Critters 1986

Classic 'horror' film made in response to the box office hit Gremlins. It didn't do as well but it's entertaining enough nonetheless.

Entertaining. Fun monster film with decent effects (for the time) and good performances by Dee Wallace and M. Emmet Walsh. Fun early performances from Scott Grimes and Billy Zane round out a fun romp of a horror movie.

While it's probably my least favorite entry of this series, it's still soo much damn fun. I love these furry little rascals. Such a great, likeable family, that share a realistic dynamic, that make what happens more exciting. There's a few producer-mandated changes in the movie that sour it a bit, but they don't stop this from being such a great time.

Some very hungry Gremlins in this film.

"Critters" is one of those rare movies that comes along that, despite all odds against it, manages to strike just the right chord. A little-monsters mix of scifi, horror, and comedy, the film uses its low budget as part of its charm. It scales the film farely small, that being a family farm that's attacked by Crites, voracious little eating machines from outer space, rather than a world-spanning threat. This is likely due to the low budget, but it works very well because the lower scale gives the audience a chance to know and identify with the characters, including the Crites themselves. The Crites are more than just Gremlins from space. They have their own language (subtitled, of course) and given that there are only a handful of them gives the filmmakers a chance to give them some character as they interact with each other and the environment (watching one of them try to talk to an ET doll is worth a chuckle). It's not a great film, but it's still a fun way to spend an hour and a half. Just don't expect the same magic from the sequels.

Small furry critters that ain't very friendly...

NO...it's not your neighbours semi-rabid cat, it's some not-so-friendly critters from outer space coming to EAT you.

Just as funny as I remember it, Critters makes for a rather enjoyable hour and a half. It might be a bit dated in some places, but are still funny, and would please anyone with an interest in 80's "creature" horror. Look for the other three outings as well. They are all worth watching with the first sequel as the best of the rest.

"Critters" is one of those movies that you just sit back and chuckle at. And you don't laugh because it's bad or funny its just got a goofy campy charm that you can't help but smile at. The simple way in which the special effects are executed the basic story of a family terrorized by little furry smart-asses from space...it's all good. But it's far from great or even very good. "Critters" is just an enjoyable little romp. It's a movie that would never be made today without being turned into heartless CGI-fest.
