Cheesy and generic. Also a The Shining ripoff.
It's an interesting failure with this being the director's first US film. There is an over reliance on quick edits and loud effects to create scares, but the filmmakers create a foreboding atmosphere throughout that works very well within the film and include some Lovecraftian horror elements that make it watchable. The set up of the plot is initially intriguing and had the filmmakers simply created a haunted house movie it would likely have worked much better. Instead they unnecessarily add in more elements that only serve to make the plot overly convoluted and ridiculous, despite the best efforts of the actors to sell it. The unrated version is preferable.

I couldnt follow what this movie was trying to do... A confusing mess...
