I'm not a huge fan of this kind of movie, but I just loved it! I already lost the count of times I've watch this funtastic (funny + fantastic) movie. I highly recommended it :)
Standalone, it's a "meh" movie, really awkward and artificial.
Compared to the 1971, version it's just awful.
When a re-make of a film is done the natural thing for anyone to do is to compare it and unfortunately I'm going to have to do that a little to make my points. But I genuinely believe that more people would have enjoyed this film so much better, if the 1971 Gene Wilder film hadn't already been made. This 2005 adaption has just as much heart, the story is beautifully told and every member of the cast were absolutely spot on with the acting. As a huge Roald Dahl fan myself who has read the book many times over the years, I believe Johnny Depp captures the essence of Willy Wonka more accurately than Gene Wilder. Wilder was wonderful and did his own classic take on it but Johnny Depp makes him appear a lot more eccentric - much like he was in the original story.
The '71 version certainly has better music which helps justify its status as the classic adaption of the film which everyone loves. "Pure Imagination" is one of my favourite songs ever recorded and "The Candy Man" is also a gem. (These songs were written by one of my favourite singers, Anthony Newley along with Leslie Bricusse.)
One of the few flaws in the 2005 adaption is the fact that the music (particularly the Oompa Loompa singing voices) sounds very robotic and they've clearly tried to put in multiple styles of music. Arguably you could say that this fits in with the eccentric nature of the Willy Wonka character but I think it's because of this one minor issue why it falls short of becoming the classic film it should be. It doesn't have the charm of "Pure Imagination". Although it has to be said, that Willy Wonka is not meant to be charming! Quite rightly, he doesn't particularly like people in general. That was a major point lost on Gene Wilder. And therefore perhaps charming songs would be too wholesome.
The lyrics for the Oompa Loompa songs in the 2005 adaption were written by Roald Dahl as they're taken from the book and therefore once again, more true to the original story.
Unlike so many modern films, the camera work just tells the story! And that's wonderful because I'm SO SICK of seeing focus pulls for no apparent reason! I'm so sick of camera guys trying to show off! The only obvious focus pull I can remember in this film is when Wonka notices a grey hair in the barber scene. And that's good. A camera should go unnoticed. So for any camera crew reading this - just set the focus and leave it at that!!!! It's the story and acting we should be concentrating on. Stop showing off! They could pull focus back in the early 1900s but they didn't because they knew how to tell stories! It's nothing new. It doesn't make the film any better. It's distracting. SO STOP IT!!!!
All in all, this film is just as good as the '71 adaption and it's certainly more true to the book. Roald Dahl disowned the Gene Wilder version. We can't predict what he would have thought of this adaption but Johnny Depp certainly plays Wonka how I've always imagined him when reading the book. And as I've previously said, each member of the cast is outstanding. The acting is superb. There isn't a weak link among them. Tim Burton should be proud. Thank you for making such a wonderful film that I've already watched many times and will continue to see time and time again.
why so low rated, I give it a 9, I didn't watched the original one, so I don't have bias for it
Maybe it was a mistake to watch "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" directly after the wonderful "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory". Either way, I think this movie by Tim Burton from 2005 is awful. Burton's involvement is obvious from the start. The visuals clearly show the director's handwriting, as does the score by Danny Elfman and, of course, Helena Bonham Carter's inevitable appearance.
But that's all okay; things only get worse when Johnny Depp appears. Because I really thought every acting decision he made was terrible. While Gene Wilder played the role of Willy Wonka with nuance, Depp is extremely one-dimensional. He doesn't manage to pull off anything more than weird. I also didn't like the story as much. Although Charlie is in the title, he gets almost nothing to do, as several important plot elements have been cut. And the rest of the children also get far too little screen time for my taste.
Ultimately, this is clearly a Johnny Depp show, and even though I do like him in some films, he's really not my cup of tea in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".
The first time watching it I really couldn't get over the differences since I loved the original movie since I was a kid. As an adult re-watching this film, I would have to say I enjoyed it so much more. Probably because I was ready for Tim Burton's style added to it. It may not be my favorite version but it's definitely going on my list to re-watch instead of one and done. I'm glad I gave it another chance.

Watched this movie first when a kid and enjoyed it, as an adult rewatched again and I still think it's pretty good, I don't know why it has a bit of low score but I didn't watch the original.

My other half wanted to compare and contrast the remake and the original film, so here we are.
This film is definitely closer to the source material than the 1971 version in terms of plot and dialogue. In spite of this, it’s surely a stretch to think that Roald Dahl would have endorsed Burton’s work (having already rejected the 1971 film).
The main issue lies with Wonka himself. Depp finds no real soul in the character, and any sort of depth gets artificially enhanced by a weak side-plot about his father. The sense of mystery and danger are gone - Wonka is essentially a man-child now. It’s hard to see what they were going for.
The music has also lost a lot of its charm, with beautiful numbers like ‘Pure Imagination’ being replaced by a Danny Elfman™ score.
There are some pretty swanky special effects though. Deep Roy plays every single Oompa Loompa, a feat which cannot have been easy to pull off. Many of the sets are impressive too, especially when they lay off the CGI.
Like Wonka’s personality this film is colourful but sterile. It’s a shame that so much time, money and effort went into making something so unremarkable.

What a horrible bastardization of one of the greatest family movies in history.
This movie is just such a feast for the eyes and ears!
Though this is my least favorite of the Willy Wonka stories, it was funny as hell. I am not one who found the original to be particularly creepy, but if you were I can imagine you would rate this movie even higher than I did. This take felt like I was watching a serial killer in a horror comedy. Especially when the squirrels drag that girl across the room and her nails are digging into the ground. Imagine that scene with intense thriller style music and tell me that isn't TERRIFYING. Definitely worth a rewatch sometime soon.
I wish I saw this one earlier. The CG is so bad it's killing my enjoyment...it's 99% CG after all.

The CGI is dated. The songs are atrocious. It's already been said JD is creepy. And it's just not funny. They even f*cked up something as simple as the Oompa Loompas.
And by the way, I didn't grow up watching the original and this one came out when I was a teenager.
Only some of the Tim Burton aesthetics in the first act saves it from total disaster.
I think I like the aesthetics more than the actual movie. It's just so gorgeous, I didn't want to stop watching.
Full disclosure, the only reference point I have for this is pop culture and watching the musical in London more than five years ago. Story-wise, I enjoyed that much more than the movie. So there's that.
I also found the oompa-loompa performances to be ridiculous. not in the fun-ridiculous way of the movie, but just ridiculous and hard to watch at some places.
what I appreciate about Depp as an actor is that most of his characters that I've seen are very intentionally queer, which, to me, creates an even more layered watching experience. it gave me something to appreciate in a certain scene at the end of the movie, that otherwise felt rather tacked on and pointless. I still think it should've been cut, because I don't think the implications are great, but at least it wasn't garbage to watch.

This is far and away one of the worst movies I've ever had the displeasure to watch. Everything about this just awful. From the script, to the character development, to the directing, the acting, set design, costumes, music, and vision for the entire film, it was all horrendous. Johnny Depp comes across as a creepy, child molesting freak. I have no idea what anyone involved w/ this film was thinking in allowing that to make it to the screen. Even if this were a stand-alone film, not one based on a beloved classic, it would still be terrible.

The abysmal Oompa Loompa songs coupled with bad CGI and questionable use of flashbacks, left little chance at redemption. However, I did enjoy the use of Willy Wonka’s childish demeanor and his spiteful nature towards the awful children in this story.
I'm gonna be completely honest, this is the better of the two Wonka films.
the thing that i love about this movie is the aesthetic. and i don't understand the people who compare this one with the original expecting to be the same. beloved if you didn't notice this is a remake but not a copy so i really like the changes made and it was well done
