Although 30 years had passed since the original, this new Alexa-like defective doll, overexposed, bad cgi face and overall stupid design resulted in a big DOWNGRADE for Chucky and a disappointment for me.
Such a disgrace to the original
Creepy lil bastard....perfect for late night when your ol'lady hates horror flicks most
Worth watching. That is my review. You're welcome.
For a horror movie remake, this was actually pretty good. While it loses some charm from the original releases (mostly due to the lack of Brad Dourif) it was actually still an entertaining movie. Mark Hamill did a magnificent job in his role of Chucky, still sounding exceedingly creepy despite having to sound robotic at the start. While some might hate that it is quite different from the original, I thought the premise they chose was probably the best they could have gone with, besides what's the point of a remake if you aren't going to change anything?
I actually felt like movie could have been a little bit longer, the final act felt quite rushed in my opinion. Chucky's new design is not the greatest if you ask me but at least it is creepy and it definitely could have been a lot worse.
This was fun! Feels like with tech where it is today this is probably the best a reboot could be. Even the mix between real doll stuff and CGI wasn't the worst. I had fun with this and would keep watching sequels.
I've enjoyed the movie more than I though I would. Of course they only called it Child's Play for marketing purposes, because this could be a story unrelated to the original Child's Play with a different doll, a different name, etc.
this movie is apsolute garbage!
waste of your time, it has nothing to do with original one, except the name.
chucky as a character is awful, who "designed" him should get fired.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Watching this made me miss the original. It is an interesting take from the original while using modern themes. But the original was more sinister and evil and really felt the doll has a personality all its own unlike. Mark Hamil did okay doing the voice but it will never live up to the original voice and oh and that laughter. Did they make this Chucky have a resemblance to Mark??? lol
funny at times. found the chucky and andy friendship dumb and cliche even for a movie like this. I knew the what the ending would be like an hour before it happened and even what words would be used. The kid gang felt forced. Almost like they have to force in some 80s style. At least it wasn't OTT.
So, Child's Play was a good movie.
I wouldn't exactly call it great, hell compared to the other Chucky movies I would put them above this one. I don't really like how Chucky was portrayed, is my main issue. See, in the original films, Chucky is a loud mouth, sexist, alcoholic asshole who kills for fun because he enjoys it. His one-liners rival that of Freddy Krueger, and his kills are some of the most creative in all of horror. However, in this film, they made him almost sympathetic in a way. Like, Chucky does what he does because he doesn't want anyone coming between his best friend (Andy Barclay). While, in the original films, Andy Barclay is merely a means to an end for Chucky, who's only using Andy for a vessel to transfer his soul into.
However, the reason I rate this film so high is because on its own, when not comparing it to the original Chucky films, Child's Play is a fun horror flick. Each kill is great, gory, over the top fun, and while I personally don't like how Chucky was portrayed compared to the original, his portrayal works on its own merit here. The acting really lands, and I especially like the relationship between Andy and his mom, and how this portrayal of Karen Barclay is more laid back and chill than the original. Though, in the original Child's Play, Andy is only six years old, and here he's about thirteen.
Overall 8/10
Child's Play is a shite film, so I guess a shite film is Child's Play.
There is a total lack of anything vaguely scary here, and so many WTFs I couldn't even see the story . The most horrifying aspect of this movie is what they must've done to poor Aubrey Plaza to force her to abet in this criminally bad debacle.
This should have been average horror reboot faire. It became a good bad movie when it kept getting so over the top and super non sensical writing. A waste of Brian Tyree Henry’s talent.
My Ratings
10 - I love it, regardless of quality
9 - Very good, might not love but very well done or might love, forgiving some issues
8 - Very enjoyable or Just OK for me but well done
7 - Good
6 - Watchable despite not liking the film/show
5 - Mid
3-4 - Not great, but got through it
1-2 - Very bad/You might be a communist if you like this garbage
Mark Hamill takes on the iconic character of Chucky in the remake of Child’s Play. When a single mother gives her son a defective Buddi doll it soon runs amuck and starts killing. Updated for the digital age, the film satirizes the “smart” devise culture where everything syncs together and the human operator is removed. Some of the deaths are a bit grizzly, but most are over-the-top and ridiculous (in a fun way). However, the writing is rather poor and the Chucky character design is kind of creepy. A problematic film, Child’s Play is entertaining at times, but doesn’t deliver any scares and pales in comparison to the original.
What The hell they have done to Chucky, this movie took a horror icon and turned it into garbage
"This is for Tupac."
Mark Hamill and Aubrey Plaza, I love you two, but what is this?
While I like the Tongue-in-cheek humor the movie is self aware of itself, and at least it's trying something different. However, the new decisions wasn't the best and takes away the fun.
Well, this is the end...friend.
Well that impressed me and I love the new tech design behind Chucky that fitted great with the plot and the doll itself looked more realistic that made him more creepy and definitely a lot gory than the original.
Hands down I’ll always love the original two but this reboot powers over the rest of the Chucky franchise.
I definitely prefer the original voice actor because I thought he was so much more comical but (mark hamill) did do a good job thought and love that they used face motion along with his voice because you could tell it was mark hamill all over also I give good credit for the rest of the cast.
“Hey, I’m Chucky and i’ll be your friend to the end”
Really enjoyed this reboot. It certainly doesn’t take itself seriously.
It looks original. They didn't tried to copy the original. The concept is interesting.Total entertainment
A Killer Klowns from Outer Space poster? How freaking awesome is that!
Anyway, Horror reboots/remakes are always tricky, some are terrible, some are decent, most are awful, at least in my eyes! Child's Play is one of the better ones. It changes the story a bit more to this day and age but it still is about a killer doll. No voodoo this time! But evil programming, new technology and a new voice.
Mark Hamill had the tough job to follow up Brad Dourif. And Hamill succeeds in his own way. A higher pitched voice but creepy too. We also have the amazing Aubrey Plaza who should be in more movies and Brian Tyree Henry as Mike the Cop!
Gore is also making an appearance, as is "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2!", Chucky even goes all Leatherface! The kills are great, the humor not always land but it is there. Tween casting is getting better in this day and age. (It, Stranger Things etc. etc.) We have a creepy buddy song and a great use of new technology and how it lines up perfectly with the story. A huge company making all kinds of stuff and connecting it to each other.
Yes, Child's Play was a reboot I really enjoyed. I had fun and need to rewatch the whole franchise again! If wouldn't mind a sequel!
There are some interesting concepts here to modernize the story but most aren't fully fleshed out. There are some funny moments. Chucky's new look isn't the best but at least Mark Hamill gives a decent voice performance. We need Brian Tyree Henry in more movies, he is always great.
Surprisingly good, even if now it’s more like a Black Mirror episode. Or like the episode of Creeped Out where the A.I. cell phone went nuts. Than like the original movie. The new Chucky is more creepy than scary really and he’s even pretty funny.
Spoiler Warning: There’s some horror cliches though. If I wrote a horror movie or book. I’d spare the family pet for one. It’s just too obvious.
While the kill count is definitely less than the original or the sequels. However, the film is entertaining and darkly funny.
You may not leave thinking it was better than the original but it is fun. But maybe a little funner before Chucky goes predictably nuts.
I put off watching this for a long time because...duh! The original is classic! I was pleasantly surprised with this. It’s not by any means a great movie, but it’s a very fun, modern reimagining of the original. It’s got some good gore, some good laughs and a shitty doll. Like real shitty. I have no idea what they were thinking. Still, definitely worth the watch.
I’m not a Child’s Play fanatic, but I do enjoy the franchise immensely. After Scream, it’s probably my most rewatched horror franchise.
Going into this remake my expectations were pretty low, I wasn’t won over by the promotional material we’ve seen showing the new look Chucky.
But I was willing to give it a chance.
After 25 minutes I was already looking at my watch. I even considered walking out. And trust me, it takes a hell of a lot for me to hate on a movie. Heck, I don’t mind Seed of Chucky.
But this was just plain bad.
First off, the new look Chucky was horrible. The promotional material actually hides how bad he looks and moves. Mark Hamill, who is a brilliant voice actor, struggles to breath new life into the character, every time he spoke I was wishing for Brad Douriff.
The acting is poor and there’s little emotional investment in any of the characters.
I don’t discourage people from seeing movies and forming their own opinions, but I can safely say I will never watch this turd again.
Not a terrible AI gone wrong film, definitely not a "Chucky" film. Going into this expecting nothing, I think you'll have a ton of fun, but going into it looking for a possessed doll with a foul mouth you'll be sorely disappointed.
This film is sort of Chucky lite, it's a truly clean slate starting innocent as can be and growing darker as it learns. There is no satanic ritual to put a killer into a doll, it merely learns by watching and you must be careful what you teach it. It's basically a film version of the question "what if Sid from Toy Story got a hold of semi sentient toys and made them psycho?" which is already the loadstone for the 3rd act of an already wildly successful film. Trading one iconic voice actor for another wasn't necessarily a bad thing, Mark Hamill is a legend, but in the back of my head the voice of the legendary Brad Dourif taunted the new Buddi every time it appeared. You just can't get that out of your head. The best part of the film is Brian Tyree Henry being a good father figure when he doesn't even have children. Aubrey Plaza is also amazing but that isn't a shocker, instead the one we're supposed to care about, Andy, I was thinking would be killed of for being to annoying with the doll only part way into the film. All in all, I think this film could've even been produced not with the child's play name and could've done great. Mind you, it would have even more of these same topped off reviews it's already getting. Reviews saying it's a child's play rip off, reviews praising it for being a good AI gone wrong film a la 2001 for children, but it will always feel like a someone gag about HAL9000, Kit, and the good guys dolls deciding they won't take orders anymore.
Now let's wait for the terrible crossover! Brad Dourif's good guys doll falling from a portal in the sky into the middle of the Buddi factory as the new models 3's go out. Cursing and insults insue and Mark Hamill gets a new vocabulary and tool set.

When the scariest and grossest scene of your movie is a scene from another movie that the kids are watching in your movie, you've got a problem.
Who in they right mind, thought that was a good design for Chucky. Jeez the 80s version is way better. Also Megan did this premise wayyy better. Shame.
This movie is so underrated. People hated it because of the baggage that comes with being a famous I.P.
Remake something? What's the point. Reboot something? We didn't need it. Lose-lose situation.
Same problem of any remake, why?
Also why change the story?
There was no point in redoing Chucky, and really no point in changing it up. It would have been better to do another killer doll movie, it could have been better if it did have to be a chucky retread.
"This is for Tupac." ⠀-Chucky
Re-imagining of the 1988 classic, Chucky's now an A.I. no more Charles Lee Ray. It feels like an unnecessary reboot only 2 years after the last installment. I would of rather had another film in Mancini's world sinse the story is still going strong even to this day. Chucky's design is ugly and you know what's even worse? His voice, Mark Hamill was not a good choice for the voice it's too soft and just doesn't fit. What makes it watchable is the kills and the gore, they at least nailed that from the original. The presence of Aubrey Plaza & Brian Tyree Henry help and Gabriel Bateman is as ok as any other kid I guess. Dealing with an A.I. instead of a psychotic serial killer on the loose really brought this down, it doesn't feel intelligent and the stakes weren't as high because of that. The tech control was a good idea though and the third act was a blast.
“Horror” Movies with dolls are always ridiculous and boring - so is this one
this is for tupac! :knife:
Another reboot of a brilliant movie made into a average one. On the plus I now consider Aubrey Plaza as a MILF.
There was a time when I would only watch horror movies for the gore and shock value but I expanded my horizon and started watching masterpiece such as the witch and the blackcoat’s daughter and I realized there is more to horror then just scares and within the horror genres there are sub genres.
This was on my list for a long time but I never got to it and today I finally did and while the runtime isn’t long it’s a decent enough film.
The movie was more of a perspective of a family that’s trying to survive and nothing else matters. There’s not much that goes on but we see a lot that the family has gone through and the impact a post apocalyptic world can have on people.
The one thing I liked was that it had the hereditary vibe to it but comes no where close to being that gem.
It’s decent and probably a one time watch.
I was so excited for this movie but was not scary at all, was good but not so good.
Rebooting one of the most famous franchises in modern horror was going to be a tough ask and Lars Klevberg makes a reasonably good job of it with a suitably nasty and suspenseful movie.
Working without Don Mancini's prime asset – Brad Dourif – was always going to massively distance this film from the franchise which made the ginger haired doll a horror icon and replacing Dourif with Mark Hamill seemed an odd decision, but it's one which surprisingly works. Also, Aubrey Plaza (of Parks and Recreation fame) as the single mother who brings Chucky into her home for her young son puzzled me, though I thought she was perfectly fine in the role.
This is somewhat similar to the 'Rachael, Jack and Ashley Too' episode of Black Mirror, only the electronic component never had a human body and solely exists in the computer form. This allows for some social commentary on the extent to which a malevolent force could access (and recall for public viewing) your passing comments and those of your nearest and dearest.
I was left feeling distinctly nonplussed by this, though interested enough that I'll probably listen to the commentary and give the film another watch later this month.
No toys were harmed during the making of this movie. Animals and humans on the other hand? Well...
File this under reboots we didn't really need, though it is better than the many sequels that came before it.
I was a fan of the original Child's Play and not really of any of the previous sequels. It is very difficult to make a 3 foot tall doll appear dangerous. Part of that is making the doll appear uncontrollable and a maniac. This movie sets that up in its conceit, but I never really felt that in the execution because the rules it sets up for itself gets in the way. Not a horrible flick, but it could have been so much better with a different conceit.
I didn't like much the original chucky, but this was really bad. Not that a horror movie has to make sense, i guess, but this is ridiculous. It's a horror comedy with some splatter , surely not a horror movie. The idea to make chucky a doll with no safe protocols it's lame and already overused. I knew it was a bad movie, actually watched it cause of Aubrey Plaza. Please Aubrey, never again. This remake takes away the serial killer soul on the doll and replace it with wifi connection to google home, or alexa if you prefer. The sense?
this movie was just ugh! that's it.
It’s such a ridiculous situation that it’s actually a good movie to watch haha I see it more like a comedy than a horror tho, and by the way it’s not like the original one was a masterpiece come on guys
A decent remake of the original Child's play. I didn't like the way this Chucky looked though. The story was different from the original a lot of times and I thought that was a good thing, however, it wasn't as interesting as the original in my opinion. I definitely enjoyed this film, it was definitely a lot better than the Nightmare on Elm street remake in my opinion.
This was just terrible, watch the original version instead.

This is the remake nobody wanted.
The dolls redesign was the first thing they screwed up. And now it's just a toy that malfunctioned? Da hell. The original had some better context, he had a better "reason" for killing. This is just..... a screwed up toy.
They should rename the movie "baby terminator"
