even though it does have features that might not work and I do have some criticisms about it, it is definitely recommendable.
Honestly, I'm not really sure what the hype was about. The movie dragged, the prolonged sex scenes were unnecessary, and like in many other LGBT/queer films the story ends in calamity. It romanticizes the all-too-common gay/lesbian tragedy theme we see over and over in queer films without so much as a strong representation of the gay community. Also, I'm not a fan of the bi-erasure and misogyny portrayed in this film. The only reason my scoring isn't any lower is because Seydoux and Exarchopoulos' acting were exceptional.
