Brave 2012

Poorly paced plot, but still somewhat enjoyable

Unbelievably amazing animation coupled with fantastic voice work and beautiful music.

As others have said, however, the story is a bit lacking compared to what we've come to expect from Pixar. I felt the ability to create an incredible, Pixar-esque story wasn't taken advantage of, which is a shame because the setup had a ton of potential.

Still, it's Pixar, so you have to watch it. :)

Amazing animation, voice acting and music. I fell in love with this movie immediately, and found myself laughing many times. Can't say there was a single character I disliked. One of the most notable aspects of this movie is that, unlike other Disney princesses, Merida's story does not revolve around a romance. She does not find a prince and that's just fine.

My only complaint is at points the story seemed a bit insubstantial. I felt like I could've gotten more at the end of the film. And the whole "witch grants a wish/spell that is not what you expected" part seemed a bit old hat. Been there, done that. Other than those two things, however, it was quite a good film.

A warm, cozy fairy tale that feels more like a Disney production than the latest entry in Pixar's storybook. It's sweet, quirky and funny, but routinely falls back on familiar motifs and often seems criminally under-explored. Since the vast majority of the action takes place in and around a single locale, there's a claustrophobic quality in the air that never truly dissipates, robbing us of the grand scale that's been present in every one of the animation factory's preceding works.

It's no more than a straightforward telling of a reasonably interesting fable, with only a few short jolts of the unique character and timely laughs I've come to expect from the troupe. Of course, there's no arguing the fact that Pixar knows how to produce gorgeous scenery, and Brave is yet another leap forward in that regard; the surrounding landscapes are unanimously breathtaking, and Princess Merida's hair is constantly bouncy and lifelike, truly a character unto itself. It's an enjoyable fresh ride and a marked improvement over the lifeless Cars 2, but misses the depth and flair that made me fall so deeply in love with the studio's classics.

The animation is fantastic, however I thought the story-line could of been a bit better (still entertaining though, especially for children). My only major problem with the story was how it portrayed men. I love the film for its strong, tenacious, and nonconforming female characters, but it's unfortunate that they have to be juxtaposed to the crude, thoughtless male characters. Why can't both genders be strong, one complimenting the other instead of one controlling and/or saving the other either through brain or muscle?

this movie just pisses me off

Once again Pixar delivers a mediocre film that’s all style and no substance. Brave tells the tale of a young rebellious teenage girl who seeks to change her fate, but her wish carries unforeseen consequences. The story couldn’t be more formulaic or the characters less authentic. And while the film looks spectacular and hits all the right beats, it all feels contrived and superficial. What makes Brave so disappointing is that it lacks the sincerity that normally transcends Pixar films, and instead delivers a commercial piece of tripe.

The hair animation looks great but everything else about this movie is meh.

For the first half of the film, this is classic Pixar - beautiful imagery, 3D that actually feels immersive and a plethora of characters, both primary and secondary, that are funny, warm and worth spending time with. Unfortunately, the magical plot twist at the centre of the film and the story that follows is probably its weakest aspect. It's certainly not a bad story - the characters that Pixar have created are strong enough to hold your interest anyway - but this is territory that has been well trodden before, by Disney themselves. Perhaps Pixar are held to a higher standard than other animation companies, as this feels beneath them, but they have set the standard for so long. So not quite 5-star Pixar, but certainly an entertaining return to form after Cars 2.

Overall a fairly entertaining movie with great CGI. But... it just isn't Pixar. :( Somehow it's missing something that all previous Pixar films have had. I think it is mostly the story.

Beautiful animation. (As always from Pixar) Check!!
Great voices and music. Check!!!
Great fun. Well, I suppose. Check!
Great story. Not so much...

I don't know what to say. On one side it's technically brilliant...on the other...rather lacking in the story compartment. Kids will love it of course, but more for the colors and the sound mix than the story...

I hope they will do better next time. But by all means...Brave is watchable if you just want to entertain the spawn.

Not the best Pixar movie but still amazing :)

What a unique film! Pixar don't usually do films about humans, they've done: toys, bugs, robots etc, and this was a princess film! It is so different and I love seeing the ancient Scottish culture come into it too. Merida is a great role model for young girls, she feels she doesn't need a man and is (as the title says) Brave! It's actually also really funny too

what a surprise. people do not like too much. i see quality story and enjoy it.very smooth and not too complicated.

Finally there is a Disney Princess that does not rely on a man. Power to the women!

A visual feast and a solid Pixar film.

Again a beautiful Pixar movie

My sister said the movie isnt all that great, and im starting to believe her.

Gorgeous scenery, beautiful animation, and wonderful voice casting. Enjoyable to watch yet the story seemed somewhat lacking from what we expect from the Pixar studios.

loading replies

Beautifully imperfect. Disney is evolving and the effects are simply wonderful. I love everything about Merida - from her rough, take no prisoners personality, to her desperately wild hair. A must see for children and adults alike.

loading replies

mérida just wanted to do hot girl highland shit and i think that's beautiful

loading replies

Not my favourite Pixar movie, but still very much enjoyable.

This made me cry like a little bitch, and I guess I wasn't exactly prepared for that at all. I know it's Pixar and all - but I guess it felt a little personal to me. That's what I get for being that person who doesnt watch trailers. The scottish theme is just something I really appreciated seeing from Pixar. The voice acting was top notch on top of that.

The animation is beautiful - loved the little brothers, they made me laugh. I do wish people would explain what it is they dislike so much about this film if they are going to leave reviews, instead of just "it wasn't good"
"There have been better"
"It's not up to Pixar's standards"

Just like... Can you explain a little further please. It is a review site. Not just a place to say you dont like something

Not one of Disney's best animation films. The story seemed promising at the beginning about a young Scottish princess who is rebellious against her family's traditions as she is due to get arranged married in order to keep the pact/peace between clans. But the whole middle party of the story and conflict resolution was odd before it reached a happily ending up the rebellious princess and mother changing the traditions and keeping the peace, all while mending their relationship. Like many other Disney stories, there was a witch and spells were cast, but the whole thing about the mother becoming a bear was odd and consumed the story a bit too much. There was also no magical Disney music other than two outside songs. Not a bad film, just something any other animation company could throw together. Not Disney quality.

I just rewatched this. What an incredibly beautiful and timeless movie! It's my favorite Pixar movie and Merida is my favorite Disney princess (at least I think so, there are so many great ones that it's hard to tell).

The visuals are stunningly beautiful. Sure, the CGI has aged a bit, but it doesn't matter much as it's an artistic art style that is still beautiful. I especially like the designs of the characters, animations, and beautiful particle effects.

The story is incredible as well. I can really relate to some aspects and it mixes love, action, comedy, and many other aspects so well.

And last but not least the music and soundtrack are amazing. I also really love the Scottish accents. Especially Kelly Mcdonald has such a lovely accent and I hope that I can hear it in more movies and TV shows (there is e.g. one Black Mirror episode).

The name Macintosh was also funny btw.

The fact that THIS beat Wreck it Ralph at the Oscars just goes to show how rigged it is.

This one took me by surprise. Not as deep and insightful as Inside Out or Soul, but very enjoyable and gave me quite some laughs. Much better than expected.

A wholehearted animated film from Disney.

'Brave' is very good. The Scottish vibes help a lot, but the meaningful message and superb animation are just a few of the film's other big positives. The casting, characters and music are some too. The premise itself isn't anything breathtakingly new, but is most certainly enjoyable to see unfold.

The cast are excellent, with my personal standouts being Kelly Macdonald (Merida) and Emma Thompson (Elinor). There are also good performances from Billy Connolly (Fergus), Robbie Coltrane (Dingwall) and Julie Walters (Witch).

It's a fun and simple watch, one I thoroughly felt entertained by.

loading replies

The second the movie falls apart is when the mother turns into a bear.

First half okay, second half garbage.

loading replies

Good movie but Wreck it Ralph was robbed of Best Animated Film. Was much better with more of a story. Brave is just beautiful to look at mostly.

loading replies

Predictable but highly enjoyable. Loved the scottish accents, the theme and the setting.

I really enjoyed the first half hour but then it was just "meh". I was expecting something a little different.

Extremely cliche and predictable story, but all of the other elements (acting, writing, animation, art direction, e.c.t.) fall together exceptionally well, as per usual with Pixar. A generic story, but told with great talent. Though, on second thought, even though adults may have seen this kind of story told over and over again, kids might not have so much, so I think that adults might like this movie, but that kids will probably like it a lot more.

I was anticipating this more than any other Pixar movie in years, and I haven't liked much of Pixar's work since "Finding Nemo." But it was very good. The visuals are quite remarkable with lots of lush details that bring the world to life, even with the cartoony design of the characters. It definitely skews to an older crowd and really isn't a film for young children, which may throw some people off. It also has some pacing problems, and the plot has a lot of herky-jerky movement that can give the audience whiplash. Still, it's one of Pixar's better films.

Well, the animation and the hair was pretty well done, but the story sucked hard. This looks more like a demonstration of skills the people of Pixar have. The movie itself was bad.

Pixar can't disappoint. Another great movie.
