Judgement is coming
In the future, America is a dystopian wasteland. The latest scourge is Ma-Ma, a prostitute-turned-drug pusher with a dangerous new drug and aims to take over the city. The only possibility of stopping her is an elite group of urban police called Judges, who combine the duties of judge, jury and executioner to deliver a brutal brand of swift justice. But even the top-ranking Judge, Dredd, discovers that taking down Ma-Ma isn’t as easy as it seems in this explosive adaptation of the hugely popular comic series.

I blind-bought the Blu-ray of this one recently since I heard it's actually underrated and succeeds even the first film, Judge Dredd (1995) with Stallone. Prior to seeing this, I knew the Dredd comics had a lot of bloody and gory content, and this one provided some of that. It's a more dark gritty reboot, definitely different from the '95 film, and the soundtrack is more electronic as opposed to orchestral. There are some nice visuals and cinematics; a bit on the saturated look. They use a lot of that Frank Miller 300-style slow motion effect, still effectively cool considering it seems low-budget CGI like you'd see from an indie action short film such as Kung Fury (2015) or Manborg (2011). The protagonist Ma-Ma is played by Lena Headey whom I recognize from the Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, which I've been catching up on lately. I realized she's been in Game of Thrones, The Purge, and the 300 sequel as well. Olivia Thirlby, who plays a rookie Judge Anderson, is a cutie. She kinda reminded me of Samus Aran. See it in 3D if you can.

Amusing over stylized ultraviolence with the expected dialog, some of the costuming (Domhnall) was really good.

Judge Dredd: Rookie, you're ready?
Anderson: Yeah.
Judge Dredd: You don't look ready.

Judge Dredd: I was wondering when you'd remember you forgot your helmet.
Anderson: Sir, a helmet can interfere with my psychic abilities.
Judge Dredd: Think a bullet in the head might interfere with them more.

Judge Dredd: You ready?
Anderson: Yeah.
Judge Dredd: You look ready.
