A real chore in it's opening 80 minutes, Eli struggles to keep you engaged during its mediocre at best build up. For further insult to injury, Eli does so little with it's premise after it finally lifts the curtain you'll immediately wonder if you just wasted your time. A very good idea squandered by a nonsensical, incoherent intro/middle, and then an overly rushed reveal/wrap up. Background viewing worthy, but definitely don't dedicate all of your attention.
Knowing Netflix, this'll probably have a sequel in time for next Halloween
It's an ok horror movie, but sadly the horror was quite underwhelming. I got pretty confused by the twist and would love to actually have more information to solve this mystery myself first. The twist in my opinion was too rushed.
Eli is Very Meh at best.
Pretty messy movie that could have been good.
Some things are ridiculous though like the immunologist being a nun or the religious mom making a pact with the devil to have a child because apparently that’s a thing.
Overall I liked the concept but it wasn’t really well written in my opinion, there are a lot of clichés horror scenes that don’t really land. Seems like they tried to mix different genres together which makes it confusing and I have many questions still. Like, why did the kid think his parents made him believe he was sick when we saw his first « reaction » happened when he was alone ? How was Eli conceived ? Was it like an immaculate conception or did she meet the Devil (the fact that she said he lied to her implies that they met, but...)? How did she even think about praying to the Devil for a child ? I don’t understand how gene therapy just transformed into a full on exorcism session with holy water and shit ? What was the purpose of the bone drill during the first treatment ?? Is it a ghost movie or an exorcism movie or a claustrophobia movie or a conspiracy movie ??
didn’t expect the last bit, whoa. sick af for the ending thing. hopefully they’ll make more to expand on it. it did sorta seem like he had a crush on that girl, then she’s revealed as his sister? :joy: honestly tho i was wondering what was going on the whole time and p satisfied by the outcome.
Not scary but much better than expected. Really enjoyed the twist and how it was handled.
Okay. That turned out better than I expected. A lot of twists and turns at the last third of the movie. It's a 6.5/10 for me, cause the start was pretty slow and generic, and then THINGS happened that would make you think of THINHS but then you were wrong all along. oh well.. I think the idea and execution was novel to me (at least the last 30 mins of it)
I was honestly pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think much of it. I put it on to watch and figured it would be a really dumb jump scares the whole time, but I actually kind of enjoyed it. It has some good twists and turns. Much better than what I had anticipated.
Netflix is trying hard to get a sequel on this for sure. it feels like when you start watching a movie on tv, you fall asleep and when you wake up another one is playing already. it was a slow build up, and I honestly thought it would be a different ending with a good old mad scientist, but they had to go with the cliches involving cults and what not. a bit disappointing Ill constructed narrative.
Interesting story and new thinking! It’s not the best and it’s not the worst horror movie I’ve watched it was okay. I really liked the ending tho
Conceptually good and with a neat twist. Unfortunately, the script is patchy and so the film isn't as good as it could have been.
Solid supernatural flick with a disappointing ending because it forgets to be horror.
if it wasn't for the whole uhhh gene therapy, and if they gave hints from the beggining the movie would be so much better
i feel like i watched two movies and i only enjoeyed the second one
hail satan
What a twist in this medical thriller. ;)
Pacing was quite dull and the acting was so so, but the payoff at the end was well worth it.
Really enjoyed it. The acting is great, especially the kid. It never goes where I expected it to go but it worked. It's been on my to watch list for so long. I'm happy I finally watched it.
It was going great until the plot twist. Not that it is bad, but it shifts a lot and you go from suspense to feeling like you are safe. Not a total waste of time, but also not something you'd remember or recommend in a conversation.
The twist is weird and illogical and why did the parents keep making him sick? Munchausen by proxy, they thought they were Chris nolan
I enjoyed this and you have to stay for the neat end twist... it fooled me! I thought some of the ideas were really good and the climax finale was surprisingly very well done. It comes across a little odd but there's a reason for that... all the clues are there :-) 6.5 / 10
Bad movie. The start is good, but then it gets lost completely
OK plot twist, it's a shame that the performances were not as good as it could be.
An interesting setup that does not really deliver. It's mostly jump scares and pretty basic intro level horror stuff. However we never get over to the next thing as the reveal is totally different and could have been better used as the setup for another movie.
It's not really unexpected either, the emphasis when the father says he's always been faithful is pretty suggestive.
The final exorcism scene is good, specially the burning upside down cross shaped nuns.
TLDR: You could do worse for a Friday night.
I'd rate this as a just above average horror movie, and a good movie overall; it's totally predictable from pretty early on, when he meets Haley the first time she alludes to magic/misdirection; the mother's name being a direct reference to 'Rosemary's Baby' pretty much gave up the plot. From about halfway through it's just a waiting game to see how it'll all get tied together, and unfortunately the ending is what drags this down from a good movie to a just above average one—it quickly goes into Brightburn territory.
Totally unexpected twist which I would have never guessed! 6/10
Disjointed pile of trash. The writing is trash, the story nonsensical. MAYBE some acting is okay just stay away! last 10 mins is all you need
The history is vague and the development too slow. We miss a lot of relevant information in order to understand a bit more the plot just to not be surprised on the last 10 minutes.
It's a good end and a good concept but since Brightburn it is starting to create a new canon. Having Netflix on the back I totally agree that I will not be surprised if a second part comes out from this.
Spoiler:
If the ginger girl was also a child of the devil, how come they didn't capture her -despite the fact she always hung around that mansion- and try all those creepy exorcism stuff which apparently don't work and turn them into ghosts instead? Too many plot holes. Weak build-up.
Some good action, effects, cast and plot with a good unexpected shocking twist..
A mixture of things that do not add up at any time, the characters are not credible
What a weird movie.. There's just too much going on and none of the ideas are elaborated enough to make sense individually let alone jointly. I also kind of knew where this was going before the family entered the house because the clues are pretty obvious.. even more so, if you look at the poster, which I hadn't even seen before now..
Worst movie ever, really boring
Loved it what a twist at the end! I never would of thought! I hope they make 2nd part that’s if they need one!
A few creepy moments and a competent cast aside, this film is thoroughly underwhelming. Unless you're a particular fan of one of the actors, I'd definitely suggest finding something else to watch.
there needs to be a continuation to this.
Not as bad and boring as hill house, but still boring. At least it's a lot shorter.

It doesn't look like they built things up for the twist, so it looks like two different movies.
