Cold Fish 2011

Well this was quite something. Gory and dark with tropical fish to boot! Not sure if I would see it again soon, but truly see it once!

The suburbs of horror: slow, monotonous, and not a lot going on.

If only the first 2 hours had been as deranged as the last 20 minutes.

"Cold Fish" is yet one more iteration of Sion Sono's offbeat comedy bursting into rhapsodies of ero-guro. A weak and passive man gets involved in an escalating series of crimes, and at the same time cannot deal with his second wife's apathy and his daughter's cosmic dissatisfaction. But how much more can a man bear before he breaks? The pessimistic and nihilistic ending might not be what viewers wanted, but I thought it was actually one of the film's highlights. I was expecting something even more extreme, to be honest.

Denden and Watanabe steal the scene here. Their performances might feel caricatured, but I can assure you that old men of this kind are not a rare thing in Japan.

The second entry of the "Hate Trilogy" by Japanese provocateur Sion Sono, many of the director's themes can be found in this movie, including: sex, violence, and murder in modern Japan, the breakdown of society and traditional family.
