Futurama’s second full-length feature, The Beast with a Billion Backs, is a near catastrophe. When Fry gets a new girlfriend he has trouble adjusting to her polyamorous lifestyle; meanwhile, the professor investigates a tear in the universe and Bender seeks out a secret robot society. The story isn’t cohesive and feels completely episodic, with several shifting plotlines that are only loosely connected. And the few continuing story developments there are insult the fans; such as scuttling the Fry & Leela and Kif & Amy relationships. But as usual, the one plotline that works is Bender’s. Yet despite the film’s chaos, there are moments where the Futurama comedy stylings come through and deliver the funny. Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs is a disappointing and embarrassing outing for the franchise and makes one wonder if it was better off cancelled.

Small step backwards from Bender’s Big Score, but overall it’s still solid. Fans of the show will enjoy this the same as anything.
