I get why people don't like this sequel.
It felt more like an ode to the first movie and the characters than a proper sequel.
Liked how they used actors from south africa.
But you could see the jokes did not hit as hard as the original or that the story was original. But that was to be expected at some level.
Still I enjoyed it as I went into it with a open mind and no expectations.
I wanted to like it but I found it very mediocre.
I was so good to see Eddie smiling again. I loved this charming movie, it felt good to see those people together again!
Waste of time, money grab/stroll down memory lane. Waste of talent.
If this were a standalone movie I would say that it’s decent. I chuckled a few times and was amazed at the cast that was put together for this film. Unfortunately this is a sequel to Coming To America, one of the most funniest beloved comedies of all time. And this film just has too much to live up to and misses the mark quite significantly.
I think the entire point of this movie was just big over the top music / dance scenes, and cameos. Because there just wasn’t anything much else to it.
Don’t waste your time with this movie, unless you just want to get it checked off a list.
I watched for the nostalgia and got a few laughs here and there. It was never going to be a critically acclaimed film but for those who grew up on the first movie I think we have closure :satisfied:. Good to see Wesley Snipes
Truly one of the biggest disappointments I've ever seen. I was skeptical to begin with but held out hope and man this movie had no hope
Strictly for fans of the original.
Watched it as background noise after the first few minutes.
Not one of Eddie Murphy’s better movies in the recent past. Have a feeling he did this strictly to makes the fans of the original happy and for the considerable paycheque he must have received from Bezos.
I knew regardless of what this new version was people would hate! I’m so tired of people being so critical lol. Nothing is going to be as great as the classic and any version of this movie would be compared to the original. It wasn’t fantastic but I didn’t care because I loved seeing Eddie and the rest of the cast in this light. I didn’t go into watching this for any other reason except the nostalgia of it all, and you should to!
This was a lazy pointless remake of the original movie it was very fitting in the movie they made a point to mention long sequels to movies nobody asked for this movie fits perfectly. This is a retread of the original movies story recon and everything. I had zero expectations for this film and knew this would be no were near the classic original in terms of quality the jokes in this new movie were bad the woke sjw politics were not nessesary and just annoying. This is a insult to the classic original and shouldn't have happened. The barber shop scene was the only good sequence till the white jewish character started saying we are being taken over by nazis a dig at trump obviously. I am not a trump supporter at all and find this sequence annoying political bs. The way akeem had a son was a stupid lazy way to recon the original and continue the story. The new actors were annoying I don't recommend this trash to anyone the movie is predictable woke trash.
I had low expectations when I saw the trailer, but it surprisingly managed to disappoint me even further...
Flat characters, boring plot that relies on the success of the first movie and a painfully lack of ideas.
Cute enough for a rainy day. Nothing your going to want to see twice. Might be fun to watch the first and second back to back when you just want an Eddie Murphy laugh.
This was a huge (noticeable) commercial. The plot was grossly underplayed and storyline disjointed. I knew it would be corny but I actually thought it would be more kitschy. This failed to meet my expectations.
A sweet, nostalgic reprisal of the original. Curiously a family movie where the only way you’d understand the jokes is by watching a somewhat risqué comedy from thirty years prior.
Don’t waste your time with this, just rewatch the original!
Was it as great as the first one? Of course not but, if your a snowflake do not watch it. Like the first one, it's all satire poking fun at society. If your not into satire then this is not the movie for you.
Biggest load of crap iv watched in years
-As a kid in the late 80's I'd watch Eddie's movies constantly, So seeing all these characters again is pure bliss, and a nice Goodbye in someway-
it's OK, it wasn't boring, but its not rewatchable, I can barely be arsed to even write this.
There's a few good jokes, I felt safe for the first 20 minutes, like its gonna be a decent enough sequel.
But:
it almost immediately loses the fish-out-of-water fun that CTA was all about, the son is found straight away. his prince life barely impacts him, his love story happens straight away.
The Barbershop guys are great again. (they need their own movie)
Perfect for putting on during dinner time.
Having it be a PG? certainly affected it - I guess they didn't know it would go straight to Amazon, so could have had much better language in it.
The CGI is utterly shit,
There's a scene set in the 80's which is well done, apart from the CGI on Eddie and Arsenio's faces
There was lots of talk about Tracy Morgan starring in it, they should have just had Jermaine in made-up for the 4 minutes his character was on screen
A sequel I didn't need...at least the wardrobe and sets were absolutely fantastic, unfortunately for me nothing else was.
I was a little bored, think I managed a small laugh once and couldn't wait for it to end.
For me COMING TO AMERICA should have been left well alone, this wont be a repeat viewing for me....I wont be watching it again.
Should it have been brought back after 35 years if this is the best they could do? No... with a small caveat.
It was great to see many of the characters revisited - the barbershop guys, the Zamunda royal staff, Randy Watson and the Reverend - and there was some nice nods to the first film that genuinely worked. Sadly the material here isn't as memorable as the first.
But two major flaws - it felt a bit like SNL do an extended Zamunda sketch with Eddie guest-starring...
Eddie himself was the worst actor in the film. His Akeem just didn't sit right - overacting one minute, lifeless the next. Like Eddie in real life now.
Credit where it is due. As a Prince fan, I loved the use of Gett Off. And I thought the original film had a weak last 15 minutes... This is probably at its strongest in the last 10 minutes. And seeing Wesley Snipes back on screen was nice.
But we didn't need this sequel. And if we were going to be given it, it should have been much stronger. At least as funny as the first (which is an overrated but classic 80s comedy.)
Here's how to summarise... I've seen the original many times. I'm sure I will not watch this one again from start to finish... Dip in, dip out but not a full rewatch. That's a shame.
6.75/10
What a disappointment! I had a feeling the sequel would not be as good as the original, but damn.
The Barbershop scene was the best part of the entire film.
I grew up with COMING TO AMERICA, it’s one of my most watched comedies of all time. I love it so much that it’s hard to watch a sequel released 33 years later without constantly thinking of how special the original was and comparing the two.
I knew going in that this sequel wouldn’t come close to the quality of the original, so I tried to lower expectations. I sat down and for the first 15 minutes I had a smile on my face as it leant into the nostalgia of the original.
Then the film settled into its main plot of Akeem tracking down his ‘bastard’ son and from there the quality dipped. I wasn’t bored, but we started spending less time with Akeem, instead focusing more on the son.
Jermaine Fowler does a solid job as the heir to the throne but he’s no Eddie Murphy and his scenes just didn’t excite me. Some will find his mother, played by Leslie Jones grating but I found her funny, I like her. Even in GHOSTBUSTERS she made me laugh.
Wesley Snipes joins the cast and he’s brilliant. He lights up the screen every moment he appears. The way his character links back to the original is clever.
Arsenio Hall brings back all his classic characters from the first film including a new character, Baba. This character so damn funny that I wish we got more of him.
I was worried the returning Shari Headley who plays Akeem’s wife Lisa would be sidelined in favor of the new characters, and for the first act she is, but thankfully she’s given much more to do as the film goes on.
The trio of Akeem’s daughters are well acted and I liked their aspect to the plot and how it plays into the final act, though from the get go it’s pretty obvious where the film is heading for his oldest daughter.
I enjoyed COMING 2 AMERICA, sure it’s far from perfect, it has its flaws. The PG13 rating doesn’t help, but there is a genuineness to the story and moments of quality. It made me laugh in spots, and seeing everyone return was wonderful. It does though feel like a watered down version of the original, but overall it’s entertaining enough to warrant its existence. Just don’t go in expecting the same quality of the original.
That was WAY better than I thought. Really entertaining
I think the strong point of the movie was the nostalgia. Seeing all (like 95%) of the original cast yet again was something beautiful. The story by itself is a reverse from the first one, so nothing new. I guessed how the movie would unfold from the first 15 min i believe. It had some funny scenes, so overall, it delivered properly. A good 7 for the nostalgia factor
To make a good sequel, the return of the same actors after years is not enough, something more is needed... and that something was missing.
I think it serves very well as a movie in isolation, I am giving it a 8/10.
HOWEVER, having watched Coming To America (only once, CTA was for for me about the black subcommunities of America. While these are certainly still present in C2A, they are much less so.
Coming 2 America may have brought back the beloved characters from the original film, but it doesn't even come close to capturing the magic and charm of the first movie. While the returning cast members delivered solid performances, the film's plot felt contrived and lacked the heart and humor that made the original so iconic. Despite some enjoyable moments, it ultimately fell short of its predecessor and leaves you wanting more.
The movie is a disappointing sequel that relies on nostalgia and recycled jokes. It fails to capture the charm and humor of the original film. The plot is contrived and implausible. The characters are bland and stereotypical, this movie is a waste of time.
Well overall this was actually better than I thought it would be. The jokes were funny, and it picked up on the same momentum that the first one left off with. The only annoying part that disappointed me in this movie, is that they just had to find a way to sneak in a little bit of SJW orange man bad, and Obama was so perfect nonsense. Seriously! Both of their time has came and went already. Get over it, and stop going for low hanging fruit. But anyways at least they kept it to a more minimum than what other movies would of done.
For as long as it took to make a sequel, I expected so much more.
Pretty boring, without any spark.
It was nice to see the old actors. Quite a good movie. But don't expect him to surpass the original. 6 out of 10
Ok it wasn’t as good as the original…. They rarely are…. But it was a nice diversion…. And I didn’t hate it
A fantastic stand alone movie, I've not seen the original but I'm definitely going to watch it now
This movie is a backward stereotype of Africa. Not as bad as I thought it had some funny moments. Most importantly there was no need to for 2 to be made.
How many sequels are put out 33 years later? Very ambitious to get this to the screen. Yea, it may not live up to the original, but I think this was a nice blend of nostalgia, homage to the original, and funny new scenes. Good to see most of the cast return.
was it necessary?....no, but was it fun?....hell yeah!
I'll admit it, this film surprised me multiple times. Firstly because I never knew it was even in the pipeline, secondly because I thought James Earl Jones had died (sorry JEJ - at least it was a pleasant surprise when I saw you on screen), and thirdly because I really enjoyed it.
The original was a childhood favourite of mine. It was the first film I remember noticing the same actor playing multiple roles, and also the first film I remember noticing a crossover cameo.
So maybe the storyline is a bit on the weak side, but the original was lacking there too. We don't watch movies like this for a gripping storyline, we watch them for light hearted entertainment. Every scene with General Izzi & his entourage was entertaining & brilliantly choreographed, and each original cast member's appearance brought back happy memories of the first film.
It may be a modernised version of the original, but I hope I don't have to wait 30 years for the next chapter from Zamunda. Most "sequels to old movies that nobody asked for" should be avoided, but this is one I'm glad I didn't miss.
First part is very funny & has great cameo’s but the second part gets kinda cheesy & dumb. Much like the original. I liked it.
“It is true about the sequels. If something is good...”
Coming to America is a national treasure and has a high score on the rewatchability scale. Coming 2 America is a film that while it has a few laughs, just does not come close to it’s predecessor. The costume design was legit though, and the dancing/music was pretty good, I just am already forgetting most of the scenes as I type this out. Not trying to be too critical, but if a movie is somewhat forgettable, it isn’t great.
This movie didn't need to happen. Even the movie itself acknowledges that! It had its funny moments, that is true. But, it felt like an archeological dig as the fossils of the 90's are excavated and paraded on the screen.
The highpoint of this film is Wesley Snipes and I didn't even know he was going to be in it!
This movie was soooo good! Very funny gags. Many references to the previous part and some things from the real world. Political correctness has been set aside and we were able to laugh at all sorts of polite jokes. I'm glad movies like this still come out these days.
The original is a timeless classic with lots of lots of laugh.
The sequel is no way near the original but I very much liked part of the story. It's none of the comedy parts. I did have a smile from time to time but this movie is not particularly funny. It's over the top and like a parody. The strong part for me was the male heir story.
Why should he be looking for a male heir while he has 3 daughters? I would have loved to see a more serious tone at the end with the daughter taking command and ordering troops to fend off the enemy instead of doing it herself.
Was really looking forward to this from when I first heard about it..... its a shame it was more about telling us it was a sequel to a really good movie than actually being one. Wesley Snipes was good though.
This was better than I thought it would be. I went into viewing the movie with low expectations. What I did enjoy was the flashbacks to the first movie and when the characters would reference the previous movie.
Ruins the original film....sad because I actually had high hopes for it
Off the bat, it was cool seeing the same faces, who made the first one so amazing, come back. It was especially amazing to see James Earl Jones again! As far as the movie, it wasn't very good. I think the storyline they chose was very predictable, and forced the actors who made the first one, to take a back seat. At some point in the film, it felt like there wasn't even enough Eddie Murphy! Pretty much all of the new people, besides Wesley Snipes weren't funny or unique at all. There was some good jokes in there, but most of it was hit and miss. Overall, it just felt like one long skit.
Not terrible sequel and actually fits the tone of the original. Unfortunately, it has even less true laughs but remains semi-amusing.
It takes some minutes to find its rhythm (some really corny jokes early on) but once it gets going it becomes more watchable. 6.5/10
A movie that stands alone from the original, but in a good way. Great cast, good laughs, a perfect Saturday night movie.
Loved how how only two white people were 1) Louie Anderson and 2) Colin Jost
Just a lot of low level jokes, mediocre and not really funny.
I didn't espected a good sequel to the original one, I just got what I suspected. This kind of jokes nowadays doesn't bring neither boomers to laugh.
it's hard to comprehend how bad this is. Think of the worst thing you have ever seen, yeh it's worse
A static image of Eddie for 90Mins would have been so much better.
There's a moment in the movie when a character berates Hollywood for sequels nobody wants. How apt, because this is the kind of movie he could have been talking about. It's watchable but pointless and rarely funny. The original (whisper it) was always a little bit overrated and this falls way below that film's limited standards.

10 minutes into Coming 2 America and l can tell this it is going to be tripe.
