A movie based on the board game Cluedo (which was always my favourite game as a child!) The way it is done is so clever. The characters are just like the board game with more background story which explains why everyone was in the house, I like that it also has 3 alternative endings. It's fun (the first time you watch it) to try and guess whodunnit!
Tim Curry is electric in this very silly but fun flick.
For about half an hour, the straight-up cheeseball nature of this relic holds its own. After that, the whole gimmick starts to fall apart and the jokes begin sagging badly. Despite a lights-out cast, the genuine bits of humor are sporadic at best, surrounded with loads of forced puns and winks or nods at the camera. By the end, I was fighting off a heavy set of eyelids and praying for everything to wrap up already. The idea of doing three different endings, chosen at random prior to each screening, was a brilliant concept but the execution leaves a lot to be desired - none of them really work.
A rather enjoyable film which was all about "Who done it?" Very much mysterious and remained so right 'til the end when they presented us with three possible endings leaving us still puzzled about what happens. The storyline reminded me of the 1930 film "The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case". Definitely worth a watch.
I am a huge fan of the board game, and so was excited to give this movie a try. I wouldn't say it was bad by any means but it was very uneven in its tone which left me quite underwhelmed. In my opinion it should have leaned much more into the mystery and a lot less on the comedy. Mrs. Peacock was particularly unfunny and annoying but in general all the acting was way to over the top. The only character this worked for me for was Tim Curry's Wadsworth who really held together the movie and kept it from getting boring. I did find the actual ending satisfying and did like how it offered multiple endings just like the game.
I do think a remake of this movie could definitely exceed this one with the right actors.
if you are, as I was, keen for a slapstick deadpan pantomime with Tim Curry then its a delight.
The conceit of the film, attempting to represent the games elements and justify the games constraints, is handled well and the first act assembling the guests is dynamic. Clue demonstrates characters in the direction and dialogue well at the start but as the storyline progresses it becomes frantic at best and essentially random at worst.
I can appreciate the 'after dinner play' atmosphere of the film today but for the cinema goer in 1985 experiencing one of a possible three endings it would be the optimal experience of the film.
I enjoyed the characters and storyline though take issue with Mr Boddy not only as a character but as the central motivator of the hook, the acting of Lee Ving as Mr Boddy was questionable. Without Tim Curry I think this is a one star review the development of the story and characters lost pace in the second half as presumably they need to allow space for the three endings to make sense, as much as they do.
At around 80min with one of the endings Clue is a entertaining and passable rendition of a whodunit.
Literally one of those movies you watch for the last 20 minutes or so, when Tim Curry shows why he's a much beloved legend.
According to Watchnow (via Trakt), this is available to watch on Kanopy, but as with several other titles I've tried to watch with Kanopy, it won't play in my region (Australia). It is however available through Plex Free Movies & TV.
A lot of fun. Even if you don't particularly like the jokes it's still watchable.
Wonderfully funny. I love the game and I love this movie. Just saw it right now again.

Almost 40 years old and it’s still as funny as ever !! Stupid silly fun

I am so glad I waited till I was older to watch this. I know I would not have appreciated it as much as I do now. Absolutely genius of a movie!
In a way it's a shame that this cast was wasted on this movie. Sure, it's an easy enough watch - despite the subject matter it's light and breezy and only ninety minutes long. I don't think the great Madeline Kahn did anything more than grunt or frown up until the last couple of scenes. The premise was actually pretty decent (they had to figure out why all of the guests were there) and the delivery was ok (Curry is excellent) but it forgotten even before the credits finished.

They tried. They really, really tried. But not even Tim Curry's superb acting chops could save the movie. This is on par with Clue: The VCR Mystery Game (available in full on YouTube if you don't have a VCR and a tape lying around), but less interactive.
“Yes, just the five. Husbands should be like Kleenex: soft, strong and disposable.”
- Mrs. White
Not to many comedies made with a complete cast this good.

Based on the popular board game, Clue is an intriguing murder mystery. A group of six strangers are invited to a mansion to confront their blackmailer, and when he’s found murdered everyone’s a suspect. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren, the performances are pretty good. But the zany antics are a bit much, and the plot’s kind of hard to follow. Clue is a problematic film, but in the end it delivers a fair share of laughs.
I love Tim Curry's energy in this. Michael McKean is great too.
Wonderful movie - lots of subtle one-liners and inside jokes that go unnoticed on the first watch. Fantastic nods to the game as well.
A movie about the popular board game "Clue".
This is in my top five all-time movies.
So funny, so fun, an all-star cast. Such a good feel.
The idea of a movie based on a board game makes most people skeptical, but trust me, it's awesome.

Gets better every time I watch it and always love the three endings, definitely one of my favourites from Tim Curry.
