Eight Men Out 1988

Eight Men Out avoids the sports drama clichés but it doesn't really make the impact it should with the interesting true story subject matter. The cast is fairly good with John Cusack standing out and getting the most attention but the movie feels all 29 years of its age. I'm sure baseball fans will enjoy it but if you aren't aware of the story I'd avoid this one.

Excellent writing. Beautiful cinematography. Gives the feel of its 1919 time period. Sports movie doesn't show much sports since the real story is behind the scenes. It's the story of three men, as I see it. "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, who loves the game but looks the other way for his team. Eddie Cicotte, who feels wronged by Comiskey for his shoddy pay for the players. Buck Weaver who complied by not speaking up. There was no right decision as everyone involved got the same punishment; it was just a sad day for baseball.

Ken Burns brought more life to the Black Sox scandal than this Hollywood attempt.

Performances: 5...Cusack best of the bunch, all over-acting
Misc.: 4
Influence: 5...doesn't even crack the top ten best baseball movoes
