Captain America: The First Avenger is a relic in its old fashion style but a little messy when it comes to the editing of the action scenes, but it's still enjoyable. Marvel Studios and Joe Johnston really beats the awful 1990s version. The action could have been better but their flaws can be ignored. It's fun enough as a superhero movie.

Seeing it for the second time and having seen every Marvel movie (with the exception of the latest Spiderman) since, I appreciate it more. It is so much more pure then the ones that came after that. And it is not suffocated by CGI. So I change my rating from 7 to 8.
[7.0/10] It’s hard to disaggregate Captain America: The First Avenger from the scores of projects (frankly, better projects) that followed in its wake. The MCU was barely off the ground in 2011, and The Avengers was still a big gamble and nearly a year away from its enormous debut. It’s hard to watch Cap’s first outing free from the context of seeing it as the introduction of Agent Carter, the establishment of Bucky, the first appearance of Hydra, and scores of other little details, big and small, that would come to give texture and form to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And yet, if you evaluate it as a standalone film it’s...a pretty standard late 2000s/early 2010s superhero flick. It gains some juice from the period setting, and it has a murderer’s row of character actors to liven things up. But apart from that cinematic universe firmament, Captain America 1 is a perfectly fine but hardly overwhelming initial outing for the character, which has more in common tonally with the X-Men movies than with the later MCU films.
The film is surprisingly episodic, which perhaps makes sense for a superhero origin story. The movie feels less like one complete story than it does a series of vignettes from Steve’s life up until the point he was frozen. There’s his time as a wannabe pipsqueak eventually chosen to become America’s first supersoldier. There’s his interlude as a war bonds mascot. There’s his secret escapade to rescue his best friend. There’s a montage of his adventures with the Howling Commandos. And there’s a final effort to take out Red Skull that leads to Steve’s big sacrifice.
These various events don’t so much feed into one another as they just so happen to occur in sequence. There’s little sense of cause and effect connecting them. Instead, the film seems content to trace the various adventures of Steve Rogers, at times pausing to move the various pieces into place for tidbits familiar to comic book fans or set up his unfreezing in the future. In that way, the film is creaky in places, seeming more a collection of checked boxes for the canonical origin story of the character and his corner of the Marvel Universe, along with a smattering of cross-movie connections.
But a few things do provide a throughline for the film, and even boost it into something occasionally quite memorable. The major throughline is Steve himself. Captain America doesn’t have much of an arc here, or if he does, it’s largely over halfway through the movie. He’s more or less the same person he was at the end of the film as he was in the beginning. Only, after the first act, he has a body to match his heart and his will.
That is, however, kind of the point. The First Avenger quickly establishes a few key details about Steve: that he never gives up, that he has a will to help stop bullies in any form, and that he’s willing to sacrifice himself to save others. It’s those qualities that provide what Dr. Erskine is looking for when he wants Steve to be his test subject for the super soldier serum. The serum magnifies not only strength and ability, but who a person is, a fact which makes Steve ideal for the program, regardless of whether he’s “still skinny.” He knows what it’s like to be powerless, which means he’ll treat power as a gift, something to be appreciated and used for greater good, rather than taken for granted.
It’s a little cheesy, but Stanley Tucci sells the hell out of the idea and makes a big impression in a short amount of screentime. He’s just one of the stellar character actors the movie brings aboard to help breathe some life into a semi-typical hero origin tale. Tucci’s iconoclastic earnestness comes through in Dr. Erskine. Tommy Lee Jones is hilarious as Steve’s sharp-witted and sharp-tongued commanding officer. Hugo Weaving and Toby Jones chew scenery with aplomb as the bad guys. And even bit parts for Dominic Chase as Howard Stark create something memorable.
This is all especially good, because Chris Evans is pretty flat as Rogers. He would go on to become a strength of the MCU, finding a way to convey that inner goodness of the character without being boring. But here, he’s basically a blank slate for milquetoast platitudes. Even Hayley Atwell, who’s more than proven herself as a charismatic actress, sees her light obscured given her prominent yet underwritten role, even if she still manages to shine in a few choice moments. The center of the piece isn’t strong enough to carry it yet, which means a superb cast has to pick up the rest of the slack.
The casting livens up some quick-hit stops through the various phases of Steve’s life. None of these little miniature episodes are bad exactly, but they don’t fit together and play as somewhat generic. Indifferent and/or unconvincing action sequences are dutifully sprinkled in, and the various comic book canon necessities, like the Howling Commandos, are dropped in without really being established or developed. The First Avenger tries to cram all of these random bits and pieces together because the inevitable time jump, and it makes the whole thing feel scattered in places.
Still, there’s something compelling about watching those three essential qualities in Steve emerge and blossom once he has the might to go along with his desire. He still never stops fighting, whether he’s going against local brutes in an alley or a power mad Nazi lieutenant. He still stands up to bullies, whether they’re shouting at a movie theater or propping up the Axis powers. And he’s still willing to make the sacrifice play, whether he’s a pipsqueak falling on a grenade or a literal posterboy taking down a dangerous enemy ship lest it reach his hometown.
The rendition of this is more solid than sparkling. But it lays the groundwork for the character and his animating impulses in a way that creates room to grow. His relationship with Peggy isn’t the deepest or the most explored, but it’s sketched just enough for us to understand their connection. His loss of Bucky isn’t fully examined, but we see enough of his reaction and understanding of his friend’s choice to appreciate his. And the character isn’t exactly the most memorable out of the gate, but the core parts of his personality and M.O. find their way onto the screen, ready to be fleshed out and challenged by later stories and events.
If the MCU had puttered out and all we got were these first few movies, Captain America: The First Avenger would likely have been a footnote, held dear by few beyond dedicated superhero fans. But as one of the major roots of the interconnected storytelling universe of the MCU, there’s enough for fans of later work to appreciate in the film as a shaky, but important first step.
The most I like Agent Carter! The film is such a typical popcorn entertainment.
Captain America is one of the trickiest superheroes to adapt in modern times. His origin story as a cheesy national propaganda mascot in this movie was actually pretty solid, but once he turns into an actual superhero it just turns into another subpar action flick. The plot is not compelling enough to make it worthwhile as a story-driven film, and the action sequences are dull to say the least.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the ridiculous CGI backgrounds that make the whole movie look like a cheap-ass music video. Maybe it's supposed to be watched with 3D glasses?
Old-fashioned in the best possible way.
Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving do a great job as the Captain and Red Skull. The casting is damn near perfect. The movie looks fantastic and the story feels appropriately ripped right out of a comic book. This movie accurately portrays Captain America as a patriotic hero and his origin story brings out his incredible bravery even as a mere mortal.

Captain America is one of my favorite MCU characters, and I was really looking forward to his origin story back in 2011...and it didn't disappoint.
I loved it back then, and I still love it now. When it comes to the origin story, it might even be better than Iron Man. The story is engaging and exciting. The effects are good, and the actors do a very good job. Chris Evans as Captain America was a good choice, and Hayley Atwell as Carter was genius.
Anyway...I'm not going to bore you with more of my ramblings. I'm just going to tell you that out of the first 5 MCU movies...this is...IMO of course...the best.

The Good:
The WWII era setting not only makes this superhero film unique among its peers, it also stands out within the MCU by being a mix of science fiction and a wartime thriller.
Marvel Studios has perfected their casting by now. Chris Evans is such a natural choice to play Steve Rogers that I couldn’t imagine anyone else pulling it off. The supporting cast is riddled with great names; from the wonderfully stereotypical German bad guy General Hugo Weaving to the mysterious German scientist Stanley Tucci and the gruffly American colonel Tommy Lee Jones.
Hayley Atwell is killing it as the badass Peggy Carter, a character who deserves a solo film.
Director Joe Johnston expertly manages to make this film feel like a modern superhero flick, despite the historical setting. Believable science, car chases and action sequences keep the spirits high.
A lesser actor wouldn't be able to pull off the overblown qualities of the Red Skull, but Hugo Weaving fits the role perfectly and embraces the comical aspects of the character with full force.
The script cleverly taps into Captain America's real-life role as an icon for the US war effort at the time as well as Germany's reported obsession with finding supernatural and possibly alien technologies to win the war.
The pacing is pretty good. The story allows each act to play out properly before moving gout to next and the villains are used evenly throughout. Steve’s journey from zero to hero feels natural and well developed.
The Bad:
This film largely feels like the first typical MCU film, following a pattern most films will follow from this film onwards. Having seen the later films before this one, Captain America feels unoriginal and less inventive than other MCU entries.
Generic action sequences and a generic, straightforward plot could have been pulled from a plethora of other superhero movies (or war movies or spy movies).
In retrospect, while there is little inherently bad with this film, it's just not as inventive, exciting or interesting as some later entries, and therefore feels very safely middle-of-the-road.
The Ugly:
Skinny Chris Evans before turning into the postmodern sex icon we all know and love.

Easily the most faithful interpretation of the character ever to grace the screen, although it admittedly doesn't have much in the way of competition. Cap's is a story that's terribly tricky to translate from the printed page without slipping into an ocean of cheese somewhere along the way, and though this latest attempt does lose its footing from time to time, it always seems to recover with grace and dignity.
It's more a living, breathing comic book than any of Marvel's big screen properties to make the leap thus far, with motorcycle chases, laser beams, crisply uniformed enemy forces and pseudo-iconic freeze frames around every corner. Chris Evans lives his role as the star-spangled Avenger, the white bread everyman with an unnervingly positive disposition, Hugo Weaving clearly relishes his chance to play the thoroughly evil, black leather-clad Red Skull and Tommy Lee Jones enjoys more than just a cameo as the brilliantly-cast drill sergeant in charge of the whole operation.
Though I had hoped for a more honest depiction of the period, as I think a genuine WW2 setting is when the Captain is truly in his element, it's tough to maintain that perspective when bright blue lights are firing from the enemy's hands throughout the picture. This is a solid effort, at least as good as I was hoping it would be, but not the heralding triumph it had the potential to become. Smack in the middle of summer blockbuster season was the right time and place for its debut.

Another perfectly serviceable superhero movie. Has a good amount of backstory for Cap and seeing him all small and scrawny made me laugh a little. The WWII setting is a lot different than most other superhero movies so that is nice to see. Peggy Carter is one of the few women leads who has something to do and Hayley Atwell is great. Some of the CGI backgrounds and effects look pretty bad. Red Skull is kind of a one note villain but I like Hugo Weaving. Lastly I know Marvel likes teasing the next movie after the credits but putting basically a trailer and date? That seems super weird.

Captain America: The First Avenger is a great solid origin story. When it came to Marvel superheroes I never really cared for Captain America; Iron Man and Thor were my top favorite of the Marvel roster. With that said I have to admit that this film was very entertaining and enjoyable. The story line was great with some action thrown in -- but not a whole lot, and Chris Evans and the rest of the cast were awesome. This film was a great addition to the new Marvel Cinematic Universe that Marvel is creating.
This movie gets better everytime you know more about later Steve Rogers.
[Pre-Endgame MCU Rewatch] As a whole this is a pretty decent movie, Steve Rogers' pre-super serum days are great, the Howard Stark Expo is a nice and fun addition, and initial post-super serum Steve is hilarious. He punched Hitler in the face 200 times! Once he finally gets to see real action I feel it loses a bit of fun but it's still decent.
Both Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving are excellent in this film and I expected nothing less from them. Agent Carter is a great character and if you like her I definitely recommend watching the Agent Carter series.

I thought the ending was pretty weak, but overall, it's a pretty good entry into the MCU.
It's a movie that made me admire Steve Rogers and made me appreciate how they showed his principles even after he became Captain America. However, I was indifferent seeing all those fights, It was clear to me that I didn't need to fear for him because he wouldn't be facing nothing he couldn't handle.

It wasn't bad. They did seem to spend a very long time developing the background of the character and when we were 1h20m in I was wondering how much longer the film would drag on for, but it got a bit better and wasn't quite a cliché. However, during the fight montage scene, I couldn't help but be reminded of the Team America 'you need a montage' song.
I enjoyed it, that's for sure! A couple years ago this would have been a perfect superhero movie. Now, after Batman, Iron Man and the likes, it's just another decent entry into this genre. Very entertaining, but not really standing out. Looking forward to sequels and the tying up of characters in The Avengers!
I was ok with the movie mostly being backstory, I kept thinking the sequel will have more action! Then they start to kill him off in the end, and I was pretty pissed by so much backstory.
Too much time was spent building up the back story... Action was very limited in some stretches... So much so that I fell asleep and had to rewatch the last half of the movie. Overall, it wasn't bad, but definitely not one of my favorites, especially in this genre.

Film 138 (Goal: 300) of 2024:
Just like the previous film, Thor, I seem to be in the minority when I say this is an excellent film. Maybe 4 is generous and that it's more likely a 3.5 but everything just works for me here. With Joe Johnston applying the pulping feel of The Rocketeer to the early days of the Captain America mythos. The first act is fantastic, from learning who Steve Rogers is, to the unveiling of Rogers post-Super Soldier serum. Chris Evans is such a fantastic casting, in a role he would come to define for a decade.
Perhaps Act 2 slows things down a little. The film relies a little on a montage that feels overly CGI heavy and it lacks a big finish but it's the characters that really make this work for me. Particularly the relationship between Evans' Rogers and Atwell's Carter, which would be a centerpiece of the Infinity Saga, all the way to the end. I also really enjoyed the brief relationship between Rogers and Erskine (played by Stanley Tucci). Weaving is as always a great villain in The Red Skull. The script let's him down at times. We see his menace, and understand his desires but I don't think the film really shows the potential repercussions of his threats.
That aside, I really enjoyed Captain America: The First Avenger. It's a film that gets overlooked among some of the bigger and better films in the MCU, including the two beloved Captain America sequels that follow this. But it slots really well between Thor and The Avengers for me, and is a perfect launching pad for Chris Evans' Captain America, which would come to be a defining character for the next decade to come.
I actually enjoyed this more than I did when I first saw it in 2011. Always thought I hated it, but it's actually one of the better MCU films. Go figure.
Definitely not the worst marvel movie but its up there. Although, I got to admit, the captain america trilogy is probably my favourite. Those running scenes are just iconic.

The formation of Captain America during the WWII in the confrontation with the Hydra, whose ubersoldiers resemble imperial stormtroopers, and the action itself is the mission of Wolfenstein. I think this is the best film of the MCU. We dive inside a character seeing his motivation, his struggling and his growth. We don't have fantastic tecnologies spawning at random and no easy super-solution for super-problem.

I love it because it feels like a Captain America movie, thats what stood out to me when it came out and I still love that about it today.
A good movie of origin with Iron Man, the best ones, and also a good war movie. I just missed the Red Skull not have been beaten, it just "disappeared" in space.

'Captain America: The First Avenger' is thoroughly entertaining. I absolutely enjoyed the story and how it is told, while the 1940s style is done fantastically - love the settings and costumes. The only negative I have is about the body double effect of skinny Captain America - which looks, honestly, ridiculous... in an amusing way, at least.
This is, possibly, the most I've enjoyed the overall cast for an MCU film so far. Chris Evans is fun to watch in the lead role, he does a grand job. Behind him, the likes of Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell and Hugo Weaving are enjoyable too.

This is the perfect setup movie, Chris Evans (Captain America), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Hugo Weaving (Red Skull), Sebastian Stan (Bucky) and Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark) are perfect in this film and Captain America has never been one of my favourite characters but his portrayal of this character is perfect and even injects a lot of likeability into the character. The build-up in this film is great and though some of the action can be really brief, they are fun and perfectly put together.
The movie set up perfectly for The Avengers as this was the last character that needed to be set up and they do it masterfully, but the one negative I have is how brief Red Skull is in this film as he has so few scenes and when he is on camera he is perfect. It is the perfect start to the perfect trilogy in my opinion.
Good start for this character, important to know his relationship with Bucky and Peggy Carter. The problem is that the 2 are so good, that minimizes it
[MCU Rewatch Review]
A wonderful start to the Infinity Stones saga. Don't understand all the hate on the movie. Kinda love the Cap's origin and all the philosophy present in this movie. Peggy's great as well. One of my favorite movies.
Just before a rattled Hugo Weaving tears his own face off to reveal the Red Skull, he reminds me of Niles Crane when he mimed that wordless scene with the iron, scissors and burning sofa :joy::joy:

Captain America: The First Avenger feels as though it has taken the framework of a more conventional war drama and just thrown in some superhero stuff and I don’t necessarily think that is a bad thing. When this film embraces its campness it can be very entertaining. Chris Evans was a prefect casting choice for Steve Rodgers and this film does go in an unexpected direction by making Captain America basically just a mascot but once again the villain is weak and large sections of the plot are forgettable. Overall worth re-watching it is probably better than you remember.
Old war movies often bore me and I found Peggy so shallow in this so I don’t enjoy this as much as some of the other installments.
We go back in time, to 1942, and we get to see a generic origin story. A simple boy becomes a superhero in a red-blue spandex. All very nice and so, but were they not allowed to laugh with the situation from time to time? Come on, Steve, why so serious?
Aside from that, I did enjoy this introduction of Cap, Bucky, Hydra and Red Skull. This film contains many classic elements: the 40s costumes, the mad professor, the love interest, the fanatical Nazi villain. And if you listen attentively, you'll hear an occasional touch of Wagner in the soundtrack! Amusing.

This was a shitty movie. I'm glad Captain America: Civil War was able to regain my confidence in the franchise.

I just watched Captain America : The First Avenger for second time and I am still love this movie very much. I appreciate all the hard work that Marvel Studios and the actors put on this film. I noticed that Stanley Tucci had the gestures of my almost 80 years old grandma and grandpa. Which makes me believe in the authenticity of the time period. Stanley Tucci makes me think "This is why I like him. This is why he is great actor. This is what true acting looks like". Chris Evans is the main star of the movie and with a reason. I have watched some of his earlier movies and this is the first role where I see him be serious , unmovable and someone I want to follow into a war myself. Hayley Atwell role is iconic with reason. She is strong , hard and mysterious beautiful lady that is irreplaceable expert in the war. This movie is a great origin story. Marvel Studios are proving to be the best with their first movies in the MCU and their lastest.

@jonstark5 Agreed. I thought this movie was a great intro movie in the same vein as Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Dr. Strange. Not too perfect but still re-watchable. But I also think that it is made even better by the fact that the follow up, Winter Soldier, is one of the best of all the Marvel movies. This movie laid the foundation for that, and in many ways for the entire MCU even more than Iron Man.

The best movie from MCU. Simply unique.
A fantastic start to a whole new genre of endless lines of superheroes' movies. Basically, Captain America is the pioneer super hero before Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye or even Black Widow. His shield gave Agent Carter the idea to start S.H.I.E.L.D!
Was full of too many explosions... the SFX were not that great. Especially Chris Evans' giant head on a tiny body.
Agent Carter was sort of useless... she kissed him right before he was about to jump on a moving plane? Then she stands in a car that's hanging off of a ledge... not very smart, Peggy.
Almost fell asleep. But it was nice to see the origin of Hydra after Agents of SHIELD mentioned it.

I had heard some mixed reviews about it so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I have to say that it didn't surprised me and it's nothing especial.
The plot is not good, theres a lot of plot holes. I must say that the first half was good where the film tells the origin of the story and Captain American himself. The second half looked like it would never end and it bored me.
The acting was okay from all the cast, theres no one that I would like to stand out in particular. I just regret that Hugo Weaving didn't surprised me at all because I think he could have been an excellent villian.
Meh, I've seen better action flicks. Pulls at your heart a bit, but rushed often times too much to really care enough.
This wasn't too bad. I liked it...not sure that is how bucky died but hey...nice segway toThe Avengers. I hope the Black Panther enters the scene in one of the Avenger movies.

The movie was not bad. Not exactly top of the line, but still overall an slightly above average action movie.
The movie was definitely set in the Marvel universe, more than the other movies that still looked kind of in place with the real world. I mean energy weapons, helicopters, security camera's and a gigantic airplane with jet propulsion.... Most of these things were even to the highly advanced Nazi's in 1943 just plans on the drawingboard.
watched it tonight...possibly one of the worst superhero movies ive seen. Totally sucked.
Not as bad as I was expecting-the most interesting part of the movie was the very end. It almost seemed like they had the script written, and someone said, "ok, now how do we tie it in the the Avengers?"
I wonder how much Downey, Jr. and Jackson get paid for these little tags at the end? Like they show up for 1/2 a day of shooting.

Honestly found it kinda boring. Enjoyed Green Lantern more. Still excited to see the Avengers movie though.

I don't get it, why are people being so damn critical about the movie ? Ya gotta understand that it was just a catalyst so that the MCU franchise could grow on it; the movie was purely made to introduce Captain America, the cosmic cube and Agent Carter, nothing more nothing less, and it did a good job at that.
