Downton Abbey 2019

I was nervous about this movie, but it turned out to be AMAZING! As a long time fan of the show, I felt it did it justice and was a great homage to what made the show great. It felt like coming home. I loved how all of the characters had their moment to shine. Thomas Barrow is my favorite, and his arc made me so happy! His character has matured so much and seeing him in action again was wonderful. The cinematography was just beautiful, the actors put on superb performances, and the music was as always - amazing. There were a couple cheesy lines and rushed plots (understandable - it's a lot to cram in 2 hours!), but they made me love it more. My friends who came with who had never seen the show even loved it as well!

Having watched and enjoyed the series I was looking forward to this big screen outing. So disappointing.
The writing was appalling. Clearly a new team of writers and Julian Fellows had stepped away. Too many characters which was fine for a long running show but storylines squashed into a movie run time meant that nobody was fully served.
I don't mind the predictability but it was shoe horned in with the subtlety of a preschool drama.
Don't sully the series and avoid this where possible. It does nothing to further develop any of these characters.

King George and Queen Mary visit Downton. Royalists delight and Republicans cringe. This felt.like two mediocre episodes of the later seasons strung together, with very little tension or story upstairs and a stupid storyline downstairs. It's entertaining enough for fans despite the cheesiness. There are certainly some amusing moments. The highlight was the costumes - absolutely stunning. I wish the camera showed them off more. I'm glad I watched once but wouldn't watch again unless for the visuals.

Mr Molesly stole the show... as per usual.

You have to have watched the show to be a 9 or 10. but if you haven't watched the show, you must first. If not your thing, time period, etc, watch a couple episodes of the show and then decide. It isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's a great time period story for those it's written for.

It took me quite a while to finally watch this movie. I really enjoyed it. It is a worthy finale to the series and has the same fun moments and at the same time stays serious. Great performance of everyone and great story to end this wonderful project.

I watched the show and loved it.. I get that the film needed to have something to keep it going and that was the royal visit but I felt like a lot of the main characters weren't given much depth as compared to the tv show, we heard very little from lord and lady grantham or cousin isobel and even violet had very few lines really.

The plot is insignificant but the film is completely spectacular. It is taken care of in detail. I think the film is for those who were lovers of the series because although it is understood without having seen the series, you don't take it in the same way. In the end, the film is about seeing the characters you became fond of in the series and how their lives continue.
It's very difficult to bring such a successful series to the big screen.

They did a great job with bringing Downton to the big screen. Lovely entertainment, indeed.

I haven't watched the TV show and I don't plan to, but this does work, in general, as a movie. It does a good job at introducing the character for the ones of us that don't know them and their role and personality and such. Similar to other TV shows made movies, it has an excess of characters and names that it could be easy to get lost, but it actually accomplishes to make easy to follow who is who without remembering the name, so props for that. Also does a good job as to why this has to be a movie and not another episode, so another kudos for that.

I'd say this is how you properly make a movie out of a TV show, expecting and knowing not all the people watching are fans or have even previous knowledge about what previously happened on the show. Whether or not this is a good movie per se, I don't think much of it, but I still think it's a good achievement.

Julian Fellowes is comfortable in this environment and with these characters, which comes across in the writing, though sometimes it feels like the big screen is too big for them. It could almost be seen as a two-hour Special, which works with the simplicity (and lack of depth) that the series had. But it's a gracious and infectiously elegant encounter that nonetheless seems to waste the Bonneville/McGovern pairing, almost cameos in this version.

Like an English commoner, Downton Abbey never rises above its station as a television series to the realm of cinema.

I never watched the series but I watched the 10 minute recap and that helped a little. It was hard to follow but I think I got most of the plot. Still I fell like I would of enjoyed this a lot more if I knew the characters. The production values are all top notch. This looks expensive and beautiful. The cinematography was great too. I think this is more for fans only but it's still somewhat entertaining if you like costume dramas.

This movie's tribute to the series was grand, beginning with the premise - Downton gearing up for a royal visit. The writing was splendid. There was exquisite attention given to each of our favoured characters (I asked myself before the show, "Who is my favourite character?", but, as each one made their way into the story I realized my fondness for each.). The twist was clever (as someone remarked, it was UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS meets DOWNTON ABBEY). But, for most who came to the theatre, it was simply the celebration of a beloved series, that we all still miss. Because of my affection for the series and the movie, I'm tempted to rate the film 10 (perfect) out of 10, but, instead, I will give it an 8.5 (grand) out of 10. [Historical fiction]
