Blue Velvet 1986

"Let's fuck! I'll fuck anything that moves! Baby wants to fuck! Baby wants to fuck Blue Velvet!"

Fucking
Hopper

The only man on the planet who could pull something like this off. A perfect mix of dark comedy and damn right creepy.

David Lynch's singular take on coming-of-age movies plays on the contrast of the sugar-coated idealized suburban town and the dark, twisted world that lies beneath. It's a film that is rich in metaphors and suggestive film noir-reminiscent shots, but at the same time rather poor and half-baked in terms of contents. The plot only vaguely elaborates on Jeffrey's fascination for Dorothy's world and the effect she has on him. Their sadomasochistic relationship gets just roughly sketched out, and there is no real consequence for what happens. Come on, it literally took one single phone call to forgive Jeffrey and have him reborn as the new hero. Isabella Rossellini was visually good for the role but her acting was unbearable.
The scenes with Frank and his gang were fairly entertaining, but overall the film lacks the edginess and transgressiveness that it needed. It might have been disturbing enough for conservative viewers in 1986, but feels a bit goofy now in 2020.
It's indeed an interesting work to take into examination inside Lynch's filmography as the same concept and atmosphere will be later reprised and revised in "Twin Peaks".

Who knows what this is all about. I mean, I know the plot (such as it is) but really? what is this even!

7.7/10 another great film from Lynch 3rd in the row after Mulholland and Lost Highway!

There are so many questions, and at the same time, so many answers, which seem to bring up more questions. Blue Velvet is a timeless film. I will happily get lost in this film from time and time again, it's absolutely remarkable.

Why is no one talking about how unbelievably weird this movie is?

This is literally one of the worst films I've ever had the displeasure to watch. In fact, it was practically unwatchable. The cinematography and direction were awful, the script appears to have been written by someone who doesn't speak English, b/c no one in the world speaks the way these characters spoke in this film, the acting was downright terrible (Kyle MacLachlan is not a good actor, and Dennis Hopper is about as menacing as a declawed kitten), the story is ungodly boring, and the special effects, such that they were, look like a fourth grader's attempt at becoming involved in filmmaking. If I live to be 1000-years-old, I will never understand people's affection for David Lynch.

Part of this is a boring mystery movie, the other part is Dennis Hopper intentionally being funny, and the rest is trash enough to be incredibly funny. A must watch for anyone who wants to edge their lynchmaxxing streak

It mixes youth comedy with the fantastic world of David Lynch.

I don’t think it needed to go that over the top with some of the performances, but besides that I think this works on every level. The visuals, music and pacing of this film have aged incredibly well, I get what it’s going for thematically and it manages to thrill on a level few filmmakers can. It also seems like a good starting point for the Lynch catalogue if you ask me, it’s one of his more accessible films. Almost feels like it’s directed by a perverted Hitchcock.

8.5/10

I admire David Lynch for two reasons.

(1), he almost single-handedly created "Eraserhead," a film that turned my concept of cinema on its head.
(2), he pioneered the genre of surrealist horror.

However, "Blue Velvet" contains neither of these elements. It is a boring film. Even Dennis Hopper's performance, which was well received, was boring to me. Too bad.

One of the best mystery movies I have ever seen. Watching this movie, you can't doubt - or so I think - that Lynch was influenced by Kubrick's The Shining: The surreal pastel colors notorious in Dorothy Vallens' room, the room where the child is being held, Detective Tom Gordon's yellow suit ... The symmetrical planes and frontal perspectives that Kubrick abused throughout the career and that proved to be useful for creating tension due to the feeling of unreality they generate… In short, a masterpiece, above Eyes Wide Shut also by Kubrick.

This is a movie written/directed by David Lynch and starring Dennis Hopper and a very young Kyle MacLachlan. I really, really enjoyed this film. Lynch did an amazing job of displaying bizarre s**ual behavior with the backdrop of the innocent 1950's. Dennis Hopper was simply amazing - quite possibly his best role.

one of the better lynch movies.

What a weird movie but it had me hooked to see what was going to happen next. Dennis Hopper is crazy and Laura Dern is the best.
