Braindead 1992

SPOILERS

Zombie sex. Strange. Over the top. Funny at times. Overly long last scene.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I watched Peter Jackson's 1992 film Braindead, or Dead Alive as it was known outside of New Zealand. It starts with a zoologist capturing a Sumatran rat-monkey hybrid out of Skull Island. I'm glad I didn't miss the title card announcing it takes place in 1957 as it helps explain how the characters don't question what they're seeing more. I found the scene with the zoologist explaining to the local tribes that he has a treaty which to them was a piece of paper, only to have to bring out a machine gun to make his point. The beginning sets the stage that the ride is going to be a little silly. Once the zombie portion starts Braindead gets really gory, but it's competently made. The hijinks are top-notch. It's just a charming and delightful film.

Still the unsurpassed king of splatstick comedies. Not a single drop of that fake blood has gone wasted! The proof that with passion and creativity you can achieve anything.

Rewatched it today and my opinion remained the same about it. It's highly controversial movie, because one of the most trashiest film I've ever seen on the outside, very gruesome and disgusting at many points, but I still don't feel it as a disadvantage and I don't berate it for that, becasue Braindead is simply a pure fun thanks to its slapstick elements. It didn't want to be more what it really is, which tends to be a lame excuse but sometimes it's suffiecent, becasue the audience doesn't always want watch about serious events and topics on screen.
I also think in a very subtle way, but carries a message that a 20-something guy cannot stay with his mother for all eternity. He needs to conquer his angst and finally live his life. That ending scene clearly reminded me for this weird coming of age feeling when the timorous Lionel stood up against his mother once and for all, which concluded that he was reborn and his new life commenced with Paquita.

This movie has insane visuals, hard to believe it's 30 years ago. Such a comedic masterpiece. But sadly full of gore, blood, and gross stuff. Normally, I have no issue with bloody graphics. But this movie almost made me throw up. In my opinion, it's too much. Anyway, of course, the movie itself is fantastic, especially if you're drunk:beer:

(Japanese Laserdisc Version, 104 mins)

"This calls for divine intervention... I kick ass for the lord!"

B-movie horror comedy gore fest! A mix of mostly dumb slapstick humor and highly gross comedic moments. Feels like it's trying too hard at times though but it still managed to get a few solid laughs out of me. The character interactions and dialogue are unnatural and not very fluid. The practical effects look great but the gore isn't realistic at all, limbs tear apart like pudding and fountains of liquids come out of the bodies—but it adds to the slapstick humor. Every zombie had something fun and unique about them.

First two acts felt like a slowburn in comparison to the third act, which is where this movie is transformed into something gore-tastic. Blown away! So much fun, blood, gore and pretty creative with that too. 30 minutes of non-stop madness. It's Evil Dead II meets Night of the Living Dead. Definitely one of my favorite horror third acts, ever!

Father McGruder kicking ass in the cemetary was peak cinema!

I’m sucker for practical effects and this film is loaded with them. It’s an over the top amount of mayhem and gore with some laughs thrown in for good measure. Some of the plot could have been improved but overall a fun film.

Usually I enjoy horror comedies and lots of gore, but I just couldn't handle this. I don't know if it was just too over the top for me or what...but I just found myself consistently asking "is it over yet?". And that zombie baby has to have the most annoying laugh I have ever heard in my entire life. I wanted to like this...I really did.

One of the worst movies I know! I have absolutely no idea how this rubbish can be hailed as a horror classic, because everything about it is so silly: the plot is laughable, the characters and actors a joke, the SFX really, really bad and there isn't a single scary moment because everything is so very predictable! DO NOT WATCH THIS, there are so many good horror flicks out there, but Braindead for sure isn't one of them.
