Why do some movies have like 30 minutes of useles "prologue" (????)
I turned off the movie after 20 minutes of literally NOTHING.
Some cute faces don't make the movie..
Shaky camera for the sake of it. The beginning dialogue was as interesting as listening to a real dinner party guests talk chit chat. The Sci-Fi was pretty mediocre but not bad. It felt like they just mentioned quantum physics and theories so then it's supposed to become deeper. Cheap trick.
Few movies manage to be intimate and personal, while also otherworldly and bizarre. Your exposure to this group of friends is brief, but you learn quite a lot about them-- Not only their backstories and relationships, but (and especially) their ways of thinking and acting. In writing, you are often told to do more with less. "Never use a long word when a short one will do", the modern reach of the minimalist philosophy, cut anything unnecessary. In film that is so often not the case, but Coherence attempts it, by filming the entire movie in the director's home, by making each character familiar enough to need little introduction (How many of us know somebody with Beth's west-coast neo-mysticism? With Mike's good intentions, but shaky judgement?), by introducing subplots we're all so familiar with that the sparse minutes devoted to them can give us great complexity. The film's plot isn't innately comprehensible, and it seems at times to break its own rules, but it doesn't hurt this film. The improvised dialogue is intensely believable, and in all but the moment's-notice camera shots, the traces of the movie's non-existent budget are invisible to you and I. And perhaps the budget of the film is possible because of that essential minimalism, that "less is more" that film has rarely been able to embrace without losing its accessibility.
Hard to follow I didn't understand much and the camera work was terrible. They tried to do it as found footage and its was totally unacceptable. Not what i expected reading from the reviews.
With all the great reviews I suspected a hidden jewel, and it kinda was. However it annoyed me a lot.
Especially the dialog was extremely hectic and kind of retarded in the first 30 minutes. It got a bit better after that, but never really good. The actions and decisions were of people that just did not think, something that doesn't fit in a movie with a smart setting like multiverses. imho it only fits with comedy and some exceptions here and there, but that's just me.
One of the flaws that showed itself a couple of times was the time flow. Time is not really consequent throughout the whole movie. In 1 scene someone drinks up a bottle of wine within a minute, and on a few occasions people were gone for a longer period of time (10-20min) while in the house itself no more than 5 minutes were passed at best. This could be explained by the major plot twist in the end, but it would be nice if there were made 1 or 2 remarks about it if that was the case.
The movie is also not giving the viewer time to make their own construction of the situation but making a few emotional scenes right after an info-dump and repeating this process.
And when the characters finally start to understand how complex the situation could be, they decide to pop open the alcohol and get wasted.... seriously?
It brings the movie to a dramatic impasse that is completely unnecessarily and just slows down the mystery.
Luckily the movie manages to get some points in after that. More focusing on story development, having some very interesting plot twists and using the mystery to its benefit in stead of for the drama.
Those last 15 minutes are a good home run, and the movie sets up a completely other pace and setting. Suddenly moving from a group of people with no clue what's going on, to one main character with an objective.
Maybe they should've done this from the beginning to make it more interesting. The girl (Emily?) who took on this role was from the beginning one of the few actors I did not have many complains about, and was doing a good job.
Usually I am a big fan of the 'quantum multiverse' theory worked into a movie, and the concept in this one is very nicely done. But even though they tried (and to be fair the creators have a good grasp on the subject) it kinda failed with the overly dramatic setting and insulting the viewer by letting characters make dumb decisions.
Since it is a low budget movie, I decided not to be too harsh on the rating itself (it really is a movie that can match itself with the high budget ones) and I definitely would upvote for a remake with some better scriptwriting for dialog and some actions. Because I think that this flick could be even better.
Toooootally blow my mind.
It's really hard don't get lost (I did),
but it just makes you want to know what's going on harder. It was really exciting.
Great thriller involving quantum mechanics, and all sort of theories, each one well shown.
Watch and see by yourself. ;)
The few early reviews this got were really positive so starting the movie I was a bit put off at first. The budget seems to have been really small (with one set piece primarily) and the camera work can be overly shaky at times. The initial dialogue also did not make me want to know more about the group of friends... The events start out really small here but turn into one big cluster fuck which was a lot of fun to watch. This is also the movies primary strength: It keeps it going - more chaos, paranoia and desolation (can't say I didn't feel lost at a point though). Not sure about the ultimate conclusion but if you don't need FX in your sci-fi it's definitely worth checking out!
It is good...
But the shots suddenly changed and it looked like found footage and I didn't understand that...
For the plot I found it entertaining, besides that it has these events of changes of people, how the paranoia is created and that Beth is the one who kills herself uff...
In general it seems to me that it is understood (or I want to believe that), I need an explanation in depth...
Watch it, it's entertaining, it's entangling and has scares and logging that suddenly you don't know what's going on....
There are cliché things and things that you come to understand or know that can happen...
I liked the performances (I'm not an expert), and the setting, I loved the scene where they meet the red wands...
I think the ending is like "what the fuck is going on?
The looks of both of them say it all...
But I repeat I will go to see an explanation...
I really liked what this film was going for but the execution didn’t land for me. Hopefully not spoiling too much, but if we are to believe that possibly millions of timelines merged with other versions of themselves, how was it that it would end up with all the same characters at this dinner party? The final shot also nagged at me because I couldn’t make sense of it. I also struggled to attach to attach to any of the characters which made it a bit harder to really invest myself into the plot. It was still a fair watch, but I can’t help but think it could have been done much better.
Wow! This movie was absolutely insane. I loved it. Good luck on being able to keep track of everything as it continues to get closer to the end. This is the kind of movie where I really don’t know how to describe with out giving it away, so instead I’m just going to say, you need to see this one!
Coherence's svelte budget and lofty core idea are a testament to the belief that minimalist filmmaking leads to some of the most original and thought provoking movies. Those who can place interesting narratives over pure production value and visuals owe it to themselves to take the time out and watch this movie; it manages to weave such an extravagant, high-concept sci-fi plot without feeling overwhelming or high brow, all from a singular location with (almost) zero special effects. This was a delight to return to after not seeing it since 2014, and I'm annoyed with myself for not bringing my second viewing forward sooner.
Amazing movie. Truly underrated.
Deserves so much more attention than its getting.
I got to know they finished the filming in just 5 days and with the budget of 50 grand which is commendable!
Nice !! It's have been awhile since I watched a really good suspense, mistery movie.
Wow, such a good movie that makes you dizzled. It's recommended for people who are not into scary movies but loves some kind of overdose mystery
What the fuck. Coherence is a small budget mind fuck where weird things start happening all due to a commit passing by. As the night passes by more and more weird things keep happening which the group tries but struggles to understand and that’s all I want to say about the plot. I would recommend going in as blind as you can this is a small film with big ideas and damn is it good. This movie fucks with ur brain and leaves u thinking. I finished this movie and couldn’t go to sleep because of the way my mind was running.
Finally decided to watch this one tonight and am glad we did. Low budget and not without its faults, but quite an engrossing little mind melter. Pay attention and enjoy. 7.4
This was much more than I bargained for. I was expecting some ok B-movie, but this is amazing!
A lot of detail there, pay attention!
Shoutout to my fresh existential crisis.
(watched 5.2022) Somebody here on Trakt recommended this movie and I'm grateful they did...
What a great movie!! You have to pay attention and it's a true mind-bender right up until the end.
Story great, actors, great and the writing is great.
Must have been difficult to write with the 8 person dialogue going on without them sounding like typically bad European cringe-worthy conversations - very well done.
Highly recommend.
10/10
Wanna understand it? Here is the explanation from the director https://youtu.be/Z_sXZlgXLJA
About the end i read alot and went for that there were our main girl who found that peaceful house and decided to live with them, so she dragged the 2nd girl(the one belonges to the peaceful house) into the trunk of the car
, then a 3rd girl appears at bathroom so she hits her and leaves her at the bathtub, then she faints (she faints at the same moment the bathtub girl actually dies) then the whole thing end at morning by waking up and the bathtub girl disappeared (didnt get why yet).. Then the trunk girl phones her husband to help her. 6/10
"No, we're not splitting up. We just going to go in two different groups."
Best line of the movie!
In the time it took to argue about walking over to the neighbors, you'd already be there. Just go!
And Beth is hugging him like he is about to go off to some war. He's walking two blocks in a rural neighborhood!
Of course, she is also the same one that said, "you can't leave me alone" when people are just walking out to the front yard! OMFG! What is wrong with her?
Trying so hard to accept this absolutely impossibly shitty science... comets cracking phones... right... and causing a breakdown of reality for just one night even though comets are in the sky for weeks or even months...and they don't just break up and disappear. There are usually remains than can still be tracked. Shoemaker–Levy 9 broke apart and was tracked for two years before it impacted with Jupiter. This comet broke apart and vanished in 30 seconds? It looked like a sparkler with pieces just zipping away. WTF? And why just at night? Why didn't it affect reality during the day? Why was it house specific? It seems like everything on the same side of the planet facing the comet would be affected together. I realize that the answer to these questions is "low budget", but the story could have at least attempted to explain it while they were all throwing around stupid conversation at the dinner table.
Having a jump cut every 60s seconds doesn't help. And who puts a jump cut in the middle of a scene? Just so we don't have to watch someone walk from the doorway to the other side of the kitchen island? Really? Just change camera angles, don't insert a fraction of a second of black and advance the time 5 seconds... so dumb.
The first 45 minutes is almost unwatchable with crappy perspectives, choppy scenes, unnecessary jump cuts, horrendous dialogue, stupid characters, and tedium abound. None of the characters are all the likeable so putting with the rest of the crap is really hard. There needs to be one thing to get through the setup; likeable characters, great dialogue, interesting plot, pretty visuals, something! Unfortunately this movie has nothing to keep the viewer watch for the first half. After that, the story finally gets going, but the characters are still unlikable and continue to make horrible decisions in general. Let's drink and fight with each other instead of trying to figure what is going on. That seems like a good idea...
That being said, there are some smart things they decide to do. I especially love the box idea as a verification method. That is pretty brilliant, actually. Though how is it that everyone came up with the exact same solution? Some would in florence others purely on timing of implementing it and discovery by others. But everyone doing the same thing? Unlikely. The single house, multiple realities was a fun twist on a premise, but hardly original or mindblowing. The story of the wife killing her husband yet having her husband alive was nice foreshadowing in several ways. The change up of who was an original member of the party and who wasn't added some interesting story twists. The fact that Em finally realized that no matter how long you search you aren't likely to find your starting point is good, especially since she doesn't know what her house's box is since they hadn't made it yet when she left. I hate shows that indicate you can find your way back to your own reality out of infinitely many, or even just an incredibly large number. Though I have to wonder about the ones that stole back their box. How do they know it was their box and how did they manage to make the same random jump to that reality? That part might be worth a rewatch to see if it was explained or if it was an oversight.
Get off the damn phone while you drive asshat. It wasn't the comet that cracked your phone screen, it was the gods of safe driving telling you to fix yourself.
This movie has relatively a solid scientific backgroud which gives me lots of thoughts when watching Em try to figure out what is going on. Comet-passing-by situation was a mess, and then human nature come in. Good movie, I would love to recomment to friends.
Community did it better
(S3:E4)
It's a dinner party. The set is a dinner party, at a house with no other houses. There are actors and dialogue.
The world created here with so little is admirable and the result is stunning.
One of those rare gems you can watch again and again and still pick up something new with every watch.
Highly recommended.
I literally recommend this movie to anyone I talk to that loves mind fucks. Watched this thinking that it was going to be some B-list thriller movie that’s pretty forgettable. I WAS MISTAKEN, SO GOOD. The coolest part is that its loosely scripted so the reactions are genuine, making it even better.
A group of friends that I'd never be friends with get together for a dinner party on a night when a comet passes close to the Earth's atmosphere. Alternate realities and Reality show-style bickering ensue.
I seem to be watching movies lately that contain characters that I dislike. It could be that I am getting old and grumpy and am having a hard time liking anybody or it could be that I'm sick of the overly character-driven story trend that now permeates TV and Movies. This story is about a comet that causes parallel realities. There are multiple versions of the same people coexisting within a confined area. The mystery is trying to figure out who is real and who has been duplicated by the comet. That's the story. Unfortunately, too much time is spent on the personal lives, the soap operas of the characters' screwed up personal lives. I wanted more about the science of what was happening not who slept with or cheated on who. I get that without characterization there's nothing to care about, but "Coherence" almost goes too far...almost.
Thankfully, the comet story line is grounded by "Em" (played by Emily Baldoni). She's the only character who keeps her head about her. In other words, she's the one character that keeps us focused on what the movie is about, which is the comet. I liked the ending and was intrigued by how Em evolves over the course of the story.
"Coherence" is not a Horror movie. It is gore free. It also uses something close to a shaky-cam technique, even though it's largely set-bound and occurs in one room. It doesn't look like much, but the story is a twisty good time.
As I read in one comment the first part of the film is where the tension and suspense reaches its peak, it had really freaked me out. Although the script is poorer than in any other moment, the decisions that the characters took have more... ¿justification? (Because they didn't know anything of what was happening), so it's balanced. Then the characters continue taking tremendously ugly decisions, all the film.
I didn't fully understand the final. So... Em killed herself in her car but then another Em went in the house and she killed her in the bath... Why when Em wake up Beth comes out of the bath where the second body is? No way Beth didn't see the fucking body. And I know its the same bathroom cause Beth gave the ring to Em, the ring that had been showed right after Em kill her second self in the bathroom.
I guess i should watch it again.
I seen this movie few time, and even on repeated watching is still captivating. the idea behind it is great and makes you think. There is s bit of overacting here and there, probably due to some parts being adlibbed, but overall it's not that bad.
Gonna have to watch it again as it made very little sense. Or maybe I have already watched it ?
People in this movie are stupid... incoherence...
Awful. One of the worst movies I’ve seen in decades.
I have no idea how many times I've watched this movie. At least fifteen times. Watched it again tonight, and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. Simply, one of the best movies I've seen in my life. Love showing it to everybody I care about.
By the way, the number of people with short attention spans that turned this off after 15 minutes is something I don't understand. Why sit down to watch a movie if you're not going to give it time to say what it has to say?
“That’s funny, that’s you calling.”

This is a fun low budget mind bender. Makes me want to go out and buy some glow sticks.
:house_with_garden::candle::flashlight::gift::cat2:
I love screwed up time line movies but this was just kind of there. The characters are complete idiots almost to horror movie levels and right when you start getting an interesting plot line, the movie ends. It was 90 minutes but really could've been a lot better if it had been 2 hours, so that that final story arc could really play out.
That said, it's sort of incredible this was made for $50,000.
and i just watched another great mind fucking movie. i was really great
Brilliant low budget sci-fi, a must watch.
Four couples gather for a dinner party on the night a comet is set to pass by.
Damn. So good. Delicious tension. So glad I stayed up to watch this... Try not to read anything about it if you're interested.
What incredible low-budget paranoia inducing mind-fuckery... HELL YEAH.
I didn't feel it ventured too far into any kind of over intellectualized pseudo-science. It could have easily fell into that trap... Instead it gave just enough theory to give a sense of what could be going on, and then ran out the door (literally) with the rest...
I'd been waiting to watch this with my wife, now I'm really excited to watch it again with her...
Coherence is my favorite movie by a huge margin. The story, the script, the tension, the pacing—everything is just perfect. The lack of music amplifies the what's-going-on feeling. Perfect ending.
the movie is a waste considering it has a good main plot, i mean, a lot of things could have been simplified and more action/emotion could have been included. things are dragged a bit and not so well explained.
the best part is about 5 mins at the end.
seriously i expected more before watching this.
Alternative realities are fucked up! but yeah good film.
I've watched this movie at least 20 times in the last two years. This is now my litmus test for women. If she can understand stand it, she may get another date. If she cant, then she needs to leave.
A pretty good mindfuck movie!
One of the best movies I've watched so far! I decided to watch and I wasn't expecting much, but it really did surprise me. 10/10 movie, it's a must watch!
Until the discovery of the box is one of the best movies I've ever seen. There was suspense and mystery. Later, it became predictable and banal.
Great concept, bad camera work and even worse dialogs. In the first 40 minutes the characters behave like idiots and I almost stopped watching the movie, but the second half is pretty good, just keep watching, it's worth it.
Great movie, loved the concept. It's intriguing and getting more tense till the end. Watch in your own home..
I'll i have to say is to pay attention when Em calculates the probability...the calculator said 5.000.000+, when she saw those digits she understood everyone around her except the ones that gave the exact same the dice said, were from other houses... probably from a billion others and somehow connected the group of 8. that's why she left, cause she understood also that every house represented a different reality, that's why she skipped some of them and stopped at the one that with the group socializing and not being aware of the reality split, replacing herself.
Lets say there's 3 of you... One that is gentle, one that is smart, one that is a bad person, Each one in a different house not being aware that is all of them 3 go outside they will see themselves and probably freak out, you have timer (The comet) that lets the original you stay where you are or go to other house and replace yourself. Em "The protagonist" understood while she skipped houses seeing herself in them, but she understood that is impossible for her to go back to her original house since she left the house she was originally in because there were 5.B+ the same and she had to quickly look for another reality for her to be into, she went after a reality where the 8 of them were happy.
So, the reality thing got fucked when hugh and amir went out... it was impossible for the original themselves to go back. There is a scene were a hugh and amir go back with a red glowstick and a blue one and hugh starts fighting because mike hooked up with hes wife, but that mike was from another house (Apparently from another reality were he never did such thing).
When i say original i refer to the ones at the first scenes, but there is no such things as originals... they are themselves but in different type of ways (Personality,llifestyle,etc...)
Sorry for grammar. My main language is Spanish.
Brilliant and engaging. Much better than many movies that spend millions of dollars on especial effects.
Buenísima ciencia ficción sin fuegos artificiales, es como una obra de teatro.
Surprising movie, low budget but great idea and good acting. This is the kind of movie you want to watch again just after having watched it because at some point you feel lost, like you're in the Twilight Zone, and that's what makes this movie so good. You want to understand, you want to discover the details that you probably missed, so you want to watch it again.
Coherence is perhaps one of the most original and captivating science-fiction films of recent times. With a huge simplicity but a very engaging atmosphere, can completely absorb the viewer into it.
The film is set during one night, when a group of friends gets together for dinner. That same night, a comet will pass very close to Earth. Since one purpose of the dinner would also be attending this event, some theories about strange and inexplicable events about comets come to the table during dinner. What is certain is that while they are just quietly enjoy a nice night, strange things start happening, causing panic and paranoia in all the elements present in the house.
With a very low budget and filmed in documentary style, Coherence has a concept that will confuse our mind completely, as you were one of the characters of the story. You begin to question why all events and that is what makes it so good. The interest that can have on the viewer is huge and you can not take off your eyes from the screen. We try to put all the pieces of the puzzle, such as the characters, these pieces will make you go round and round in the search of an answer.
The dialogue is very dynamic and interesting, and the performances of the actors are very natural which makes it even more credible, even with such a strange story.
Coherence is a film that will confuse your mind and make you feel like you are in the place of one of those characters. The end is perfect for this story and the best of all is the mysterious feeling that continues in the air even after the credits begin to roll.
Great movie, how low budget sci fi should be done, I now want to binge on a load of twilight zone episodes
Fresh. Innovative. Crazy. Simple and Brilliant movie.
It was right up my alley and I totally agree with the quote on the front cover.
"One of the best science fiction movies in years".

Vaya paranoia O_o Pero está entretenida, es curioso como con tan poco presupuesto se puede conseguir suspense y ciencia ficción a partes iguales simplemente usando la psicología... :)
