What an awkward movie, but it kept me hooked.
It’s the Christmas movie Krampus would be proud of. A real turkey! Not even John Cleese can raise a smile in this movie equivalent of a Brussel sprout.

Too much overly annoying, unnecessary drama that made me feel disappointed early on as almost everything could have been easily avoided. It could have been much better, at first, I quite enjoyed the characters being almost caricature-like, with the exception of Vicky, who was just despicable. One of the biggest dramas in the plot was also a nuisance: it's hard to believe that Peter, whose wife is a very precise, organizing maniac, couldn't even give credit to his wife's intelligence - like if that kind of person had an affair, she would leave a pregnancy test lying around in their own bathroom... and any case, communication perhaps, instead of more unnecessary drama and a slap in the face hommage á dad? All in all, much ado for nothing, felt uncomfortable during most of the movie, and that outweighs any positive in it.

From Netflix comes the British holiday comedy Father Christmas is Back. The Christmas family (yes, their family name is actually “Christmas”) is in for a surprise this Christmas when their estranged father, who walked out on the family 27-years ago, returns with his new girlfriend. Featuring Kelsey Grammer, Elizabeth Hurley, April Bowlby, and John Cleese, the cast is pretty decent; though the performances are rather middling. And the writing is weak, with underdeveloped characters and the thinnest of plots. Still, some of the comedy works and there are a few touching moments. Father Christmas is Back is a superficial and uninspired film that just seems to be going through the motions.
Ooft - this is bad. For the first 30 minutes, all of the characters are unlikable, and that continues mainly for the 3 core sisters (because the thesis writing lesbian 4th sister is barely around to add anything). The film swings hard in act 2 to course correct the sisters into likable characters - completely contradicting their previous characteristics.
The direction is really poor, from literally the actor title cards. Too many close-ups on Nathalie Cox's face at weird moments. There's no gel here. Act 3 isn't too bad and some of the characters redeem themselves by then, but it's too little, too late.
Poor Cleese who convinced him to do it? Wooden acting, forced jokes and a weak family drama... What a failure.

A movie with John Cleese and Elizabeth Hurley should at least make me smile: it's bad and the jokes are very weird and outdated.
