An enjoyable and inspiring comedy drama. Almost made me get off the sofa and go for a run. I say almost, because I decided to eat a packet of Quavers and play video games afterwards instead.
Dang. That was a good time. I had such low expectations. The trailer was boring in spite of the fact that it features an actress I enjoy. I wasn't seeing advertising for it when I saw it in theatres so i skipped it. Now however it's getting featured status so I figured I'd give it a shot. I was bloody impressed. I thought it would be a cheesy film about a girl losing weight by doing a marathon. But I like everyone so much. Brittany was so heartfelt.
This is the second movie based on a real person I've seen this year (Blinded by the Light) and both times I'm not sure I knew it was based on a real person. They both managed to impress me. It's just a lovely thing both movies. I also liked the supporting cast. They really filled out the world and her relationships even though as a character Brittany tends to shut people out I really kept rooting for her to eventually let them in. Even Catherine who is an on and off character managed to endear herself. There's heartache and heartbreak as a viewer watching Brittany go through her ups and downs. Highly recommend everyone check this out if you can.
Y'all love everything fat...Santa...chubby kittens...burritos...can us fat people get some love too sheeeeit lol
Suffers from far too many plotlines and throwaway tangents during its meandering middle, but that doesn’t stop Brittany from being a funny yet nuanced comedy drama with a positive message. Not bad at all.
I didn't make much of it. I thought it was very sweet, cute, and worth watching. But that's it. Nevertheless my partner loved it. I always feel something special when I know the person who is watching the movie with me enjoyed the movie so much. That gives the overall experencie extra points.
Jillian Bell was so good in this film, portraying a woman who heard the daily putdowns and insensitive and passive-aggressive comments, the insidiousness of which fed her self-defeating behaviors, and turned her life around by taking the next right action and realizing that it was actually good to ask for help, and let those who care about you in.
What makes it so nice is that it is light-hearted, but also incredibly relatable. And a good reminder that everyone has problems, and it's easy to forget that when you are too focused on your own.
"I’m not going to be your fat sidekick anymore."
As someone who use to be an athlete and ran a lot, this movie hit a few spots for me. I was worried it was going to be a comedy about being overweight and have some Amy Schumer style jokes, but it was different than that! I laughed, I related, I got sad, then got inspired.
Oh, and it is based on a true story.
[Amazon] It is an enjoyable movie but not too inspired. It tries to avoid stereotypes, but it sends an ambiguous message around overweight people (an unhappy background always hides under the apparent happiness). It is less comedy than what they sell us. And in some moments it seems that it will be less predictable than it is. But the proposal is not intended to take risks.
I was hoping this would be a running movie, but turned out to be more of a personal journey that features running as a vehicle. It’s pretty standard and formulaic “getting thin and then everything changing for the better” Hollywood movie, the kind of film in which overweight people don’t even wash and brush their hair. By the way, the fat suit in the beginning was so cheap and very obviously a fat suit.
The plot has been done before and will be done again. It’s not terrible by any means but there isn’t much else remarkable about the movie. Brittany Runs a Marathon is very real though, for example, once the main character starts running, she becomes really annoying about it. The only thing more boring than listening to your coworkers talk about running a marathon would be a movie about somebody who is running a marathon.
I guess I was supposed to root for Brittany, but I didn't understand why the writers decided to make her so mean, rude, unlikable, cringe-worthy and unsympathetic. The movie gave her free roam to be terrible to every single person in her life with limited consequences. Brittany is a 14 year old trapped in the body of a 28 year old, she blames her life outcomes and actions on other people, when there is no one to blame but herself. She was not even offensive, just blatantly absurd and a horrible person. She clearly needed more than to lose weight. And at the end I didn’t feel she was redeemed (nothing about her was redeemable), maybe that was the point and I missed it but she was very unpleasant. I couldn't relate to her journey at all.
No real climax. The “twist” was she hurt her leg so she had to go to next year’s marathon instead. I didn't feel any emotion about it and just waited to see how long it would take for her to overcome it and the obvious ending to play out.
This was a really nice feel good movie about a woman during a time in her life who needs some improvements and motivation. The fact that everyone has been there in some form or another makes it highly relatable. A movie that shows if you believe ... than anything is possible especially being good to yourself. A great watch.
I enjoyed it, I couldn't relate to the story, it's too "American" for me, but I think it's fine.

I enjoyed this and really related to it as a 28 year old who has been trying to lose weight. Jillian Bell was great. The story is uplifting and motivating.
