Fracture 2007

Day 3 of Ryan Gosling Filmography Binge

Fracture is yet another cat and mouse psychological thriller starring Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling. While the first act delivers us with a nicely executed set of sequences filled with mystery and intrigue, it doesn't fulfil the potential it could've been. The first act was great but the second act felt more sluggish although the third act pays off better with a more tense and satisfying ending, the plot twist was also easily predictable for viewers who are rather polished in the genre. The characters portrayed masterfully by Hopkins and Gosling are great however they seem slightly under-developed and lack the depth required from such a movie. The obvious strengths of this movie apart from the lead performances are the court room drama and the psychological battle between the 2 leads.

In conclusion Fracture does a good job in grabbing the viewer initially, but it does not live up to the expected expectations of the other counterparts in the genre.

Fracture- 6.8/10
Ryan Gosling- 7.7/10

Ted: "My dick has evidence."
Judge: "Excuse me?"
Ted: "My dick... my private investigator. I call him Dick."

It borrows a lot from Silence of the Lambs; a convicted killer taken into custody and an investigator on the outside trying to solve a puzzle.

Anthony Hopkins does his usual character, the highly intelligent psychotic mysterious tactician with a polite accent. He had a few solid comedic moments that I really enjoyed and he looked like he was having a blast in court. Ryan Gosling + Rosamund Pike = HOT duo. Pike really shined whenever she was on-screen, wanted more. Gosling was solid in the main role, I just wish we knew a little bit more about his character.

I was invested in the first half the mystery had me intrigued but it lost some heat after that and became a bit of a drag. Too much focus on the murder weapon perhaps. But thankfully it picked back up in the last 30 minutes. I expected more from the twist but it does the job I guess, the same can be said for the movie as a whole; nothing too special but it does the job.

This is my kind of film. Suspense throughout, mystery till the very end... I could write a long review about the film but I realise it wouldn't be that different to what others have already said about it, so my only criticism goes to Anthony Hopkins.

I enjoy watching Anthony Hopkins. I really do. He is a brilliant actor and deserves all the credit he gets. However, his acting seems rather repetitive. He is always assigned to play the role of a man who is highly intelligent, mysterious, always a man of wisdom. Yes, this makes him an interesting character to watch, but we have seen it so many times. The funny thing though this never gets boring. So, I guess, hats off to him for his ability to make us watch the same character over and over again.

Would I watch this film again? Well, I guess so, only if it was on the telly and there is nothing else to watch it. Would I make my friends watch it? Possibly.

After watching Half Nelson and Blue Valentine, I approached Fracture with some trepidation. I shouldn't have. This too was... just, wow. It made me feel connected to it, it made me tense when it was tense. Definitely worth watching, I'd say it beats The Ides of March on intellectual thriller basis (if the two can be compared)

As soon as I saw the trailer I remembered Primal Fear, it kinda borrows from that heavily with a different plot line & story, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this movie, as always you expect great performance from Anthony Hopkins but Ryan Gosling was a really nice surprise and a breath of fresh air that multiplied the quality of this movie, I'd say it's one of those hidden gems that many will pass on which they shouldn't.

What a unique movie! At different times the movie feels like both a high-quality thriller and a breezy mystery. While Anthony Hopkins is absolutely perfect as the pseudo-villain (although to be honest he could do this role in his sleep) I really think that Gosling's role is the more interesting one as he transforms from an over-confident young lawyer into what he was meant to be. The movie also stands out because the mystery (and the conclusion) is accessible to the viewer if they are paying attention. I hate when there is a mystery and you spend a lot of time working on it only to have the resolution be something that was not part of the story and thus not accessible to the viewer.

How satisfying is it, to see the good guy getting bettered in every way by the mastermind, just to have the table turned around in the last 3 minute?

This really reminds me of an episode of Columbo, right from the start showing the crime, the twist at the end. Worth watching.

I love movies, where you get the big picture right at the beginning, but explain the details later on. The way Anthony plans his actions and you only get to know the details later on is only on of the things I love about this movie.
Great performance from Anthony Hopkins, and of course Ryan Gosling.
