The trick is not to compare it to the classic then you'll have a AWESOME TIME!!!
I love this movie. I'm not comparing it to the original because they're different movies. This stands on its own as a scary, bloody, awesome horror movie. Jane Levy is great. The gore! So good.
No where near as entertaining as the original
One of the best remakes in the horror genre, fantastic music(!), acting, FX and intense horror without cheap jump scares. No unneccesary padding, this movie goes straight to the point. Evil is being unleashed and it’s relentless.. Recommended!
Way too gory for my liking, I am not even squeamish but it made me feel a little bit queasy!
Suitably gnarly and gooey, with plenty of moments that made me wince, I appreciate the film not just aping the original, but it still lacks a bit of identity for me. It doesn’t have Evil Dead 2’s marriage of camp and horror or the original’s messy ambition. It’s a competent film from a good hired hand but doesn’t feel like his film. The gore is great, with moments that had me gasping in anticipation, pain, or both, but I wasn’t as scared as the film wanted me to be. It feels like it wants to be both suffocating tense horror and the over the top thrill ride that gets cheering in the theater, not quite nailing either. The ending is good fun though, and it’s all around a good time.
So. Much. Blood.
One of the best remakes if you ask me! Probably an unpopular opinion but this is better than the 1981 original. Now, there's the obvious elephant in the room that this is a very expensive remake to a very low budget original and that creates a conflict as you should praise the one that was done with less money and revolutionary for it's time. It's not original by any means but let's be real, the execution is much better. It takes elements from both The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II a lot but still manages to create something different and fresh, adding lots of new lore and doing something completely different in the second half.
Obviously money helped in every department: Gallons of blood, loads of gore, practical effects that look amazing, brutal body horror and the makeup for the Deadites have never looked so good. Some intense and thrilling sequences and the tone is much darker and less comedic than the original. The one-liners are really nasty, caught me by surprise how rude they were it's really believable that it's coming from a demon. The book looks so creepy and detailed, I want one (for display, of course). The brother sister bond became annoying at some point and it made the brother look like an absolute idiot but if I were to rewatch it knowing how it ends it probably doesn't have the same effect. The characters are it's biggest flaw, even more so compared to the original. Nice twist I didn't see coming and the third act is all kinds of wild and epic.
complete waste of time. crap
A brutally insane movie that you should enjoy if you like how fucked up Ash vs Evil is. I don't get how some people hate it, like Richard Roeper. Definitely is one of the better reboots.
Bruce Campbell is hilarious but without him you mostly just have a crazy movie without the goofiness of part two and 3. While it's about as violent and twisted as Ash vs Evil.
superb remake, a lot of little things that made us remember the original trilogy and yet not a copy from the original. but i didn't enjoyed the last 20 minutes ): they could have done a better ending.
After catching this movie yesterday, I discovered that Fede Alvarez decided to spend 10% of the budget on casting, 5% on writers, and 85% on fake blood.
Incoming cinematic orgasm!
Probably not a popular opinion, but I liked this movie much better than the original. I probably still should have rented the movies rather than bought them because tbh I doubt I will watch any of them again, but by far this was the better of the 3 I watched (Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, and now this Evil Dead)
Doesn’t have the same feel of the original series, some additions/changes that I didn’t care for such as the abomination. Plot and dialogue is generic. I did really enjoy the practical effects which were very well done and I can appreciate the fast pacing which made the runtime feel quick. All said and done, despite its flaws it was still an enjoyable watch.
UPDATE 09/07/2023 This one somehow found its way to the #9 spot on the list of The 20 Best Horror Movies Ever Made, According to Redditt as mentioned in some of my previous recent reviews. Like the #10 movie The ReAnimator on that same list, this is another one that I'm not going to bother sitting through again just for the sake of reviewing its rank on that list. Suffice it to say this is *NOT "the most terrifying film you will ever experience" . It had plenty of bloodshed and gory moments in it but by and large, it was far from "terrifying". I'll stop short of saying this film "doesn't deserve a spot on that list" (horror, like any other art form is subjective, after all) because this wasn't a "bad" movie and there were scenes in it that were truly horror-inciting. That being said, my previous review should suffice as my thoughts about where this particular movie actually stands in my own ranking. Peace.
Mixed emotions about this one. The original The Evil Dead movie was so campy (by today's standards) that it came across more as a horror/comedy than a true horror movie. This one (and yes, as numerous people have pointed out, this feels more like a "continuation" or "reawakening" than a reboot of the original) comes across much more ominous and evil. Granted, some of the lines (you'll know which ones if you watch this) were way too reminiscent of The Exorcist and I felt like they could have done at least a little bit more with the interaction between the characters. It was basically "Hey good to see everyone again..." and we're into the butchering. Little confusing because you weren't real sure about all these mixed feelings going on, and why... Fast-forward into the "evil" part of this movie and it had some really great gore in it; normally I can sit here and enjoy a meal while watching pretty much anything but this one made me squirm a little bit at some points. Although there was plenty of violence, it didn't have the silly, campy "How many buckets of red Koolaid and ketchup can we throw at the camera?" feel that the original did. This one actually felt like a very violent, malevolent spirit was at work and was taking great delight in inflicting torment on its awakeners. With that said, however, the main point where Evil Dead basically lost me was in (1) the ending. I felt like it was (in this case, quite literally) "overkill". Up to the final few minutes, the story felt like it had been building to a momentous ending, and then it just all seemed to implode, for me. The final...maybe 20 minutes?...felt so completely rushed and there was just so much going on that it became very difficult for me to keep up with everything. (As a side note, and maybe it was just me, but man that basement scene with the flashlight was MAJOR annoying! Someone should have figured out how to angle that spotlight differently than pointing it directly into the camera. I had to look away from the screen several times because that light was so annoying.) And without giving up any spoilers, let me just say that it was the conclusion that ruined it for me. I just lost all connection because (1) it was so "busy" and difficult to keep up with all that was going on and (2) it just reached a point where, even with my brain detached, it became so "eye-rollable" that I lost interest in it. Here's a clue; I don't care how panicked you are, or how many demonic entities are trying to kill you, you can't rip your hand off at the wrist just by tugging real hard. Even if that were humanly possible, the sheer pain level alone would cause you to pass out...not pick up a chainsaw one-handed and fend off this thing that's coming for you. Okay, so I gave away one spoiler; don't click on it if you don't want to know. But that's where the "disconnect" was complete for me. That was just too ridiculous. And even after that, it was still so confusing that I couldn't follow what little happened after that. I give this one a "6" simply because it was "scary" and not cheesy, but I couldn't give it a "7" (GOOD) because the closing moments just felt so rushed and crowded and detracted sorely from what, up to that point, had been what I thought was a pretty good movie. If you like creepy, demon-possession-type stories, or you're a fan of real violent scenes, you'll probably like this one. Not sorry I watched it, but probably wouldn't waste time watching it more than once.
I like this movie, was very crepy, was slasher, very good movie
ok but THAT fanservice was everything to me!
Such a great atmosphere so much gore and a brilliant horror movie from a new special talent. For me is such a same to compare this with the original because you are going to hate a very good horror movie which is breathtaking. As a horror fan i am dissapointed from most horror movies nowdays but this one got me! 7.8/10
Second time watched, and still a good reboot, but I do still like the oldies :P
Would have been a better movie if it wasn't attached to Evil Dead. The tone of the movie was really different from the original and I did not find the new kids likeable. Both Raimi and Campbell were producers so I guess this was fine by them. Good for the gore :9.

EVIL DEAD
EXTENDED CUT/ UNRATED
BALLS TO THE WALLS HORROR
AT IT'S FINEST,
THERE'S "R" RATED
THEN THERE'S "R"
THEN THERE'S
SAM,ROB AND BRUCE'S "R"
(THIS MOVIES R)
This version is super frickin awesome amazing fantastic, now this is what I'm talking about.
Wow..just...wow..
This movie kicks ass from the very start right to the phenomenal end.
This is how you do horror, and every other modern day horror movies need/must take their props from this one,. This is how you do it right.
This has definitely saved the franchise from that shocking, appalling Army of Darkness
(which should have never been made).
To be fair only
The Evil Dead uncut/unrated and
This 2013
Evil Dead Extended cut unrated version
horror Masterpiece
are the only 2 that need to be noteded as being the
Evil Dead franchise, and that would put this franchise up there as being one of the best and strongest horror franchise ever made,
But instead we get what we got..nuff said.
X FINAL THOUGHT:
2013 ED* is one of the best retellings I have ever seen and I would have definitely liked to have seen a trilogy with Mia now in the Lead role kicking more ass because she is phenomenal and carried this movie to even greater heights, speaking of Mia somebody give this girl an Oscar because her acting is off the charts, and what she brought to this already awesome movie with her acting range was absolutely outstanding
(I stand up and begin to clap my hands slowly).
This movie is the gift that keeps on giving, I absolutely love my blood and gore and heads coming off, guts exploding kinda thing and thank god this movie gave me that and so much more
(There is a God).
Loved all the alternate endings and it was great seeing Bruce/Ash in them passing the torch on to our Mia.
We are definitely in safe HAND with Mia
"She's Got This"
Hella Yeah.
Haven't seen the original but after watching this, it's a must. Great film.
I like this remake.
Loved the original one, loved the first remake, but this one has slightly drifted from the original plot. Good scenes, good effects. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell as producers have done fine but prefer them as director and actor.
Saw this last night here in the UK. I am soooo peed!!! Its was beyond CRAP!!. I't was just an extremely poor, regular horror flick with absolute no story to keep you gripped. My best friend stopped me from walking out towards the end of the movie :(
Yes, I was curious, being a Evil Dead fan, but what persuaded me to watch this was IMDB.
I made the mistake of trusting IMDB's ratings so early when a movie is released (that said 7.2 / 15,000 views) and trusted that all the ratings are going to be genuine.
Anyway, watched it, and yes, I cried. No way on in this universe anyone would score this above 4. I can not believe that for a second. I went back to IMDB site, wondering why the hell people recommended this crap, and found all the recent reviews were all in-between 1/10 and 3/10. All the old (most probably fake reviews) were rated at around 7/10 to 10/10.
Obviously, the marketing team of this movie, faked reviews on IMDB before the real people got a glance at how bad this movie was..
Being an Evil Dead fan, I really was curious but I wouldn't have watched it, if I knew it was this bad. You can't beat an original horror flick and I don't know what possessed me (get it;) to think its going to be alright... Thanks IMDB :(
Conclusion: Be prepared to be peed. And the only horror your going to experience, is how I've tried my best to convince you, NOT to see this, yet your curiosity took the better of you and forced you to burn a few hours of your precious life. Don't say I didn't warn you!!
Waiting and watering
I appreciate the director's trying something different, but he subtracts most of what makes the series work in the first place. The higher production values and serious tone draw attention to the fact that the movie's stupid and kitschy. Without the campy lens or Bruce Campbell it kinda becomes just another basic teen horror film, one with really bad acting, dialogue and characters. There's still some nice, atmospheric directing during the scenes in the forest, but most of this isn't very interesting or memorable. By comparison, the third act is a lot more fun because it pushes the film to a more gory, over the top place. It's unapologetically trashy, which I appreciate but it doesn't support much of the tone preceding it. I honestly think you'll get the most out of this experience by watching the final 20 minutes and pretending it's a short film.
4/10
Sam Raimi’s cult horror classic Evil Dead is modernized in this remade that excesses in gore and violence. After suffering a drug overdose Mia invites her friends to her family’s cabin to help her detox, but things go horribly wrong when they accidentally release an ancient evil. The writing is fairly good and does an impressive job at creating an original story that also pays homage to the Raimi film. However, the blood and gore are overdone, to the point that it distracts from the story and takes the audience out of the film. Though Evil Dead is competently made, it doesn’t offer any new perspective on the material or break any new ground in the horror genre.
10/10
All Gold
Evil Dead 2013
is one of my favourite
Horror movies ever
and one of the best
Remakes I've ever
had the pleasure to
watch, because let's
be honest Remakes
do not have the best
track record, most just
piss all over the source
martial and bury the franchise.
but not this one if anything
it's saved the beloved franchise
and this is actually better than everyone of the
Installments after
The Evil Dead 1981.
Mia is an Outstanding
actress and her
performance is
off the charts,
the possessions we're
Sensational and the
blood and gore was
frickin awesome.
everything about this
movie is slick and
modern and actually
makes sense in a real
world environment,
this movie is so well
thought out and put
together to make it a
very very compelling
and exciting movie.
This movie is definitely
by far one of the best
damn HORROR movies
of the modern era and
shows up all others
in what piss-poor
weak pathetic
attempts they are.

"GROOVY"
There's a generic feel for most of the movie. It reminded me of mid 2000s horror. The finale is great, though.
Jane Levy is absolutely the best part of this mid film - she's amazing.
Great job on portraying a demonic tone though; I actually blessed myself with the sign of the cross a couple times because the demons on screen felt so real. Scary.
Eric is a school teacher and doesn't seem to be able to read or even have an inside voice. I was expecting him to have ulterior motives and already know the book was there in order to explain why he was so eager to be a massive dumbass; it felt like a very unnatural way to start the chaos. It sucks that the drug withdrawals went nowhere, would've been cool to see a demon actually struggle in a human body with its own "demons" so that was some wasted potential. There's no story here, I guess it's about family or something...
An exemplary example of how to legasequel correctly, should be satisfying to fans of the original films as well as a total newbie. Brutally disturbing and gory, not for the faint of heart.
Evil Dead (2013) dials up the horror to 11. If you're a fan of the original, there is a lot to like here. It was just a couple of bad writing decisions away from being truly great.
A film definitely for connoisseurs of the genre. ;)
now this is a movie! how to embrace the lore of sam raimi evils dead é make something really good!
I remember seeing this for the first time in theaters and immediately needing to see it again. It’s not the greatest plot, but the pure evilness of the content, and the graphic images are something of nightmares. It’s a must see for horror movie fans because this content will stick with you (for better and worse).
Rating: 5/5 (:star:) - 10/10 - Must See
Perhaps sacrilege, but I found this more enjoyable than the original. Satire and unintentional comedy are thankfully removed from this reimagining, and it’s all the better for it. Buckets of blood, chilling set pieces, jump scares galore; what more could be asked for when it comes to a horror movie? The final chainsaw is one of the most metal endings to a horror movie ever. Thoroughly enjoyed, great watch.
everytime I watch this I like it more and more. watched the new unrated 4K tonight, what a picture! Top notch gore and scares.
It’s got good effects and acting, but just not scary or entertaining. I tried not to compare it to the originals but it doesn’t have the heart nor is it fun.
Such a well done remake. Great homage to the original while still doing it’s own thing. It's a lot of fun, very brutal in a lot of parts and it never let me breathe. It feels fresh because it doesn't try to emulate the 80s feel and goes with darker and more serious approach instead. Yes the campiness and slapstick comedy are gone but that doesn't make this a less enjoyable film. It still maintains the relentlessness and top notch gore that I love from the original. I forgot the last time I flinched so much while watching anything. It features some of the best final girl moments. The cinematography, editing, practical effects and make-ups are all exceptional.
This was an absolute gore fest.. More a continuation than a remake.
"'Evil Dead' accomplishes what it sets out to do: Scare viewers easily and uphold a tradition of horror.
This film is much better than the original, soundtrack, direction, impeccable editing, the continuous tension of the film is wonderful and adds a lot to the simple script, much better than that classic comedy.
So much gore. So many cheesy lines. It's all great, well at least once all the supernatural shit starts.
You know this is going to be one of those movies. Five teens in a very shady cottage in the woods, it screams misery. I heard good things about this movie but it was just too much for me. I don't like the demon genre, my bad for watching this but the movie is just overall too much. It goes a step too far, especially that ending. Jane Levy is a brilliant actress though!
"The most terrifying film you will ever experience.".....seriously??? the only reason i would've died was from laughter...terrifying pfff ...original was way better and that was a comedy too in my eyes
Bom. Nda demais. Alguns sustos, mas também, algumas decepções. Pensei que seria um final diferente.
Are you fucking kidding me? Awful remake
This movie is so bad.
yes, i was scared... 25years ago by the original, now i was bored to death. saying to my self: "oh its like in the other version, only worst"
watching this movie is wasting time, money and scary childhood "souvenirs".
Horrible.Sad what the new generation horror remakes are becoming.
I am not a big fan of terror but I wanted to see this anyway. I know this is a remake and I didn't saw the original but for me this didn't bring nothing new it was more of the same.
The CGI was bad and there were a lot of fake blood that actually looked like fake blood more like tomato soup. The acting wasn't very good also.
Many people say great things about the original, maybe I should check it some day and I hope it's better than this.
Ehh... it was OK, but not really scary though.
If you ever saw the original back in the days, you get a kick out of this. Every key scene is in there. I've enjoyed it a lot.
Definitely not the most terrifying movie I have experienced.
I'm so disappointed with bloody-disgusting and the 4 skulls they gave to this film.
Reviews, never believe them. And even if you are reading this before watching the movie, go ahead and watch it, take your own conclusions.
This is a crappy horror flick. Nothing original. How many times can teens in a cabin get slaughtered?
I found it real fun to watch with friends in the cinema! Got a few good jumps outa me ;-).
just a regular modern movie horror miles away from the original.
So much fun! LOVED IT!!

This movie is not meant to be a remake of the first, rather a reawakening of an old and classic evil. Watch this movie with an open mind and you will love it. Watch it and compare it to the original? You will hate it, because they are not the same movies.
