Duel 1971

Despite its TV origins and simple plot structure, Duel works extremely well as a piece of cinema and showcases Spielberg’s early ability to craft a series of brilliantly sustained tense action sequences despite the minimal budget he had. The lack of time and money also shows Spielberg at his most creative - peppering the film with some clever tracking shots around the vehicles whilst reusing footage from different angles to give the illusion of distance travelled and creating a sense of urgency and speed throughout from the way in which the vehicles were shot. Weaver’s performances is also excellent, from his initial uncertainty and panic to a finale that leaves him slightly unhinged and desperate and he is probably one of Spielberg’s most relatable everyman - his initial need to rationalise and avoid confrontation despite what is happening and his final manic reaction to the resolution mirroring how most people in the audience would probably react. A voiceover to elaborate on his thoughts at certain points in the film and some scenes to provide background on his character prove unnecessary and are the film's only false note.

Simple but effective. One of the first movie of Steven Spielberg and you can already discover his talent. The truck remind me a lot of The Wages of Fear, I don't know if he has taken his inspiration from this movie but i like it. A must see !

Finally saw this. I enjoyed the tension, but felt like the protagonist was the worst driver in history swerving all over the road once he hit 70mph lol and smashing into things throughout. A tense situation for sure, but he handled it horribly. His reactions to things seemed pretty over the top at times or nonsensical. All that said still a solid beginning for Spielberg. He was only ~25 when he made this. 6.3 for me, probably higher if I saw it upon release and it wasn't 50+ yrs old.

A classic. You have to see this. W/o question. BUT... let's be realistic, horrible acting and extreme overacting. Sometimes painful to watch. But still, impressive how you can make a movie with a semi, a car, and some extras....

Spielberg's first mainstream film as director, and wow!

This film picks up the suspense hat where Hitchcock left it. There is drama throughout, seen through the mind of the main character. All he wantscto do is get home to his wife.....

Duel is great. It's a bit slow, but it's a cool movie. Loved the cinematography and the setting. It's an underappreciated gem.

It’s an interesting film from a psychological perspective and it’s filmed well.

Fun little action piece from an unknown director, but it’s no A Deadly Encounter (2004)

From Steven Spielberg comes the gritty and intense road rage thriller Duel. Based on a Richard Matheson short story, a salesman finds himself being pursued down the highway by a tanker truck that’s out to kill him. Spielberg is especially adept in his directing and is able to give the truck a sense of foreboding and an air of danger. Also, the chase sequences are incredibly well-shot, capturing the terror and helplessness of the salesman. However, there really isn’t enough material for a full 90 min. film, and the chase does get repetitive after a while (as there’s only so many ways to shoot it). Yet despite its limitations, Duel delivers a visceral experience that puts the pedal to the metal.

Jaws but with a stalker oil tanker. The movie is well made practice for Spielberg before Jaws.

A slow descent into madness for a driver, completely unprepared for the revenge of the simple act of passing someone on the road.

The only reason this movie isn't a classic like Mad Max is because Spielberg went on to do better things. It would be a career highlight for another filmmaker. Is THAT good.

Impressive ratcheting up of the tension, especially the first 30 mins and the final 30 mins.

It's a 70s film so expect hammy acting and a slower pace than modern films.

Overall though, if this wasn't a Spielberg movie, it'd be remembered for its tension still.

7/10

Pretty good first movie. Simple plot and a low budget but Spielberg makes the most of it. He finds a way to create tension.
