Coma 1978

An entertaining thriller which falls a little short of its lofty attempt to relay suspicions of "Big Medicine". "Coma" is sort of dated. I couldn't help but notice how much more scary hospitals must have been back in the '70s. The fact that I lead with that sentence should tell you some about the impression it left.
Michael Crichton is a favorite writer of mine but I didn't find anything that stunned me in his second directorial effort. I'd say Crichton's visuals here are nothing special. The suspended bodies are a cool image and the Jefferson Institute was a sufficiently imposing and malevolent site. The acting was convincing and Genevieve Bujold relayed plenty of frustration and desperation. This is her show. Michael Douglas doesn't have much to do until the end.
The movie was worth a couple hours of my time but it's not one that I would spend any extra time searching out supplimental information about.

Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton adapted Robin Cook's medical suspense novel into this late 70's thriller. For film buffs, you get an early instance of Michael Douglas's dark but heroic turns, a late Richard Widmark role, Rip Torn as a young, rising star and brief roles for Tom Selleck and Ed Harris (Ed Harris's movie debut). The pacing is 70s so some would call it a slow burn, but once the score finally kicks in (nearly 45 minutes in), the flick has good suspense and some good understated tension. 8/10

"Coma" is very good and underated 70's classic suspenful thriller starring Michael Douglas and Geneviève Bujold. The film has all the keys for a thriller film, and keeps you in suspense from beginning to end. The main story of "Coma" might look like a movie but certain facts are definately real about this film. If you love 70s films, and love a good suspenseful film to watch at night, I definately recommend this...

Immediately engaging and entertaining paranoiac thriller directed with plenty of style! Great performances and a few very early appearances by some greats. Could have used two more scenes with Rip Torn.

After one of her patients goes into a coma after a routine operation, Dr. Susan Wheeler investigates. She learns that several otherwise healthy patients have met the same fate and then been sent away to a mysterious institute. This is a genuinely frightening medical thriller/drama boasting a strong female lead performance and excellent 70s paranoid vibe. This film does a great job portraying the way healthcare can lose sight of its mission, when providing care isn't treated as more important. It starts off a little slow, but once the plot is set it's filled with great tension and atmosphere. For the most part, the story is really interesting and definitely keeps your attention throughout. The heavy feminist tone in here adds to the overall impact of the film. That creepy institute building and extraterrestrial coma patient room make it even more frightening.

I must have watched another movie? This got boring and all the thrills have aged badly.
